Hmm. Any chance of clarification there?

He signed up for a game when drunk, kicked my ass as a RI (I was scum) , declared that we have destroyed true soul of mafia and do not care about it enough, that we do not play it the way it should be played. He left us after that , my heart still bleeds!

He played the Mean Girls game, so you can go check that out there, but it was more or less along the lines of "Dang kids just don't play Mafia like we used to. Back in my day, a symp actually symped like they were supposed to, and the killers had no remorse, and the townies were almost claustrophobic in their small room... <grump, grump, grump... storm off>"

100 is going to be an epic game
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

To be quite frank 100 is shaping up to be a game that Mal most definitely would not want to play in. Its all fair and well to say its going to be epic and all the rest. But too much anticipation generally ruins an event. Think of your best nights out, random or massively hyped messes? But that's not why he wouldn't enjoy it. Because its the "benchmark" game (I still declare that rubbish due to nonsensical numbering system) it will be chock full of spamming bullshit and nostalgic circle jerking, Mal likes to play the game, not fuck about. Imo, of course I could be doing him a great disservice in my take on what his take on "the most epic game ever" would be.
I'm going to go ahead and pitch my prediction that for all good intentions, 100 will be painfully disappointing, over egging the pudding, too many cooks spoiling the broth and various other analogies pissing in the soup.

now get off my fucking lawn.

Personally I'm hoping that it is a nostalgia-fest and a game taken very much with a pinch of salt, as it were. A celebration, more than the ultimate test of mafia skillz. So yes, if it is that, Mal would absolutely detest it. I actually missed the Mean Girls game, just reading over it now to see what the fuss was about. But when a player's very first comment is:

You know that person is just looking to find things to criticise off the bat. Yeah, I get it, it is mafia taken far more seriously than we do now, that it's-not-just-a-game mentality. And I'm going to pick words of intentional controversy here - it's a mentality that we as a mafia board have matured out of. We no longer need to take it 100% serious to have fun with it, and it's allowed a lot of interesting experimentation as a result.

I think that's a slightly flawed interpretation of why Mal didn't enjoy that game, it wasn't the rp that irritated him, its when players rping eclipsed actual game play. But its not a discussion for here.

But my badly-expressed opinion is that the two styles have so diverged that they're pretty much incomparable. It's no longer a matter of gameplay quality - they are simply two different games now. I'm not looking to defend one as opposed to the other, or even compare them - I'm trying to say that there's no point in doing so.

But as you say, not for here :D

And it's also interesting to note that RPing actually appears to be dying off now too...

Having now actually gone through the Mean Girls game, Mal's abrasive style is an entertaining read. I love that there's an investigatory question directed at someone in almost every one of his posts.

The first sentence of the main OP post for mafia 100 is

Welcome to The Centennial, a celebration of the 100 full games and uncountable minis that have been played in our beloved Malazan Empire.

so it will be much more like what Khell is saying - a fun romp in the guise of a game. Balancing a 25+ player game solely by taking things far out of context from other games is just not really possible. That's not to say that the game will be significantly unbalanced, or that there isn't any value to actually trying to play it and win it. But pushing so many roles and a handful of mechanics from other games, each with their own NA resolution orders and other nuances, is going to lead to each player knowing very little of the big picture, and therefore each player will probably need to either have fun rolling with the unexpected or else will get frustrated at the seeming chaotic-ness of it.

As for Mal, he'd probably prefer mafia 99, which is a return to the precise fundamentals that he seemed to prefer. But I don't think we need to worry about bugging him, if he wants to play he knows where we are.

Mal was never happy about how mafia was played here...

Anyway, thinking about it, I'm more interested in a vanilla game, so strike me from 100 and sign me up for 99!

this is an interesting post for me.
I always view meat and potatoes as town versus killers, the town may or may not have beneficial roles (healers, cops, vigilantes (nothing more complex than those three usually)) and the killers might be in more than one group (depending on size of game). The basic principal is the same, majourity versus a killing minority.
its when factions, facelessmen and other completely different aspects enter the game that I consider it specialised.
but that's my take on it.

I've always viewed M&P as town vs. scum, with no multiple factions among scum.

That's as simple as it gets.

EDIT: Also ... holy hell, how did I get to be one of the old timers on this forum? I mean, dibs, Shin, Blend, and Tapper have been here longer than me, but all the rest look like complete noobs from my perspective. I still think of myself as being sort of new here.

Well yes that's mafia at its most basic I suppose, I would call that a vanilla game I guess.

After moving GG to mafia 99, sign-ups for mafia 99 are now closed. The game thread will be opened and alts sent out later today. Sign-ups for mafia 100 are still open.

Note that I will be changing a lot of the alt avatars. I have a list of all the avatars to be used, and have so far changed the ones that I have a password for, but more will be coming as I get the others reset. Some have been changed back to their classic version or older avatars, other have gotten completely new ones. Part of this was to get rid of the ToD faces and other things that have cropped up over the last while, but I've also changed things to setup a more unified and visually diverse set that will hopefully make the avatars more predictable and easier to tell apart. So instead of having Alkend, Atrahal Ampelas, Anomandaris and Anthras be two blue dragons, a greenish-blue dragon, a red dude and a red dragon, now they will be blue, green, red, yellow and black. Same goes for the 7 dragons starting with 'K'. There's also a better diversity of colour amongst al the dragons and all the warrens, so we don't have 6 different grey-on-black warrens and 7 blue dragons. All the dragons will have actual dragons in the avatar (except Ano, because GotM :D ), most with contrasting colours. The warrens will all be abstract stuff, like the classic fractals, though Ruse, Barghast, Tennes and Serc not quite as much. Things should also line up somewhat with the books, so if you're thinking about Osseric you'll think golden dragon from the books and that will match the Osseric avatar. Silchas is albino, Silanah is red, Korabas is huge, Tiam has many heads, Thyrllan is light, Rashan is dark, Kaschan is everyone's favourite sound wave and the Barghast warren is a mystical swamp sorta thing. I took liberties with the more tenuous ones, though, for colour and style's sake, so Tellan and Meanas are just sorta abstract fractals and Spite is pink :D . It might take some getting used to, but if we leave the avatars as this for a bit I think they'll work really great. Though I'm sure most of you will think I am putting way more effort into this than necessary and not care at all.
