By epic, I mean 67% of the book, 280 pages. Head of Zeus are a new publishing company who won a reportedly heated bidding war for this and have taken a bold step by giving us most of it for free (the book itself comes out on the 1st of March).

Anyway, I got it yesterday and finished it earlier on today, and it is really very good indeed. Think something like Abercrombie's attitude with Erikson's high-magic pyrotechnics. If the final third comes together like it's promising to, this is going to be an author worth sitting up and paying attention to. I'm certainly going to be getting ahold of the rest.

Boo, Kindle version for UK only...
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

How odd, since it's apparently going to be available in the US as well. Does this work?

No dice. I'm sure it's a distribution rights thing, but then why can they give the .epub to anybody? Oh well. I'll download the epub anyway. Might try converting to Kindle format with Calibre.

Get this: Luke Scull wrote a proposal for a Malazan computer game. Apparently it was an RPG, and ICE was keen, but Erikson wanted more of a first-person shooter, so it never got made.

This is out for the UK peeps among us (dunno if the rest of Europe can get hold of the ebook? Worth a try). The North Americans, unfortunately for you lot, have to wait till September.

I read the final third and it really is very good. Definitely worth y'all picking it up.
