Okay, so it's not much like the grubs in Prometheus, but I'm still stumped. The situation: previous tenants had left a large pot with a scabby-looking azalea, a few rocks, weeds, bottlecaps and a whole load of cigarette butts on the balcony. Being a lazy sod, I just kind of ignored it and started about potting my own herb garden on the other end of the balcony.

ANYWAY. Today I decided to roll up my sleeves and do something about that eyesore of a pot. So I picked out all the cigarette butts and bottle caps, set aside the rocks, pulled up the weeds and dug out the azalea. I'm tossing dirt around with my spade to break up any remaining roots and loosen the soil, but I keep finding these really solid clumps - and when I break them open...

Drop bear larvae. You gotta raise them in your pouch.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

looks like the obese brother of the Witchetty grub ...

I'd pour petrol over the pot and contents and light that mother effer up. Nothing good will come from this.

Not what I want to see when I've been drinking. Then again, at this point I think I've had too much alcohol to even be remotely disgusted.

You should adopt one and name it Grub.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

With a nod to the various words of advice on this thread, I can now say that I've done the logical thing of soaking the dirt in methylated spirits and setting fire to it to create a glorious torch in honour of Tellan shovelling the dirt into a big plastic garbage bag that I may need help taking downstairs and disposing of, as it is quite heavy :)

EDIT: Or I could tie a rope to it and lower it from the balcony, that's totally a better way of doing it (particularly since the mangled bits of azalea seem to have poked random holes in the bag)

Oh yes, discovered amongst the treasures of ancient cigarette filters and bent bottle caps - which, by the way, were far too deeply buried to have been idly discarded in the pot. I suspect the roots of the azalea dragged them down into the gritty depths thinking they were food. That would also explain the tiny bones littered amongst the grubs.

Probably a good thing I got rid of it...

Baby Graboids.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Clearly the azalea is an alien in disguise and the grubs are the foetal form waiting for the time to be right to take over the world and subjugate humanity.

Well, they're in the wheelie bin now with the corpse of their mother/father. Take that, alien invaders!

You should have set fire to that thing, just to be sure. Seriously nuke the dumpster you threw it in.

Btw what would have you done if the bag broke while you were lowering it from your balcony?

I would have run downstairs with a broom and just swept all the dirt towards the lawn, then grabbed the hose and watered it in. That being said, it wasn't a risk as I dragged it down the stairs instead :)

I tell you what, lifting that much dirt into a chest-high wheelie bin is HARD. I ended up laying the bin on its side, rolling the bag of dirt onto the lid, then shutting the lid and righting the bin. I IS BE CLEVAR.
