Dude you literally pounded out a story in one go! Was the idea just sitting there? Waiting to go?

I had a title, which is generally where I tend to start. And the concept for the setting is one I've mulled over a few times -- I think I've even talked about it on here before, in the 'Your works in progress' thread. But the specific story was entirely new, yes. And I had a couple of attempts at the ending before I found one I liked, so don't think it was all plain sailing.

Oh ok so your story had some deep roots. It makes sense as you had a great feeling of depth behind it. I tried to step my stories into scenes but tying them together is tough.

It helps, of course, that it's set in an analogue of the real world, so you have ready-made depth of culture to draw on and spring from. If you find your stories lack depth, have you tried setting them in the real world? Urban fantasy might be your metier

Yes I realize fantasy world building was choking the story flow. I find it much easier using a narrow urban setting that needs little explanation at all.

Did you guys watch that urban fantasy webcam discussion that Patrick Rothfuss hosted (posted elsewhere on this site)? That's exactly one of the main discussions they have.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

I think I missed it. Will have to seek it out when I have time.

Submissions close in about 3 weeks. If you have submitted a story but it hasn't been posted in the submissions thread yet, don't worry, Shin will have it up in time for judging. For those of you who haven't submitted your stories yet you may want to get a move on. You'll probably want to allow yourself time to make any last minute changes

Is anyone else going to submit? We've technically hit the deadline, but 3 is the fewest number of submissions we have ever received.

Any others who feel they can be finished by the end of the month? I will extend the deadline if so (I don't want this to drag into the December holidays though, so end of November is as much as I will allow).

If no one else pipes up, I'll get the judges rustled up and have them do their job. :p

I think so. Fist Gamet seems to have missed this one which is a shame.

Shit, for whatever reason this has never come up on my radar. I remember stumbling across one of these a year or two ago, but it slipped my mind afterward. I'll have to keep on eye out for a 5th contest.

@Defiance, too bad you missed out on this one. Would be great to have more entries next round. Some of my favorite short stories are from this very competition. Always great to read the stuff of fellow forumites!
