And not to old. The only negative thing with lego is that it hurts like hell if you step on it.

Here is a short little video we uploaded to YouTube (private video, need link to view and such)
Baby Ace, escape artist in training
He's 1 week shy of 9 months old... He's wearing an 18 month old outfit and he's trying to get into my bedroom, where I was folding laundry at the time. My girlfriend took the video on her crappy phone, so it's not great quality, but he was doing this for 10 minutes or so, stopping only when I went back and forth through the house for more laundry.
Not sure of his exact size right now, he has an appointment coming up soon, but I'm guessing around 30 lbs and 30+ inches.
Luckily this door knob is 2 inches lower than all the other ones in the house, so he can't get those yet!
Just wanted to share, maybe some of you will laugh about it =)

Great video! Baby Ace looks like he's going to be a handful.
My daughter turned 1 today! She sleeps through the night finally, and started walking for real (beyond the 2 step fall down stage) last week. She's a happy kid, I never get tired of seeing her smile.

That's something peculiar and curious about Lego, that it hurts so much when you step on it.

Congratulations on getting her to sleep through the night. In her own room hopefully.
My guy is getting his mollars and has figured out how to open up the doors with lever handles. I had to go and put bolt locks on all of the doors on the main floor except for the bathroom.
How many fucking people do I have to hammer in order to get that across.

In her own bed, but not her own room. For her to get her own room we need to buy a heater (apartments aren't centrally heated in Japan, it's room by room). In the summertime, when it's hot, she'll be in her own room.

Congrats on working it out with her sleeping habits!
I hope Ace will start sleeping completely through the night, but that may be a bit. We haven't even started trying to move him out of the bedroom. He does start the night off sleeping in his crib more often than not... But 4-5 hours later he'll wake up enough to cry, so we'll put him in the bed to nurse/sleep.
How hard is it to get a heater that is safe to leave in her room? I mean, there are a ton of cheap floor heaters, but those aren't really baby/child safe or even common sense safe... How do you work that out?

OK. 9 hour flight with the baby coming up.
Keys and tips? I know about bringing whatever distractions I can (favorite books, toys, dvds, etc). Anything else?

Drugs... For either you or the kid. It doesn't matter which one as long as one of you is on drugs the flight will be fine.
Haven't had to fly with the guy yet. Our friends who have will give there kids benadryl before the flight. Not a lot just enough for there age. Other parents have gone the ipad route so that the kid can play games or watch movies. For 9 hours I would give serious thought to a combination of the two.
Yes yes I know I'm horrible to advocate drugging your beautiful child. But seriously your going to be on a flying coffin with a 1 year old for 9 hours. One of you should be on drugs. I want to take some drugs just thinking about being in a confined space for 9 hours with my guy.

..and just when you think you have the sleeping problems solved, up comes a new one.
My two and a half yr old has gone from going to bed relatively easily, to demanding the presence of the parent that isn't there - 'I want a mummy cuddle! mummmmeeee!' Which isn't good as whichever one of us isn't putting her to bed is feeding the boy, and can't just jump up. So endless wailing ensues, until boy has to be put down so she can be calmed down properly. Then she starts on all the delaying tactics, like wanting a story etc. By this time, small boy has been disturbed, is now awake too, and won't settle for ages.
Errg.
Also, my girl had a bit of a fit in town the other day as she didn't want to leave a shop, and I found out the hard way that when I pick her up, her legs are the perfect length to give me a good accurate kick in the nuts. She then kicked out so hard that her boot flew right off and into a passerby, who at least looked sympathetic as she picked it up and gave it back, while my little beauty howled under my arm, and I apologised. I used to walk past parents going though this with their kids, and always thought, no kid of mine will be behaving like that...

Some babies take to flying fine while others have a terrible time, especially with ear pain. Bring all the distractions but I'd recommend speaking to your family doctor for possible baby-friendly pain relief that you can give the baby during the flight if need ed.
My sister flew on two four hour flights (short stop between them) when she was ten or eleven months and didn't cause a fuss at all. So it isn't a given that babies will be upset/miserable on flights.
Personally, doping your child 'before' you even know if there is a need for it just seems like bad/lazy parenting to me.

