Which edition to read?

I was at a friends house over the weekend and he recommended this series to me. However he told me that it was originally published in the U.K. And when they brought it to the U.S. the series was "toned down" quite a bit. I'm a really huge fan of violence and gore. So I was wondering does anyone know if the U.S. copies on Ebay and Amazon are toned down? And if so, which edition should I be looking for and where? Thanks for the info in advance.

My first read of GotM was a paperback U.K. first edition borrowed from a friend. I immediately ordered the entire 5 books from amazon, and just finished my first re-read of GotM which is U.S. TOR first edition hard cover- and I did not get the slightest suspicion that any of the content had been altered in any way.
As far as U.S. publishers toning down violence & such in books previously released elsewhere - I've never heard of such a thing without the author's explicit permission & a notation in the book stating precisely that. Additionally, I have read a good number of U.S. published books that vastly exceed Eriksons renditions of gore, violence, sex & mayhem and chaotic evil - nothing at all in the 5 Malazan Book of the Fallen series I have read so far that warrants even the slightest demand for censorship.

Yeh there original reasan that the Malazan books were withheld from America was not because of Violence or sex (well it has no sex actually) but because the books were too 'intelligent/complex' for Americans.
The violence that is in the books is not as bad as some other authors. There is a lot of violence though, but none of its gratitius, he just prefer to keep it real in battle scenes etc.
The only difference between the two different Vesions is that Gardens of the Moon for Americas was slightly different. That is that Gardens was written 7 years before the second book and there are a number of inconsistencies between Gardens and future books. However when an American publisher finally decided to publish his books Erikson decided to fix up a number of these mistakes in the first book.
That is the Only difference between the UK and American ones in that the first book is actually going to be better in have some mistakes fixed up, the future books are exactly the same.
Oh, And I hope you enjoy the series as well.

actually, I think the only thing that has been changed as far as I can tell is Orfantal's gender, Korlat refers to him as brother instead of sister...Fiddler is still too young, The pre-ritual Imass are still referred to as T'lan, etc.

I do not know if there is a difference. I read GOTM, obtaining through library since it was in hardback here.(U.S.)-I immediately ordered next 3 from amazon CA. I recently ordered MIDNIGHT TIDES, preordered THE BONE HUNTERS, and also my own copy of GOTM.
I love the normal cover of GOTM, U.S. version sucks. The only cover that was not changed in U.S. was DHG. MEMORIES OF ICE has a very bad cover in the U.S.
I wanted to underscore the fact that TOR(U.S.), should of kept original covers of U.K. and CA. Also DHG and MOI are in large trade paperback in the U.S.; Again TOR(U.S.) put a very bad cover on MOI.
Just glad I did not wate for U.S. versions.
Now, having just recieved MNT, conemplating rereads before I tackle MNT, now with my own copy of GOTM.

It is a bit harsh. I mean no-one could accuse GRRM and Jordan of being simplistic.

It's not because Americans can't handle intelligent or complex books, it's because American publishers (and American movie studios, and American TV executives, and American record companies, etc) have no respect for the intelligence of the American people, or more specifically, the segment of the American population that is into Fantasy. "Intelligent" is not seen as good business.
