Annual Reading Resolutions did you? will you?
#1
Posted 06 January 2013 - 11:59 PM
This year I'm resoluting (to not make up words) - to read:
The Thrawn trilogy (I've never read any Star Wars books)
Charles Stross's Laundry - at least two
some Neal Asher - at least Skinner, Brass Man, and Gridlinked
Book of the Long Sun - second half
and Asimov's Robot series
I plan to read a shitload more but these have been set aside for newer and more exciting books in the past so I must resolve myself to read them.
What about y'all?
Edit: Really need to get around to reading Gormenghast also. Started Titus Groan made it about 60 pages in and gave up. Must finish this/these. Also The Chronicles of Amber and Mythago Wood.

Lot of good stuff there.
Out of the stuff I already own, I would like to take care of the following:
Michael J. Sullivan's Riyria Revelations
Abercrombie's First Law and Best Served Cold
Bakker's Prince of Nothing
Joel Shepherd's Trial of Blood and Steel
Ricardo Pinto's Stone Dance of the Chameleon
as much of Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion/Elric stuff as I can

It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I'm sworn to read more of GGK's stuff (Tigana, Sarantine Mosaic). I really liked Lions of Al-Rassan, but disliked or detested everything else of his I've read (Under Heaven, Ysabel, Last Light of the Sun). A couple of my jiu jitsu teammates squeezed the oath out of me.
Also, the Conn Iggulden stuff, more Diane Wynne Jones, Elizabeth Moon's books, the Vorkosigian/Bujold books and the upcoming releases by Mark Lawrence, Bakker, Gene Wolfe, Rothfuss, Lynch (hopefully), Richard Morgan and Alistair Reynolds.

I have the ambition to read at the least 35 titles this year (and hopefully 50), not counting re-reads (but including graphic novels).
So far, I am starting with Naomi Novik's Temeraire stuff, as my GF made a present of the first omnibus. I'll mix it with Maus, followed by Blood and Bone and Red Country. I should get started on Daniel Abraham's solo work, and expand my collection of Iain (M) Banks and Stross as well as keeping up to date with Morgan, Lawrence, SE ICE and a few others. In non-fiction, I still have a few of Kissinger's biographies lying around and I really need to get a hold of Michael Chabon's latest.

Trying to keep it real...
the obvious reads for the year are
GUN MACHINE (in progress)
MEMORY OF LIGHT
RED COUNTRY
...then whenever they show up...
UNHOLY CONSULT
FALL OF LIGHT
SKIN GAME
and whatever Morgan's next LFFH book is called.
Then we have the 'commitments'...
Hearn's TRICKED and TRAPPED, because i have them and i just read the first three in the series.
The RIYRIA REVELATIONS, because they've been sitting in the TRP and i keep almost starting them.
And finally ANUBIS GATE, UNDER HEAVEN and the KETTY JAY trilo, because they're sitting in the TRP and have priority on an 'if i died and didn't read those i'd be bummed' basis.

Books in the TRP that probably will be read
Two Graves by Lincoln Child and Douglas Preston
Night of the Swarm by Robert Redick
Blood and Bone by Esslemont
Leviathan Wakes by James S A Corey
New books which should be out
Daylight War by Peter Brett
Necessary Evil by Ian Tregillis
A Memory of Light...
Emperor of Thorns by Mark Lawrence
Ace of Skulls by Chris Wooding
Skin Games by Butcher (thought I wonder if it wont be a early 2014 if Butcher keeps up his recent pattern of taking a bit more then a year)
Re-reads
Malazan and Esslemont books...which I haven't touched since Crippled God.
Then there are a long list of books I hope will be out and probably wont be either way 2013 seems to promise to be a pretty good year.

The Dark Defiles ......One of my more highly anticipated releases this year along with the Unholy Consult, River of Stars, Abaddon's Gate, Republic of Thieves, Emperor of Thorns, Doors of Stone (wishful thinking) and of course, A Memory of Light.

Add the two Banks books that have been sitting on my bookshelf for three years.
one of them is (i think) called Matter or something like that, no idea the other.

Let's see. After AMOL I'll defo be tackling RED COUNTRY properly.
Above and beyond that, there are some ToRead Pile books that have been sitting a while. Sam Sykes 2nd and 3rd books BLACK HALO and THE SKYBOUND SEA... they stare at me.
The two remaining Alex Verus books (TAKEN and CURSED) by Benedict Jacka.
THE TERROR by Dan Simmons (which I admit I was putting off till I got my dental issues sorted out (needed 3 cleanings and a root canal and crown....all done now, mouth in good shape again) as I know it deals with scurvy and I didn't want an unkempt mouth to keep me from enjoying. Weird, I know.
Finally get around to reading WYRD SISTERS by Pratchett so I can properly get stuck into the Witches books (so far I've only read the Watch books of Discworld).
Re-start and finish William Dietrich's THE DAKOTA CYPHER which I started more than once and put down for other books I'd been waiting for. It was good, but suffered from me wanting to read other things first. Kind of like Sharpe meets Indiana Jones.
Finally get back to both THE BLINDING KNIFE by Weeks and KING OF THORNS by Lawrence.
There's probably more, but I can't think of them right now.

Finish Black Company (2.5 books to go).
Tackle Wheel of Time, start to finish.
Finally read 2666.
Look at A Suitable Boy, perhaps even lift it from the shelf, and contemplate finally reading it "someday soon."

You see, I'm kinda crazy but I've already plotted out all of my reading for 2013 (down to the number of pages of each book each day.) 2013 will be the year of halving my trp.
Notables:
Finishing my reread of the Covenant books (plus Against All Things Ending for the first time)
The first three WoT books.
The Silmarillion, The Hobbit, and The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
Finishing The Long Price Quartet
The Foreigner novels (or at least the first 10 this year)
The Stones of Power novels.
I think it's going to be a good year.

The rest of The Wheel of Time (books 5 through 14).
The rest of The Dresden Files (books 4 through 14, plus stuff like Side Jobs).
Those are the only too things I'm determined to get read.

uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

As much of Eternal Champion books as I can (and there's a ton)
- Kraken by Mieville
Revelation space books by Reynolds
-buy the first 3 Culture books (saw a neat boxed set, but gonna wait for chapters to host its phenomenal "buy 3 get 1 free" book events)
-finally get through the first 2 Dark tower books in French, so as to move on and read the rest of the series.
-read "The heroes"
-take a look at the Ketty Jay books
-Check out Asher's new space-stuff.
-keep reading "The Secret City" books by Panov.
-Keep reading Perumov's Consistent stuff (mostly Godsdoom 2, since that's now projected as 6+ books)
-Look at Stephenson's Baroque Cycle
-Read Corvus Possibly wrap up the Macht trilo
-give Codex Alera another try.
-buy Sanderson's series after Mistborn and give that book a try.
current series to keep up with once they are out in mmpb:
-Scholes "psalms of Isaak"
-teh Dresdencrack!
-Tchaikovsky's "Shadows of the Apt"
-Lawrence's "Thorns" stuff
-Stross' Laundry Files
Baker's stuff
Peter Orullian's "unremembered" stuff
-new authors I'm likely to be interested in checking out:
Tim Wagonner's "nekropolis chronicles"
Anne Lyle- "Night's Masque"
Alliette de Bodard
Lavie Tidhar
And, naturally, the "must buy immediately" list:
