I liked the suggestion to have a thread for crosstalk between Malazan parents.

So advise away. Little people aren't for the weak in heart.

It's a choice that has to be made between Gust and the moderators. Nobody else.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

This thread has a soul since Gust started typing it. And it is wrong to kill anything with a soul. If you abort this thread I will kill you and your doctors and anyone else who supports killing!

Not surprising the tasteless comments and rep given for them are coming from non-parents.

A nice thread idea, but it looks like it needs a password for parents only.
The daughter is wonderful, she's playing with her little stuffed kitty and refusing to go to sleep despite it being about an hour later than she usually bunks down. She has her first ever cold, so she's taking naps at weird times and not sleeping very well. She isn't grumpy in the least though, which is great!

I don't believe that a thread has a soul until it's at least a page long—you could still abort it now without going to hell.

hand wringing moments make you a stronger parent, I hate the helpless feeling when my little girl is sick
HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. My second daughter, who is now six months old, just got her first cold as well. She's been breathing through her mouth for the past week, her little tongue sticking out all the while. She's about to start crawling any day, it seems like, which is scary as hell as my three year old girl seems to collect and randomly hide choking hazards.

Not being a parent I have very little in the way of tips, but one thing my parents taught me is it is important to look after your relationship with each other (the parents) as well as your children, your children will use your relationship as an example whether you like it or not, and whether they know it or not, it will also help to keep you more sane and happy in life, which is also an important influence on your kids.

I wouldn't know what children taste like but what do you expect from a thread about parenting posted in the Inn?

Now where did I put my list of dead baby jokes? I am sure it's here some where in the pile of jokes about watermelon eating black people and battered women.

...

More serious input. As a non-parent one thing that always irks me when I see parents interacting with their children is their tired dismissal of what ever the child has to say. I am sure its been a long day and your child is asking the 2000th inane question about a random object or concept but it's your child, if you feed it knowledge and you nuture its curiosity and thought processes, you will surely be less likely to raise a little monster with the empathy of a rock and the attention span of a sloth.

Similarly, give them pets. It's the easiest way to teach a small humanoid about compassion, empathy, responsibility, trust and love.

EDIT: And death. Children's pets will eventually die. There's a horrible lesson there.

I'm raising a crazy 17 mo old, now at my mother-in-law's for the holidays.

My sympathies to both of you with sick kids. Snot bubbles are no fun and my kid always spazzed out when we tried to wipe his nose.

Oh, my little one goes absolutely ape shit when I break out the aspirator. I hate to do it but listening to her trying to breath snot is just unbearable. And, yeah, the nose wipe she takes it like I'm trying to chloroform and kidnap her. She's almost better though so it's all good. I remember when my first one got the croup and she slept the night on my chest, every breath sounding like a struggle. It was horrible.

2 Malazan minors here...

6 almost 7 year old girl, who either is full of energy, running through the house with screams and pretending to be a ghost bumping into everything.. or she's drawing/reading..

turned 5 in september boy, autistic.. momentarily obsessed with "where's my water" (found via itunes)... i'm still tickled pink that we had no real meltdowns via wearing a mommy made costume for halloween.. AND he walked almost the WHOLE way trick-or-treating (until he got cold.. then he wanted to be carried).. every time we LEFT a house he'd say "trick-or-treat".. YAY... so much better than last year!!

getting a pet also helps bolster a Childs immune system.

Don't be one of those parents who wraps their child in cotton wool all the time, a little dirt and grime generaly don't hurt. If possible encourage them to be active, I feel kids these days aren't out doorsy enough.

I have no kids, I'm not really a fan of kids, so I was beaten to the punch with the joke posts.

I never wanted to have kids until a few years ago and now I can't wait to have a family. The change may have coincided with meeting my sweetheart boyfriend. And of course the female hormone clock ticking. I can't help it. I really really want to have kids.

Thread warning. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that joking about abortion in a Thread about parenting is going to start an argument. Being deliberately inflammatory will result in suspension.

Cheers.

I too have a child. He's 6.5 Months old!

I'm more than happy to help work things out with people. I've raised one kid (a much younger sibling) and am currently working on my own child! He's a bit bigger than most babies, so he's a little ahead of the curve on "milestones". I've done early childhood education before and am now a Pregnancy, Childbirth and Labor Coach/Teather as well as a Doula (emotional, physical and if need be bouncer 24/7 for Pregnant women who wish to have the extra help) So I hope I am able to help.

I'm more than happy to answer any questions about anything dealing with Pregnancy - I cannot give "Medical Advice" because it's against the law in the USA, but I can point you to sources of information, provide information and help you work out the best way to get an answer with your care provider.

A caveat - Ace (ACES are his initials, yes on purpose) is 6.5 Months old, over 28 inches tall and weighs close to 23 pounds. He was born at 11 lbs and 10 oz, 22" tall.. So he isn't growing at a crazy rate, he just started really big.

I am currently accepting donations of simpathy, LEGOS and Baby Gates... Well, it was worth a try... lols.

-Matt

Edite/PS: Simpathy because he's already walking if he can hold onto things, Baby gates for the same reason, and LEGOs because they're just damned cool.
