Gaskir knelt beside the corpse, or what was left of it. "You alright there Ten?"
"Fine sir"
Penrose vomited noisily.
"For the god's sake Penrose get it together or get the fuck out of here," Gaskir wasn't in the mood to molly coddle a weakling, especially not a foreign weakling.
Gaskir resumed his study, finally admitting this was well out of his league, he stood and walked over to where Commander Warten was speaking with the imperial secretary.
Warten looked up as Gaskir approached, "Sergeant?"
"It's outside my experience sir, I can tell you he's dead, and who ever they were made a fucking mess of him. We need a seeker if you want to follow it anywhere."
Warten looked in askance at the secretary, who shook his head, "Sorry commander, we can't spare a seeker for this, we know it was the Junra anyway."
Warten bridled, "We know nothing of the sort!"
"Yes we do, this is an Imperial matter now, house Junra and Finara will cease this infighting and get our city back to normal, thank you for your time."
And just like that the watch was dismissed, dismissed from a murder scene, by a snivelling little bureaucrat. Gaskir didn't like being in this part of the city, he didn't give a damn if the nobles slaughtered each other for fun and left none standing. But he would be damned if some imperial prig was going to push him out of a case.
"Gaskir, how were those imperial pricks there again so quickly today?"
Gaskir snorted in surprise, "imperial agents sir, everywhere, thought you knew that."
"Everywhere?" the commander stopped and turned to Gaskir, "even in the watch?"
"Most definitely in the watch sir, how else would they have heard about the Junra kid at the crossroads last week?"
Warten cursed and resumed walking, "I'll be damned if that little shit is going to stop me doing my job, the Emperor brought me in personally to keep this city straight."
Gaskir pursed his lips, "Hmm, well sir as much as I hate an imperial nose up my ass, its hard to avoid it" he waited for a response, when none was forthcoming he continued, "there are ways for us to follow this on though sir."
Warten didn't even break step, "That's why you're here Gaskir, what do you need?"
"Not what, sir, who" he took a breath, "a few men of my old cohort, they operate down in the low town."
"Operate?"
"Operate"
"Alright, but I want to meet them before we start this."


Gaskir was sitting at his table waiting for Hog and the Wolf, he was nervous, would they agree to work with the commander? Could he convince them that Warten could be trusted, that he was nothing like old rotten tooth his predecessor?
He looked up at Hog as he stumbled in the door, battered and bruised he slumped into the chair opposite Gaskir and waved for an ale.
"What the fuck happened this time?"
"Tattersail" Hog croaked
"God's, what is it with you and pissing off the cities bashers???"
"Wasn't my fault, another one of Starling's girls got killed tonight, some little Finara shit, Tatts thought I knew more about it after my troubles last week."
Gaskir leaned forward, "A Finara? Starling hit back?"
Hog nodded, "Heard the job was already done when the contractor got there"
Gaskir sat in silence, for a minute, digesting what Hog had told him, finally he spoke, "Hog, theres somone you and the Wolf need to meet, I have a job for you'se"
