I fell off the side of the earth into the primordial void of Ginnungagap. :wallbash: Have attempted to resume painting here in the bottom of the abyss after several years, however. Would anyone have time for a redline if I uploaded something?
Still suffering from an attention span of minus five minutes plus a lingering artist's block, and have not been able to make much progress with the oldies...sob.

In!

I've been dodging the tablet all month due to work issues. Even had to step away from the mafiaz.

I have time now though since semesters pretty much done so would be happy to review your stuff :crybaby:

Yay! :-D Looking forward to new creations from you as well, when you get the tablet attached again.
Sorry Grim for not getting to tackle yours in time. :wallbash:

This is quite a mess, will be adding textures and more shadows later... Everyone and their pet eleints are painting over here, so now that I have a good display, must try to reawaken the old skill! So far the technique feels a bit alien, what with methodically having inked everything since the last Ice Age. :crybaby:

Massive file as usual.
Spoiler

I had an increase of work as well, and then spring for some reason discovered this arctic hinterland of the world. That marked the start of the sauvakävely season...

Ok here we go:

Posted Image

1 is shorter than 2

3 looks a bit too uneven for armour plate

4 looks fine for me though also a bit uneven

5 Might need a hazing or darkening. I understand its a night situation but maybe you need some fog effect? I dunno

So far its looking good. I like the Skurj. the idea of glowing teeth might be intensified by stronger contrast.

Thanks!! :-D The armor is lore-hardened granite scale mail (some of them have granite swords as well; seems to work in that universe in spite of its regular brittleness...), haven't gotten around painting the details yet. So it would have a certain "uneven" quality I suppose? Did the angle of her torso look bad to you? I did have a reference of sorts for it, but not everything ends up fine and dandy in spite of those...

The angle of her torso did look a bit unusual considering that she is stabbing a Skurj. If the left boob and collar shift down a bit to match the torso lines of the belt there'd be a bit of solidity to her stance but really its not bad, I see why the angle is the way it is, 3 is just my take on it.

I think I'll try changing it a bit. Also the shoulder guards give me constant gray hairs; have tried to keep the armor style constant but they scream for a redesign. Well, after photographing some real medieval suits of armor abroad, I ought to dig out those pics for references...

Ermahgerd purdy fluvers! :-D I like the contrasts created by the blue/green shadows and the pale skintone.

Yeah that site was FULL of bugs. I'm not sure why but I kept losing stuff and the submission process was...unique.

I for one welcome the move.

@ Grim: Did you use Doctor Who as a reference?

If you did I think this was inevitable and also awesome. If you didn't I'm still happy to see this thread get some art in. I like the colors aswell. Your control of the blend between cool and warm is really great. The eyes are a bit too perfect for the rest of your portrait, but I really like the detail on 'em. :p

Its been so long since I picked up my tablet my elbow is practically creaking.

Posted ImagePosted Image

Warm ups of Kitai from Codex Alera and Korra from The Legend of Korra. Please feel free to crit me to death. I've dulled quite a bit.

The malazan projects I have in mind haven't really come together. Scenes from OST and Stonewielder have not yet driven me to paint anything but I've mulled a few ideas over.

Put some grease on that elbow! //shot for a horrible pun
I'll have a glance at them tomorrow (and have to do some minor acrobatics in front of a mirror, apparently, to get a sense of Korra's leg :-D). Did you still want feedback on that story exercise, or did you get past any blocks?

What kind of family background does Kita have (Caucasian, mixed...?)? That would affect her looks to a degree.

After striking some funny poses I realized I'm not as limber as Korra (and not sure actually how high one might raise their leg in that position...) so that's as much as I got out of her. Remember that the body rotates and that affects the placement of the hips. The arms would require a fair deal of foreshortening (a suggestion drawn in), also her legs should be a mite longer.

Now, Kita:

1: Head: she's tilting it forwards. The nostrils would not be visible; lower her nose/eyes a bit.
2. Her breasts are too high up. Unless she has implants or firm support/corset, their outlines will not show past the armpits. My suggestion is in "cold weather mode", so one might still lower them a bit from that.
3. Lower the collarbones.
4 Push her hips "forwards". Typical for women, also they have more fat layer in the stomach area than men to protect various reproductive functions.

Hope that helps! :-D

Oh wow thats looking thorough.

I tried the acrobatics myself this morning and I concur, the human body has its limits, Avatar or not.

Thanks alot for these Kaamos.

Kitai is a different kettle of fish altogether. You'd have to read the book for the full story but she has some fairly exotic features.

Tried to mush asiatic, and european together but the cheek bones might need to be sharper and the nose may be too heavy.

The Korra picture is a pipe line idea. not very sure what I'm gunning for there. anyways these are just warm up artwork. on to proper malazan projects now. might need a reread or too for inspiration even and that's always a good thing.

Looking good!

What I like are the facial expressions and the choice of sky colour and texture.

I think there's a bit of a page imbalance, maybe throw a few more structures in the background? Or an alien?

I also like the text you got in there, is that Helvetica?

I could lower the planets down and up the opacity on them a bit, reckon that might help?

The font is something called 'RBNo2 Light'
Just one I downloaded from somewhere. Maybe dafont it's where I get most of my font from.

I like the planet placement tbh. It kinda scales the piece up to "grand". I'm just an opinion on that imbalance. I tend to cramp up my page and I think you've let yours breathe. Maybe scale up the mountains in the distance instead? Some kind of cliff plateau type vibe type thingy could ground things out and act as a counter point to the space craft to the left.

That space craft can haze out a bit and assume a less striking colour scheme. it's detail that catches the eye so maybe that's why I look at the left far more than I look at the centre or right.

Thanks for the link CN. Great resource!
