The Assassin's Creed books, i'm more of an Assassin-type stories fan now than i did before, liked the Farseer (nearing half-way on Royal Assassin), The Night Angel trilogy, Stover's Caine, and would like to try Abyss & PG's recco of Col Buchanan's Farlander,

also, Elizabeth Moon's The Deeds of Paksenarrion(sp?) i've been curious about this one for quite some time now, since i first saw a trade paperback ver of this on the bookstore,

anyone read:

Paul Hoffman, Lev Grossman and E.E. Knight?

well, that's for now, this authors isn't much talked here, and i would like to know if it's worth it to acquire some of their books, thanks forum,

I read Moon's Pak's series back in high school...(over 20 years ago). They are a middle of the road fantasy series. I think Moon's military background gave some weight to Pak's training in the beginning of book 1. I'd say a 3 out of 5 star series and after 20 years I have no desire to reread them.

The Deeds of Paksenarrion was ok ,nothing mindblowing, a mainperson with a very black and white view of thing if I remember correctly. I bet she would have irritated my greatly if we went to school together.

I don't think it was so black and white at all. The point of Paksenarrion as a character is that she gets muddled up in grey things all the time, but finds her way to the white side after a while and some trouble. She does it more reliably than the others in the series, which is why she's a paladin and they're not.

Gird in particular is pretty grey, as a real character, even if he was doing the right things in a macro point of view.

I do have some slight problems with how weak the evil plots are once Paksenarrion and the other characters get to the white side of each story. It's as if the bad guys are mostly bluster or cool/dastardly plots acted upon 30 years ago or hundreds of years ago rather than cool/dastardly plots being acted upon now. But we're one book away from the end right now, so there's a shot at it being resolved.

It may be, I have only read the omnibus of the three first book, so hopefully there have been some evolution since then.

I'm sure plenty of y'all have read Tad Williams's Otherland series. I read the first one about a decade back and I'm considering giving it another shot. Should or shouldn't I?

I'm curious about that Natsume book, but I've not read it.

Williams's Otherland series is decently entertaining. Go for it without the expectations that it's going to blast your socks off or bring something amazing. Goes by pretty quick and the Bushman stuff is fun to read.

Otherland's got bloat, just like pretty much everything Williams writes, and it's more of a collage of older science fiction ideas than anything new, but it's certainly entertaining for the most part and has some pretty exceptional parts. Not more than the sum of its parts, yes, but some very good parts.

If by that you mean that Book 4 isn't quite up to scratch, I'll agree that it's a bit of a downturn and anticlimactic in places, though I don't think it's dramatically poorer than Books 1-3. but also I agree if by that you mean that if a book's worth of bloat was cut out it would be improved (in some cases it's not so much bloat as too many ideas and not enough will to be selective).

Look here.
And here.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

It has been proven beyond all reasonable doubt that the most powerful force on Wu is a bunch of messed-up Malazans with Moranth munitions.

I really enjoyed Somers' ELECTRIC CHURCH and DIGITAL PLAGUE, altho those may fairly be closer to dystopic futurism than actual cyberpunk.
In a similar vein is Kadrey's METROPHAGE, which you can grab for free from his site.

...now that i think of it, i haven't read anything that got down into good old-skool Gibson'esque hacking the 'Nets cyberpunk in a while...

I'd argue David Brin's Existence to be, if not inhabiting, then at least bordering the genre.

Anthony Ryan - Blood Song

I saw a recommendation by Linus Torvalds on his blog for this and thought I'd try it. Very good indeed; similarities to Paul Hoffman - Left Hand of God but more depth to the story.

Book 2 straight onto my amazon wishlist.
