So as I recently acquired a kindle, I took the liberty of getting my favorite books on it.

Little did I know, that this would lead to a massive quality drop. For example, if I did not read the original books in paper form, I would now happily continue reading, my knowledge secure in the fact that it is Toe the elder and Toe the younger. Seriously, it says so 4 times in 2 pages!

Also, another good one that comes to mind (Felisin musing): Baudin, can nothing M1 you?

I am unsure what M1 is, but maybe it is a new synonym to kill that I am just unaware of?

Really, I am so disappointed in this purchase and I cannot understand how they can fail so utterly, when the original paper form is so well-written and must be available to them.

Wow. I've heard of serious issues with eBooks before due to convertion from paper to digital... but wow.

The two problems seem to be that 1) The program they use for convertion is crap and makes mistakes like 'M1' 2) The actual editing process is outsourced to India, where non-English speakers look for errors... thus, Toc becomes Toe and they leave M1 because they are unsure what is going on.

I would have thought that the first problem would mostly be gone with more recent books...

Man that's terrible (but funny). I own Toll the Hounds, Dust of Dreams, and The Crippled God on the Kindle. Aside from a few spacing issues/formatting issues (which were quite infrequent), I can't recall there being anything particularly bad about them.

Do you have the option to correct/edit ebooks?

Boo that sucks. Sounds like they didn't proofread it properly afterwards. Although, the conversion software can be shit, but sometimes a perfectly clean ebook will collect errors when it's put up for download by the vendor and no one is really sure why.

I dont want to be, you know, that guy.. But it is really distracting when you are living yourself into the epic scenes that SE is writing, especially in this book which is perhaps one of his strongest. I do not blame SE for it, but rather whoever is in charge of the conversation to kindle. Clearly, they didn't put a SE fan/someone who read the series before, in charge of proof-reading the converted version.

And that blows. Really much. This makes me really hesitant to get newer books on kindle, like Forge of darkness etc.

I read Forge of Darkness on Kindle PC, it's fine. Although I had to download the Windows app, because it wouldn't work on Cloud Reader. It was also okay on Android.

There's a certain shall we say "ambiguity" in your word choice there. Complaining about the type quality only counts if you did your shopping at the amazon storefront as opposed to other sources *cough* *cough* *torrent* *cough*
YMMV, but I've been happy with everything I've bought from the kindle store.

I'm reading Deadhouse Gates now on my Kindle and I haven't run into anything like this. A fix that might work is to delete the book from your Kindle and re-download it. Maybe there was an error during the first download and it corrupted the file a little?

EDIT: Just finished Memories of Ice on kindle-- and boy was it riddled with errors. Mostly missing punctuation points... I'd say 50-100.. which is easy enough to figure out but annoying. I did, however, see a Toe the younger. The most impressive one to me was Gruntle being turned into Grande. Their scanning hard/software needs an upgrade!


I've only read the Kindle versions of these books, and my only complaints are: the maps are a pain to look at for reference (as opposed to being able to just flip to the beginning, as with a book), there are occasional double-spaces, and missing periods and commas (and maybe two misspelled words total in the first two books).

I did purchase the legit version off of Amazon, though. I've heard that torrented versions are often of lower quality.

If you're thinking about getting a Kindle, I definitely recommend the one with a touch-screen and optional backlight. It makes navigating alot easier and faster, and it's nice to be able to read in low light or the dark.

My favorite thing about reading on a Kindle, especially for authors like SE who have an immense vocabulary, is being able to instantly define any word. I've found it very helpful for clarifying some dialogue, and visualizing descriptions that contain alot of medieval terms.
