Well, I'm ambivalent about TLJ, but I'll risk it.

Maybe we're going to get ~Surprise Yuuzhan Vong~ in the next film to fill up the empty slate.

EDIT: Query. Is this movie for kids like Star Wars has always been? It doesn't feel like it.

I mean, it's not the kids who have seen it that have been doing all the complaining.

I'm not even sure what "for kids" means, really: my 8-yr-old daughter still likes Rogue One the best, I believe--and that's easily the least "for kids" of any of them.

I think the 'for kids' angle went out back in ep1 where they alternated scenes of jar jar rolling down a hill, with someone being cut in half. Also lets not forget the Dooku beheading and long, skin crisping immolation scene from ep3. My daughter walked in when that was on - her face said it all.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

I guess I meant not from a violence angle so much as a "is this material adventure-y enough for kids?"

Like the OT and to an extent the PT were both significantly swashbuckler-y serialized trilogies.

TFA was like that too.

TLJ felt like it was made for adults in a way. I mean aside from the falthier-chase/release...nothing else in the film feels all that adventure-like. It's all very ponderous, "What is myth? How do I deconstruct it?" stuff...There is very little here to relate to the other trilogies.

TLJ is probably the least kid-friendly... one entire plotline involves watching helpless people get blown up in spaceships. The end of ROGUE ONE is pretty close with the steady killfeste of the entire cast followed by Vader just cutting a bunch of dudes to slaw, but i give TLJ the edge with the face-mutilated bad guy and the good guys pretty much wiped out by the end. Also, the milk thing and rampant porg-abuse. No amount of broom zapping kids changes that.

...and i liked it.

The thing is, Lucas was heavily criticised for trying to make the prequels appear kid friendly, when the audience most looking forward to the films may have been kids for the OT, but weren't any more. Hence the backlash at the poop jokes and anything with Jar jar.

TLJ, I'd say, is aiming first for that audience, who are even older now; while attempting (successfully or not) to bring a new generation in.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Agreed.

And I think that TFA rode that line admirably, and was VERY kid friendly as far as "Adventurous Star Wars flick" goes. Minus possibly the Patricide.

What's interesting about the prequels is that if you ask anyone who WERE kids (I mean not all probably, but most) when the prequels came out...they LOVE them. The same way us "olds" love the OT. So yes you had this backlash when the prequels came out from the "olds" who loved the OT but grew up...you NOW have adults who loved the Prequels, and I've even found that they dislike the OT.

So what was once one camp of older adults who somewhat universally derided the prequels...and a bunch of kids no one listened to for "opinion"...is now TWO camps. OT fans who don't like the prequels, and Prequel fans who don't like the OT. And we've just created splinter groups from those two camps, with some Prequel people REJECTING the new sequels because the new films largely distance themselves from the Prequels, and OT people rejecting the Sequels because they aren't the OT characters they grew up with.

It's weird.

But yeah, there are a tonne more adults now that like the prequels fine...we just ignored them till now because they were kids.

I just wonder if the new sequels will create another group too?

For reference, I love the OT (was born the year it began in '77), I like the Prequels (and I actually think the story of the prequels is BETTER overall than the OT; Fight me), and I really enjoyed TFA and Rogue One...hated TLJ. So I'm kind of an anomaly in that I'm a "old" who likes the prequels just fine.

OT: Evil Empire dominates the Galaxy. Plucky Rebellion recruits a band of heroes, including a magic monk and his apprentice, to defeat the Evil bad guy and his apprentice. Fin.

PT: A bogus trade dispute is manufactured to create a rift in the current leadership of a free and representative republic of systems. An evil wizard pretends to be good, and manufactures a massive galaxy-spanning war and puppets both sides as the new leader while his apprentice leads the other, while simultaneously and slowly corrupting the most decorated hero magic monk from the big magic monks Order. Magic Monk Order finally figures things out, but it’s far too late as the evil wizard has already fully corrupted the hero monk and put into play a plan that sees the other magic monks executed…and paints them as villains to the rest of the galaxy in the history books. Fin.

You (and lots of others) may enjoy the more simplistic story more…but the more complex one has WAY more meat to it from a storytelling angle.

Sometimes "convoluted" is not an indicative of quality.

And here i thought fox only ruined great things (coughfireflycough)

Ill admit that the setup for original trilogy was more interesting, but the execution and writing... Cringy dialogue aside, i recall there was a youtuber who made like a 3 part series on how to improve the original trilogy. It involved very minor fixes and made for a much better story. Lucas is a terrible writer (and used to admit as much as well).

Flip side, Ep1 is the only time Liam neeson has died on screen im pretty sure. So it gets some points for that.

Batman Begins says hi.
Tatts early in SH game: Hmm, so if I'm liberal I should have voted Nein to make sure I'm president? I'm not that selfish

Tatts later in SAME game: I'm going to be a corrupt official. I have turned from my liberal ways, and now will vote against the pesky liberals. Viva la Fascism.
When Venge's turn comes, he will get a yes from Mess, Dolmen, Nevyn and Venge but a no from the 3 fascists and me. **** with my Government, and i'll **** with yours
