I have no idea where I should post this and decided to put it here 'cos you guys prob have a good knowledge base.

I saw someone on the site refer to Anomander Rake as Anomandaris Dragnipurake. Is that his name?? We can guess his full <first> name is Anomandaris because of the poem in GotM and the similarity with Andarist's name, but where does the Dragnipurake part come from??

-------------------------------------------
warren [wórr?n] (plural warrens) noun
1.rabbit habitat: a group of connected burrows where rabbits live and breed
2.rabbit colony: a colony of rabbits
3.crowded building or area: an area or building that is crowded or has a complicated layout
4.area for game animals: a piece of ground where game animals are kept and bred

[14th century. From Anglo-Norman warenne ‘enclosed area for breeding game’, of uncertain origin: perhaps, ultimately, from assumed Gaulish warenna ‘fenced-off area’, from assumed warros ‘post’.]

Hmmmmm.

Dragnipurake refers to Anomander's sword, Dragnipur.

Being the HoC forum, im not sure how far the OP has read. However I will say that Anomander is referred to by many different iterations of his name throughout the saga.

As far as I know all of the names with which he goes by are:

Anomander Rake
Anomander Purake
Anomandaris Dragnipurake
Anomandaris Purake
Anomander Irake
Anomandaris Irake
Lord of Moons Spawn
Son of Darkness
Knight of High House Dark
Mane of Chaos
Blacksword

I think there are others, but I probably dont remember them all.

I'm of the opinion that all of Anomander's various surname variations are consequential to his gaining custody of Dragnipur. From simple Anomandaris, he becomes Anomander Dragnipurake, which over the centuries gets shortened, truncated, and compressed into the form by which we are first introduced to him.

Did he get Dragnipur before the events of the MT prologue?

This would not be the forum in which to discuss that topic, even carefully, I don't think.

Good question, I've got nothing to reference as the timeline isn't that exact. Kinda leads to the question of whether the breaking with Mother Dark happened before he claimed Dragnipur as well, the part where he breaks with MD is when she calls him Anomandaris Dragnipurake, but as powerful as dragons are, they arent mentioned (that i recall) during any of the scenes inside Dragnipur,....

just my two cents...

after you mentioned it, I do seem to recall that part we just never 'see' them, even though it appears they are in fact there.

good catch, thanks!

I don't understand the point of dragons pulling the wagon.

The dragons pulling the wagon would be pseudo- indicative of Rake having Dragnipur prior to the MT prologue, is where that came from, so as to better determine whether "Dragnipurake" was his surname prior to or after he obtained Dragnipur

Ah. But there's no reason to assume Draconus did not kill dragons before Rake killed him, or that Rake didn't kill dragons after he killed Draconus.

Yeah, that was kinda the whole direction this topic took.

Is Rakes surname an indication of his having Dragnipur (Mother Dark refers to him as Anomandaris Dragnipurake, when she tuns away from them) or is it unrelated. To figure it out you'd really have to determine a timeline.

Again, it would probably be good to move all this to another forum. I'm replying in the General Books Topics.
