Spoilers below, for people who still have to start BH, so beware ^^

I am around pag 150 or so myself, so I realize its dangerous for me to be here... wanted to ask this real quick :)

So, Mappo and Icarium found this sky keep in the ground, which was awesome ^^ But a couple of things about that...

1. I do have to say I felt they were pretty lucky to say the least. they just happen to find this landscape, with nothing but crevasses as far as the eye can see. And then they go down a random one and find this...

2. Mappo seems a bit reluctant at first. Or perhaps carefull is a better word... anyway at some point he says "shall I try a finger I wont miss much?" I grinned here, cause I thought it was a sarcastic remark, but when I turned the page I was suprised to find that he actually sticks his finger through... and then his hand :D

3 And finaly the point that got me here: the way I read it, they walked through an entranceway, into the sky keep, and found another massive floating fortress... a sky keep whithin a sky keep? ...strange...

So what do you think?

anyway, like the book so far, just as the other ones - Ill definatly be reading more of this ^^ thanks for replying everybody!

i think they descend into that particular chasm because the story needs them to find the keep. as for the reason why there is a sky-keep inside a sky-keep, well, why should anything about a sky-keep seem strange? we know next to nothing about how they work.

'Power draws power' is a running theme in the MBF. (...and my electricity bill, but i digress...)

Sure, they 'randomly' walked down the one crevasse for a hundred miles in every direction that just happened to contain a crashed skykeep where someone did something horrible to an aspected dragon, but that's actually the point... something incredibly powerful happened in that skykeep, and someone incredibly powerful - Icarium - being in the neighborhood would be drawn there, arguably moreso with a second near-ascendent - Mappo - along.

As for the size of the skykeep, the ones we've seen before this were Moon's Spawn and (arguably) Drift Avalii, and those were, implictly because it's not really stated in GotM, MoI or Hoc, pretty damn huge. Think of it like one of those medieval cities that start with an outer wall, then the city inside the walls, and a keep inside a second set of walls at the center of all of that.

Moon's Spawn's size I don't think is ever given, explicitly, but it seems to be pretty gigantic. Like it's literally a bigass flying mountain. You could put a lot of stuff inside there, even another fortress.

Think of it this way... the term 'skykeep' is misleading.... a 'skykeep' is a city. Not a town, not a village, not a medieval 'keep' or a big castle, but an actual massive city built into a chunk of flying rock designed to accomodate many many many thousands of people, if not the much bigger K'chain as we saw with the Skykeeps hiding in the Impy Warren in TB.

Take your average city, maybe not NYC or London but something a little more humble for wherever you live. Now, stick a castle in the middle of it, and you still have miles of room on every side. Hell, the average professonal sports arena is probably a good comparitor size-wise and most cities have at least one of those sitting around.

Now think of that in the three dimensional context of a city carved into a chunk of rock, when people can live not only around the castle, but over and under it.

It's BIG.

Yep.

As I recall, in GotM, when Moon's Spawn was hovering over Darujhistan, much, maybe even most of the city lay in its shadow. And Darujhistan is one of the bigger, more important cities in the series.

When I say I imagine it like a bigass floating mountain, I mean roughly this size, but, you know, up in the sky: Mount Tamalpais. That's the city of Berkeley in the foreground, btw.

I have another question regarding the skykeep. Does the fact that the specific dragon crucified in the skykeep was Sorrit, who's aspected warren is Serc, have something to do with the fact that the skykeeps are capable of flying? I know that we've been told that there's generally two dragons for each warren, and at the sametime we know of at least 13 skykeeps (11 in the imperial warren, Moons Spawn and this one that Iccy discovers) and thus there shouldn't be enough dragons to keep them all flying/floating. But is the keeps, maybe, somehow connected and thus only need one dragon? I mean, the Short-tails seem to locate the keep quickly after Ganath's ritual stops being effictive and maybe they need this one to repair the other ones, if I'm not mistaken it has in one of the ealier books been described have the keeps all crashed at some point (I think it was Osric talking to L'oric in HoC). This would mean that this specific keep is very important for the short tails and their keeps.

Seeing as the skykeeps have been mostly forgotten and is unknown about it probably means they disappeared a long time ago, which probably fits with the fact that an otherwise powerful Omtose Phellack ritual has exhausted all the power invested in it, thus meaning that this keep is connected to the other ones which are now somehow floating again inside the imperial warren. If this is true does that mean that there's another dragon somewhere who should be alert/afraid?

I know Moons Spawn is floating just fine (at least until the end of MoI) which doesn't fit with my theory, but could it have something to do with the fact that Rake is a soletaken eleint? Which would of course mean that the keeps just need an eleint and not ones specifically connected to Serc, and thus all dragons should be aware of the Nah'ruk!

Maybe this theory completely completely crazy and I should stop wasting my time and instead just RAFO. Still hoping that some of you veterans can help me out a bit:D
