But what happens then when the great white hope of the disenfranchised dissolves into nothing? People won't stop being angry and disenfranchised and they won't suddenly get smart either. Trump could be the first step down an ugly path. Similarly when Brexit takes forever here.

The only real answer, I think, is to deal with the growing inequality in society. Otherwise this will just get worse and worse until something gives.

Happy to report Speaker of the House Paul Ryan has a plan to deal with inequality and social mobility: http://www.theatlant...n-dream/508880/

Both of those guys sound like idiots.

One of them sounds like an idiot because he is intentionally muddying waters for the viewers at home, the other sounds like an idiot by association.

I really don't understand why anyone would agree to be interviewed by fox. You know you won't get anything across to their viewers, you know they are going to do their best to humiliate/discredit you, why do you feed the trolls?

Suddenly I'm pissed off.

Hmmm I don't think they like each other very much.

Does anyone like Tucker Carlson?

I'm not convinced that Tucker Carlson likes Tucker Carlson.

His humiliation by Jon Stewart on Crossfire all those years ago remains one of my favourite things.

"Voting is a privilege".

I don't think I like the way that was phrased.

Yeah, it's worryingly how often it means that.

Call me crazy, but this doesn't seem like good news. Trump today pretty much acknowledged Taiwan's independence from China, probably by accident.

That's probably going to have negative repercussions in the short term... but hey, if you're going to elect an ass who "always speaks his mind" and isn't beholden to anyone, this is exactly the kind of thing he should be doing! Everyone katowing to China's nonsensical make-believe has gone on long enough, now there's finally someone who's in a position to not care and stop katowing, and hopefully it'll finally end this "Chinese Taipei" farce.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Pretty much what D'rek said. I don't like Trump but anyone standing up to imperialists is a good thing in my book.

That's certainly a generous reading of what happened. I don't see how -- given Trump's longstanding and seemingly personal economic grudge against China -- one draws the conclusion his interest here is remotely about standing up to imperialism.

But even given the benefit of the doubt, "Someone needs to slay that dragon" and "We should send Sir Incompetence in to slay that dragon" strike me as distinct propositions.

It is more like the Chinese government is doing whatever it wants in Tibet/Taiwan/South China Sea. Anything to make life harder for them without the use of thermonuclear weaponry isn't too bad.
