I decided to give this show a try. It looks good. It's BBC so there is the slightest possibility it actually has some historical content. First episode was interesting.

Any resemblance to 15C is purely coincidental unless they were early adopters of 19C bridles and other tack.

I'll give any historical drama a chance...even one written by Phillipa Gregory.

I've not watched, but I'll probably give one ep a chance.

Okay, watched ep 1. It was a tad slow to get going...probably about ten minutes or so but it picks up rather quickly once you know what's going on.

Quite entertaining. War of the Roses era politicking, a pretty solid budget, and some solid acting by the leads.

Good stuff. I'm defo on board for more.

:p So true!

I watched 30 mins of the first ep and turned it off. I hear ep 2 was better, though.

Ep 2 was really solid. Things jumped forward a bit in time to move events historically forward to the betrayal of Edward by Earl of Warwick. Things started popping in the final 20 minutes.

If the 3rd ep is like this, I'll be in for the whole series.

Does it really get better with the 2nd episode? Because the first episode was a yawnfest. Not a good way to kick things off if you ask me.

I've gotta catch up, but yeah by ep 3 or 4 I was really getting into the politicking.

My wife and I have seen the first 2 episodes so far. We are both into the medieval period and castles, etc, so we'll give most any historical drama from that period a shot. We like it so far but cannot keep up with who's who more often than we'd like. Is Margaret Beufort the former queen (of the former King Henry) or not? If so, and Henry isn't dead, how is she re-married? I thought "divorce" was virtually impossible pre Henry the 8th or thereabouts? And btw, is Margaret's son Henry Tudor that Henry?? I admit I'm not strong on knowledge of the actual War of the Roses, but my wife thought she was, somewhat, lol. I also have a couple minor complaints about ep 2, although 1 of them is just me thanks to my lifelong obsession with birds of prey. The scene where they're having a falconry "competition" of sorts, there is only 1 falcon! These people are royalty and falcons have always been the pinnacle of falconry! To my understanding, royals would not have stooped to use anything but. And I'm not even sure Harris hawks are in Britain or Europe; they're a North American hawk. But as I said, I may be the only one nitpicking all that. The other issue is, they announce 3 yrs passed at one point and everyone but young Henry Tudor was aged as best they could or replaced with an older child actor? Henry's the exact same kid! Of course, none of this has turned us off enough to stop watching for the time being...

Yeah, a bit of a grounding in the War Of The Roses is good to help, but you don't need it. You'll pick things up if you hang in there.

- Lady Margaret Beaufort was the wife of Edmund Tudor, and mother of Henry VII...and is actually Grandmother to Henry VIII. She was not married to the previous king, but is merely of that house through marriage (Edmund was the brother of King Henry VI), and thus knows that technically her son had a rightful claim to the throne before Edward seized power. The previous king (Henry VI)'s wife is Margaret of Anjou (Veerle Batens).

- Thus Lady Margaret Beaufort (the Red Queen, as she was deemed to Elizabeth's White), whose first marriage was annulled, allowing her marriage to Edmund, the Lancastrian king's brother, and father to Henry VII.

As to the kid not aging, yeah that was noted by us as well.

Anyways, hope that info helps. Basically there were a lot of marriages, and during the wars there was enough death amongst the nobles that multiple marriages was status quo....which REALLY muddies the waters. Just keep your eye on Edward, Elizabeth, Margaret, and young Henry (and Warwick of course), and you should do just fine. And remember that at some point, the Lancaster's win.

Henry VII didn't have a rightful claim on the throne though Edmund, as though he was Henry VI's brother it was on his mothers side not the fathers. Henry VII's claim comes through Margaret Beaufort herself, who was granddaughter or great granddaughter of King John I believe. Most of the claimants to the throne were rather dubious around that period, about a dozen people had claims through various tenuous lines of descent. It all gets confusing with all the different edwards and henrys, but henry VII was just the man who ended up on top, not from any particular strength of his claim.

Mrs. QT is away all next week on a road trip with her sister, so I'll have plenty of time to catch up.

Just finished ep 5, and I think the show is really firing on most pistons now. By this point you can have pretty much everyone down as to cast list and know what's going on and why.

Spoiler

A great show actually. Very enjoyable. It's just a shame that it was always planned as a one-off series. So there is nothing more past Ep10.

Huh, in the news yesterday: (I had a small feeling they'd do this since it's Gregory's most recently released book and is on the bestseller list currently)

But they are doing another series based on THE WHITE PRINCESS.

http://www.telegraph...a-comeback.html

If it's as entertaining as the first series, I'm in.