Hi. Just to chime in, I would like to caution anyone about using benadryl in very small children for airplane flights. In older children and adults, it tends to have a sedating effect, which is great. However, in very young children, it can have this weird paradoxical effect. No one really knows why, but it tends to wire them instead, which could be a very bad thing. 9hrs in the air with a hopped up child and no antidote is a very bad scenario. Be very careful with this one and don't do it unless you have tried it before in your kid and you know how he or she responds.
I have heard of people bringing earplugs...for the people around them. Apparently this has been well received.
I don't have a baby, but standard pediatrician advice is to give them tylenol or ibuprofen ahead of time for the ear pain, and start feeding them (breast or bottle) as the plane starts going up, so as to help them equalize the ear pressure. And lots of toys.

This is a good point. Test the bendaryl before you give it to your angel on the flight. If it doesn't work then contact your pediatrition and get some shit that will work. . Bring earplugs for the other passengers on a 9 hour flight. hahahahahahahaha Just ask for the PA and tell everyone that the next nine hours are going to be the hours from hell. Congratulations they lost the flying lottery.

If your child is old enough, gum. Because if their ears get blocked, nothing works better and otherwise.... small child with uncomfortable or outright painful blocked ear is hell. On a long flight, pure hell.

In high school, based on how most boys acted like I was invisible, I was convinced that I would die a spinster. I'm not exactly sure when it happened, but somewhere during the university years, my status as a major nerd stopped being a liability and started being an asset when it came to attracting guys. A major asset. "You mean you play video games/read fantasy/watch sci-fi? You are a rare pearl among females and I will proceed to woo you until I win your favour!" For some reason, this never happened when I was younger, but then happened with startling frequency from university and onward.
Then my acne cleared up around the age of 26 and things got even easier. According to my husband, I attracted his notice when we were at the house of a mutual friend and I was discussing Final Fantasy with said friend in a way that made it obvious that I had played it.

I think it's just a maturity thing, and of course, I'm saying that in retrospect. I'm only 22 and I can still look back on things and think "What the fuck was going through my head? I was a stupid kid!" Those thoughts apply to every facet of my life haha, including my choice of women. Especially when I look to what some of those women I had no interest in back then, are doing now.

Damn, sorry I missed this...
The best thing for a baby (2 and under I guess?) Is to have them breaqst/bottle feeding DURING TAKE OFF.
This ensures that their ears pop as painlessly as possible. (It is the same technique many divers use when changing depth/pressure, moving the jaw etc)
This also helps them fall asleep (breast fed at least) more readily as it passes on positive hormones from the mother to promote relaxation. As far as dvds/games and such - I wouldn't recommend anything that requires or inspires ridiculous amounts of hysterical laughter or hyper-activity... So choose things that they typically enjoy at home before bedtime or right after naps/waking up - things that they automatically will relate (sub-consciously) to being tired, safe and comfortable.
It will help a lot... My GF is afraid of flying so I haven't had to journey with the baby in that way - but I've been advising parents for years now on travel, and so far I hear good things...
I really hope I'm not too late with this, Sorry for missing it - It's been a rather depressing few weeks here. Work's down, money's beyond tight... If they baby weren't breastfeeding I'd be in serious trouble... Not having to buy formula is so nice,

First, thank you to everyone who replied with advice. Next, full report.
She was great. 6hours 30 minutes flight (9 hour return, so we'll see).
She was tired, and did a little fussing, but she never out and out cried, much to the relief of everyone around us I'm sure. No problems with the ears at all. Most of the problem was how the plane was so fully lit most of the flight, so she had trouble getting to sleep, and every time she fell asleep, there'd be impecable timing of the bell followed by announcements. That was when the fussing happened, but she managed to get back to sleep relatively quickly. Never even used the DVD or any of her toys. If I had to guesstimate, she cried maybe a grand total of 15 minutes out of the 6 and a half hours.
Keeping fingers crossed that the return flight is more of the same....
