Posted Image Almost finished TDtCB and I am very pleased! What an excellent read, and no, Anasurimbor is NOT my favourite character, for that, my friends, is Cnaiur. From the hype I had expected it to be far more complicated with many more characters but it works nicely as it is. Maybe a bit more action would have been good but I ain't finished yet Posted Image

Yeah, he does have a lot to offer in that debate, I must say. In fact, if you want to see more of what he's said on matters, I'd recommend you go to his official forum, seeing how he posts there quite frequently. If you do go, scroll down to Author Q&A or General Discussion. There's an 8 page discussion there that is fascinating, even if I'm a bit too late to join in with any effectiveness Posted Image Here's the link:

Just finished TDtCB...FINALLY!...Really enjoyed it. A good break from SE's writing style. But is it just me or did the novel just END. There was no conclusion just, oh Akka found the Consult...and okay the endPosted Image...lol...would've liked a better conclusion, nevertheless great read. Already go WP and noticed he thanked Steven Erikson in therePosted Image Which is sort of true, only reason I picked it up because it was SE recommended lol.

@Folken - it's a reasonable 'dislike', but i actually think it makes the books a bit more of a realistic read. I enjoy Erikson's and Martin's female characters tremendously, but fair bet there were no six-foot, sword-swinging, armoured women in the Crusades. I don't doubt it may cost Bakker some readers tho'.

@47 - indeed. The way he writes them walking up into the sky and proceeding to wreak havoc is amazing. Equally so is that they can be taken down fairly easily if a token is handy. The charge of the Shrial Knights against the Cishaurim in the second book was amazing.

- Abyss, thought the Scarlet School needed a good a$$-kicking.

OK, to continue a thread I started earlier, without realising I had already posted here...

but I just thought of something... didnt you say you were going to some church thing or whatever? cause well... uhm... this series would go over well in that case. quite well.
well to be fair, as I said I took MBOTF and no one said anything. It will just be something I will be reading in my quiet time, and not trying to push fantasy ideas down kids throats. If I did that, I'd be lynched...
All the books are out in the US correct?

Well it's not so much of a dislike that I want to put the book down. I'm just saying I'd prefer to have women portrayed a bit more powerful. Mind you I'm not very far in the novel, so my opinion may change later on. But so far its the typical "woman" image being portrayed. Plus like Abyss said it does make the book have a more realistic approach, as women weren't very high in power all things considered...but then again this is a Fantasy genre so the authors don't have to stick to the gender mentality.

What??? I thought the bloody book wasn't going to be released until Nov. 2004 Posted Image!! How did you get hold of it?.....er by the way, hello everyone (haven't used this particular thread before).

I read Book 1 and found it a good enough diversion until SE's next book (I also believe that SE's naturally become something of a trend-setter, if you catch my meaning Posted Image, but that's ok because I can't get enough of his work).

But when was Bakker's book 2 published?...or have I misunderstood the conversation?

Okay since all of you have finished the book...I need a little bit of help.
So since I have nothing to read, and I was getting bored with Bakker I decided to re-read Dune Chronicles. Now all was good for a time and then I picked up Bakker again and now I really enjoy it. So...continue reading Dune Chronicles or finish Darkness that come Before and go back to Dune OR Finish DtcB and move on to Warrior Prophet?
Any one read that book? Any good?

I must agree....i found Kellhus to be too sly and untrustworthy, but he is still an excellent character and i look forward to seeing more of him.

Cnaiur is definately one of my fav characters, along with Maithanet (love the mystery surrounding him) and Achamian (i think there is a lot more to this guy than we know...).

Cant wait for The Warrior Prophet to come out. Unfortunately i wouldnt have a clue when thats going to be.

I thought I was hallucinating when I saw Mithfanion and some other familiar web-names mentioned - awesome. Mr. Bakker seems like such a down to earth guy... a guy I would love to sit down and have a few beers with.

Anyway I think you're probably right... and hopefully Erikson will become more popular when BH comes out...

I thought it was better than the first one, Mith. Since that was the first novel there was obviously a lot of introductory stuff that needed to take place. This one just takes off from where the last one left off and doesn't stop.

Bakker's descriptions of the Holy Wars slow and tedious journey south are fantastic. I love the gritty descriptions and the author sure isn't afraid to describe what an army over 200,000 strong does during battle and also after. Makes it very realistic in my opinion, like the way Martin does.

All in all I liked it better than Erikson's past two books and would put it up there with Martin's stuff. The characters in this book and the one before it are some of the most realistic characters I have ever read. I can't say enough good things about this series so far. Bakker is definitely in a class with Erikson and Martin, no question.
