Bush got FL, OH, NH, and CO in 2000, and only had 271. Ohio was worth more (it's 18 now), FL less (now 29). The only state currently a true swing that he lost was Iowa, but he also lost MO and IN which Obama won in 2008 but won't win this year. (Obama also won VA and NC in 2008 and might not this year). And Bush won NV too.




Edit: meant to say that I put Florida on my map last week, but Silver only gives a very slight edge to Obama there. He could very easily lose it; it's essentially a statistical tie. That's aside from the voting disasters we're already seeing. Also Silver suggested a couple of weeks ago that maybe Obama should concede FL.

Still a narrow electoral win. And Romney is not getting anything like this, unless something really crazy happens.

I think your boss is joking, but it's a mean joke and has classist overtones that aren't actually anywhere near reality. Most of the historical voting patterns in the modern era show a very different pattern than "the unemployed vote Democratic and the employed vote Republican".

We won't start getting results until about 10 hours from now unfortunately (and that's just for east coast states). Hopefully everything will be decided by the time you wake up in the morning, but it's not guaranteed.
