for what it is worth :
the author is a scholar, so he not only is capable to put a story together; but also there are some scientific background to said story (historical , that is!)
there are several cultures on earth ; were name (both familly and fisrt) can and indeed do change throughout life.
I am not speaking of the wifey that take the husband name after the wedding; but I do refer to thais (in the ethnical meaning, not the inhabitant of Thailand); burmese (ethenical too); and some of the malay ethny (it does also include about half of philipinos people).
Name are given to reflect some reality (facts or feelings or even potentialities that may come); so a small child with be given a name reflected the fact he small in size, or skinny, or ...; then if he/she do soemthing unexpected (in good or bad) his name (the legal one) will be changed to soemthing reflecting the deed but still close to the old one :
a girl can be bamed khao miao (sticky rice, often used as candy); and if they became a biatch later her name will become Khao dam (black rice, understand it as black heart).
I did witnessed such modification of name (by legal means) based on the acting, asuccess or failure or people during my time in Thailand. I was told that is common in S.E.A. ; so I would not be surprise the author used the same knowledge for Rake.
