Walking through the the local book shop the other day, to pick up something new to read and i notice that the finally released 'A Dance with Dragons' in paper back. well i wasn't keen on buying it because i already bought the hard back version on release. But i did notice that like the third A Song of Ice and Fire book it was split in two parts (Some stupid uk publisher scam to make you buy two 20 dollar paperbacks to read one book), with a sub-title for each part
The first part was titled
'A Dance with Dragons pt 1- Dreams with Dust'
obviously a blatant rip off the title Dust of dreams
what's next
a 'winds of winter' pt 1 -Hounds of the toll

I don't see any connection at all. The Malazan Book of the Fallen may have a following but it is not even remotely as big as Song of Ice and Fire. The Dust of Dreams title was coined like 5 or 6 years ago. It is not some kind of golden catch phrase that has reverberated through the halls of Fantasy litterature. It is just a title. I think Martin is more than capable of coming up with his own flowery titles.

I dont know if Martin names the sub-titles or the publishers on the Harper-Collins ASOIAF novels. But of all the phrases in all the books in the 'ASOIAF' series you don't think they couldn't find a phrase which isn't similar. And even though it might not be as popular, Malazan is still a fairly prominent fantasy series with many of the people who i know that have read 'ASOIAF' having heard of it while googling 'whats the best fantasy novel after Game of Thrones'. You dont think that they will have questions of why a Malazan book and a Dance of Dragons book having the same name. What happens when some one buys some one a gift and ends up buying the wrong book.
You cant honestly tell me there wont be any problems stemming from this.

I haven't read an ASOIAF book since the third one but could it be that the title relates to an event or phrase in the book? Just like Dust of Dreams has a meaning in the Malazan series?

Not that i recall, but it seems like the sub-titles dont corralate to a specific quote, as a Dance of Dragons pt 2 is titled as 'After the Feast'

Owl City has a song from 2011 called "Dreams Don't Turn to Dust"; obviously a rebuttal to SE's series.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

GG, boys.
You guys have helped me realise that this is all a non-issue that stems from my insecurities of the popularity of ASOIAF that i wish the malazan series would achieve.
Now
Imma goto my corner while i cry and await my friends to beat me up for even suggest such blasphemy against ASOIAF.

Sure do
Most paper back books in the major book chains in Australia cost around 20 dollars.

In Italy, all Malazan books are split into two separate editions, each costing around 17 euro, if I remember correctly. So that's about £13.50, or $21, for half of MoI, for example.
And for this astonishing price, you don't even get a random sub-title: It's just 'Part 1' and 'Part 2'

Yeah man, its ridiculous what publishes try to get away with. Just recently i convinced my mate to pick up the hard cover edition of a Storm of Swords instead because not only was it in one part but it was only 10 bucks more.

Yikes! I bought ASoIaF books 1-4 in MMPB for < $30, including tax. God bless Target. I've been getting the Malazan books in MMPB for ~ $7.50 each from Amazon, thanks to their 4-for-3 deals. Bibliophile that I am, I guess I'm lucky to live in the U.S.

I remember the first time I heard an American bitch about having to pay $30 for a hardcover. I laughed. It's even worse when they whine about having to shell out a whole $60 for a new game.
