Latest ep was pretty great. Have to give the show credit for making a 'story' ep - essentially an ep to move various characters from A to B without much else happening (except, y'know, killing) of significance - be awesome.

But most of all, can we take a moment to appreciate the glorious awesome i WANT WANT WANT THAT SUIT three-piece ensemble Hannibal was wearing to the first trial hearing.
OH MY FUCKING FUCK that red check grey with the silder/red tie.... I WANT THAT.


...and also the copycat killer ploy was kind of neat too...

This show just continues to be epic in every way, absolutely loved the latest ep!

That scene, you will know the one I mean, the one that you force yourself to watch, screwed up eyes and all, ugh! Tap, tap, tap!

Reminds me of my experience with the kerb scene in American History X, you know what's coming but you force yourself to watch it!

Even though I understand it's for the story and moving thing along, I'm actually pretty peeved about

Hannibal killing Bev Katz (or at least that seems 99% probable). She was awesome WoC character on the show who wasn't defined by her race (and no jokes were made about it) and who was super intelligent and just awesome to have around as part of the cast... I wish they hadn't off'ed her so soon at least! It feels too soon. Oh well, I still love the show and all, but I was a bit disappointed by this nonetheless.

Reading the AV Club walkthroughs (with Fuller) (be warned, that particular one, the first two answers contain spoilers for the beginning of the next episode as well,

she was actually meant to die in season 1, and Fuller kept her around longer precisely because she's so awesome.
It totally makes sense for the character though, the way she was built up from the start, that she's the one most ready to believe Will and who starts to snoop.

Got to say though, the most horrifying part of a very intense episode was

Really good episode though. And going through those episode discussions, it seems Fuller is really really excited about episode 5, in which case so am I. Looking forward to it.

Another excellent ep.The development was expected, although I thought it would be another character first. Should propel Will fwd nicely tho.
The suicide scene was brilliant. Mads deserves an Emmy for the way he played that.

Love the fact that even with the flash forward at the start of the season, I just don't have a clue what's going to happen or how it's going to get to that point!

I know we keep saying it, but it's worth repeating. This is one awesome show. The twisting and turning has really kicked into gear now (after a certain death) and it will be interesting to see how they play out the season.

Do they have Will coming out of prison as the finale, or do they release him earlier and joining the hunt.(I don't consider this a spoiler since there are 2 movies and a few books which establish that Will Graham is the one who is responsible for Hannibal getting caught). Hopefully a renewal order will come in soon, so we know they'll get to play out events at the pace they had planned.

yet another brilliant ep, spoilered for the late diners among us...

Hannibal fucking outdid himself with Bev. It was warning, taunt, art, and cro-ref to the Chesapeake Ripper cases all at once. Sick and twisted and genius and the writers for this show deserve an Emmy and therapy, LOTS of therapy.


And then... and fucking then... Will strikes back... how? By using scheming reporter lady to draw in the OTHER serial killer copycat (Will recognized there was another one, Hannibal concealed it from Crawford and co IIRC)
AND THEN SICCING HIM ON HANNIBAL HOLY STABBYFUCK.


And it almost worked too which was all kinds of nuts because the show tends to portray Hannibal as infallible, but orderly-guy totally got the drop on him.


Plus we had Hannibal drawing Jack into the friend-zone, which adds a whole other dimension to Jack's fury in the premiere flashforward.


Really enjoyed seeing Gideon again. He handled his scenes very nicely, hinting at so much without giving away anything.


It's a bit nuts because if they're leading up to RED DRAGON, then three characters: Hannibal, Will, Crawford, possibly Dr Chilton, can't die, but anyone else is up for grabs and Bev was a reminder of this.


There's also a fully valid possibility that they'll disregard the books and go their own way with the show, which doesn't bother me much given how great it's been to date.

Just watched the first season.

I am torn.

On the one hand I love the cinematograpy of the show and the style of... everything! The lighting, the clothing, the setting, piles of human flesh. It's all very nice.

On the other hand it also seems a bit over the top.

I wouldn't call myself a great fan of the little franchise that has sprung up around Lechter but I think Silence of the Lambs was something special and I don't think the TV series catches it. The show feels more like a cartoon than the movies did. The silent horror of human madness drowns in the ridiculous murder scenes. Everything is so over the top. Instead of burrying one person alive, the guy buried 8 and grew mushrooms on them, instead of killing one person and displaying them he killed 15 people and made a freaking human totem pole, instead of stabbing somebody to death the guy (Actually Hannibal) impaled them on a couple dozen pointy objects. There is so much gore and violence in these images that they actually lose their impact. It's too much. It feels like watching a mix between Bones and CSI on steroids. Or should I say anti-psychotics.

I remember watching one of the episodes where somebody had been brutally murdered and everybody was standing around joking, in a nicely lit, way too TV series designed lab and thinking "wow we've come a long way since Silence of the Lambs". Silence of the Lambs takes the FBI and murder investigation very seriously. Things are done by the book, people are dead serious, the ugliness of how people die is at the center. There is none of this darkness in the TV show I feel. There is little of the psychological horror which is what Hannibal Lechter and the murderers that he understands are supposed to be about. The monsters in this show are just that, monsters, there is little of the actual human madness there. Maybe that is just a sign of the times. 30 years ago we were all a lot less desensitized to murder and dead bodies and now a days, what with CSI showing us human skulls bursting apart in slow motion, it's just become mundane.

I am also not a fan of the Xerox mental photo-cropping effect that they use to show Wills intuition/empathy super power. I am fine with him putting himself in their mindset but it just gets a bit too gimmicky. Generally, I dislike that it ends up being more of a case of Will being a fucking nutcase, than Will being brilliant at what he does. Will seems more like Rainman than an expert. That's artistic license and I get it but I feel it also diminishes Will as a specialist.

All of those grievances aside I think it's a really good show. It's not as clever as I would have liked, but for what it is, a nightmare version of Munk crossed with Bones, I think it is very good at what it does. All those special effects and strangeness mixed with the ridiculous murder scenarios make for some interesting episodes. That episode with the crazy girl under the bed was straight out of something Chris Carter could have thought up for the X-files or Millennium.

I also love everything about Hannibal, his clothes, his cooking, his mannerisms. It's all very flamboyant yest sophisticated and for those in the know, deeply unsettling.

Not sure about Mikkelsen though. As a Dane I feel I ought to applaud any Danish actor that makes it big but I think Mikkelsens accent some times muddies the dialogue. Some of the sharpness of Lechter is lost in the translation I feel.

Anyway, nice show for what it is. I am curious to see how the show progresses. I am assuming that Will we be in Jail for the time being and when ever there is a case they need help on, he gets to go look at the crime scene.

And his comment to Will 'I'll give Alana your best.'.... AAAAAAHHHHHHH.

Loved Crawford and Chilton coining the 'Hannibal the Cannibal' nickname.

And then, of course, we have Gideon. Or rather, Hannibal had Gideon. And so did Gideon. FUCK.

Also, is it wrong that i thought his clay cooked dish looked really really good, even tho i knew, the second i saw it , exactly what it was? is that bad?

This show is consistently awesome. Love the slow , sinister unwinding of the plot.

The cat and mouse game between Will and Hannibal is great too. I really hope this gets an early commitment to a third season so they can plan things out accordingly. I don't want this series spoiled by a rushed ending if the cancellation Bear comes a hunting.

As for last night's ep, "Even Steven" indeed!
