So, who and what are the Avowed? Iron Bars is clearly very tough, and Corlo stated that although he could be killed, it would certainly take some doing - a foe like the 5 Tarthenal Gods. I also know that Iron Bars has promised to find his Prince, is the what Avowed means? Or is it an aleigance with a god?

i imagine that there have been many topics on this, though im too lazy to search and link, so.
in my limited knowledge, the avowed have sworn a pledge to return Prince K'azz to where ever he wants to be returned to, and it was obviously some kind of big vow, that gives them strength etc.

For More information Read 'Knight of Nives'..
Yeh What ^ he said is pretty much it. Just a group of people around a few hundred I think that avowed to see their prince back to ruling their lands. The Vow seems to give them long life. Iron Bars was one of the tougher Avowed as well though.

The Avowed are part of a mercenary company call the Crimson Guard, but not all the Crimson Guard are Avowed... Iron Bars is one of the most powerful, but he mentions a couple of people who are more so than he. Skinner and Blues for starts...
We don't as yet know where they are from, nor why they have an argument with the Malazan Empire, but since K'azz didn't join in with the alliance on Genebackis, we must assume something must be happening in their home land...

They are characters of ICE if I'm not mistaken so we will probably have to wait for his next book to find out.

Didn't the Malazans kick the Prince out of his home country, and now the Avowed will remain in his service unitl they see him returned to his rightful place? 'Tis at least how I remember it.
And ohyeah! I am really looking forward to ICE's 'The Return of the Crimson Guard' (if that really is the final title). I just hope that it won't take years until a publisher decides to release it... *crosses fingers*

was reading a bit in GotM where Fingers talks to Crokus of Cowl...and says damn his snakeskin hide.. just thought it was rather strange, and it make me think of Envy with her skin

the crimson guard are a mercenary unit that is dedicated to returning prince K'azz to his throne the throne of Unta I believe, can't remember when this is said, but I am sure that I remember it from somewhere. The avowed swore an oath to return their princes throne and so face the malazans on four different continents from what I remember. The vow seems to give them long life and an increase in power.

Tiste.
I think he is right..
It might not be unta but im fairly certain it is one the cities on the Quon Tali/Falari Continent.
Remember if Iron bars is about 120 years old, then the Prince would be that old as well, as the avowed are avowed to get the prince back on his throne.

It's in HOC when Felisin thinks back on how Tavore was reenacting a battle between the Duke (I think) Davore and Untan forces form before or during the Malazen conquest. At the start of the final 'book' of HOC.

The crimson gaurd seeks to return K'azz to the d'avore land, which was initially taken from him by the untans, and then by emperor kelvanned and is technically part of the kingdom of unta.

What no one appears to be saying - so I'll say it - is that, on the face of it, Avowal (or however you refer to it) looks a good deal like the T'lan Imass Oath (Ritual of Tellan or whatever)
It doesn't appear to go as far - which is probably only a matter of the specific details of the Oath - seeing as we've not seen an Avowed dissolve into dust and reform [as yet] but the two would appear to have definite similarities.
Discuss.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. Bertrand Russell

According to Corlo in Tides to be Avowed "Means they swore to return their prince to his lands. He was driven out, you see by the cursed Emperor Kellanved." Tides paperback page 515

perhaps the duke of the family died in that battle...but i don't remeber that battle being against the forces of the emperor though
