That's probably going to have negative repercussions in the short term... but hey, if you're going to elect an ass who "always speaks his mind" and isn't beholden to anyone, this is exactly the kind of thing he should be doing! That's certainly a generous reading of what happened. I don't see how -- given Trump's longstanding and seemingly personal economic grudge against China -- one draws the conclusion his interest here is remotely about standing up to imperialism.

But even given the benefit of the doubt, "Someone needs to slay that dragon" and "We should send Sir Incompetence in to slay that dragon" strike me as distinct propositions.

It is more like the Chinese government is doing whatever it wants in Tibet/Taiwan/South China Sea. Anything to make life harder for them without the use of thermonuclear weaponry isn't too bad.
