some character sketches I drew up and scaled at work today.

Fairly happy with the sizes shown here with dassem and gruntle profiles at roughly 1.8.
the faces are as follows from right to left:

psychotic Gruntle, Mappo Trell, Karsa (saying something deep), Dassem looking
murderous and Icarium being a little malevolent.

I apologize for the mess though. my tablet pen broke so no more digital art for
me but I did try use photoshop to fix some of the lines on the faces of the characters.
and make the scan more legible

Very nice, I like Karsa and Mappo the most of the portraits and also like the size comparison very much

As to Dassem.. I think the face and expression are good But he is described as being dark skinned [half-Dal Honese and half-Talian, is I remember correctly] and having long dark kinked hair, which he binds back.

Haven't made my mind up about Icarium yet. The tusks seem not pronounced enough.. But I've got a very fixed image of Icarium, so in this case probably nothing will please me

I also have always visualised Dassem as darker with a ponytail, Mappo and Karsa in particular are good and I think you absolutley nailed Icarium.Looks like he's just remembered something.

I think Gruntle is supposed to be a bit older and haggard looking and (running away now...) less Thundercattish.

What do I know,your talent totally eclipses any parkinsonian scrawl I would attempt, a full length Icarium would be nice though ?

Ok, first of all nice sketches.

I especially like Mappo since that's pretty much how I pictured him as well. Dassem has got a very nice brooding expression and I really have no clue what his hair is supposed to be like, but I like the motifs on the sid eof his head.

I have to agree with masan's saddle about Gruntle. He is a bit too Thundercattish. Also, I have been having really hard time finding out just how tall Mappo is supposed to be. He is mostly described as short and wide, which is why I always thought he was shorter than Icarium. On the other hand he is also described to be big, EVEN for a trell, which would suggest they are naturally large people. Tricky thing that.

I think Karsa is taller than both Icarium and Mappo. Maybe if you made Mappo slightly shorter than Icarium, and about as wide as Karsa...

Glad You all atleast agree on Mappo and Karsa, the others I must admit I was a bit iffish about as well...

@Puck:I forgot dassem was half talian, couldn't explain to myself why dassem/traveller had curly hair on drift avalii if he was dal honese which I think is almost east african feature wise. as a result I gave him a blade buzz cut to make him have a more military feel. I'm thinking he might end up looking middle eastern or something? I really apreciate help on this coz I fail each time I draw him feature wise.

@masans Saddle: Awesome name lol I agree with you and nether, I thundercatted gruntle ruthlessly and apologize forthwith. Truth be told I have this image of gruntle becoming more vitalized in battle and a bit insane thus I gave him an eccentric look. I can revise him when I draft second version on monday, thanks for the POV.

@Nether : the thing is when Mappo Icarium and Karsa met the description hinted at karsa being similar in height to Icarium, but I thought Mappo was larger mass wise than him. I think If I make karsa mappo sized and mappo karsa sized Icarium would seem too...stretched? Again hunting for description comparisons is a pain

I love Mappo, and of course Karsa.

Dassem, though while I didn't quite picture him with his hair so short, looks fucking COOL. You totally caught the whole 'badass' factor in that picture. I like Icarium, but there seems to be too much of a human cast to his face. Still very awesome.

I really like his face. It's just that I'm a discription junkie, so no worries Want me to dig up some quotes describing how Dassem looks? I think I can remember where to find some.

And concerning Mappo.. I remember him being shorter than Icarium, who is said to be very tall [for human measures], but wider, and as far as I remember Icarium and Karsa are about the same height. Which is very likely; if you have read RG, there are hints that

Icariums mother was TTT, so he's got Toblakai blood.

Icarium would be as tall, but not as wide as Karsa, who is both, tall and massive, while Mappo might be as wide but not as tall as Karsa. I think Trell are taller than humans, but not as tall as Toblakai. At least this is how I piece the info we get together.

SOMEWHAT FIXED! Lol I think this is right but people can show me the light anytime they so wish lol.

I made icarium uber tall and matched karsa to him, also added a little to mappos height coz turns out he a big boy too lol

As for the rest I would like to hear peoples opinions on the height of assail, the Tiste people and the kchain.

maybe throw the barghast and seguleh in as human scales too...

actually I agree with that, but cant reconcile mappo if he is described "towering" over humans at a head and a half yet built like a house
(not literal I hope). If i make iccy and karsa any shorter they almost force mappo to human height...

Okay, I changed the scale a bit. That's just how I'd do the height differences, so I'm not saying they're absolutely right..



This way the humans still look small compared to Karsa and Icarium, but not too tiny, I think.

As for Tiste, all I know is that Rake is about 7ft tall.

in tth karsa is described to be a half time higher than a human (by the captain)... so i recon its about right

I think it says in either DG or HoC that he is 8ft tall, which is almost double the height of a regular human.

I have a great reference picture for a Karsa/Samar DEv painting, which is of me (5ft4'') standing next to a professor at MTU who's like 6ft7''. The difference in height is ridiculous actually. So, although 8ft doesn't sound like much, it really is. It's HUGE.
