Is it me, or has the right in the US now literally gone insane? It seems they're now eagerly talking about sacrificing possibly millions - and certainly hundreds of thousands - of peoples', lives, by early relaxation of mitigation procedures, to make sure the economy stays on track. I'm not sure that they even want to realise that, even were the economy booming, having a few million people drop dead over a period of a few months wouldn't be good for anyone's bottom line.

If they take this route, which, astonishingly even for him, Trump has been making positive noises about, people will need to go to gaol; and the GOP should either cease to exist or be out of power forever. The Party of Lincoln will have become - even more than it is already - the Party of Corporate Mass Murderers.

'Sending People Back to Work Now Will Not Save the Economy. It Will Doom It.

[...] Let's recall why public health officials have asked Americans to stay home in the first place. It's not because COVID-19 is incredibly deadly (though it does appear to be more fatal than the flu). Rather, it's because the new coronavirus is so highly contagious that if even a small percentage of the people who stand to be infected end up hospitalized, it will completely swamp our health care system, as already seems to be happening in New York. If even 20 percent of Americans catch this thing in the next year—which is the sort of best-case scenario researchers are envisioning—vast swaths of the country will run out of hospital beds. We will not have enough room in intensive care units or available ventilators to properly care for the ill. Heck, we already don't have enough masks. Lots of people with COVID-19 will likely die because there simply will not be space or resources to keep them alive. People with other serious conditions will die as well, because they too will not be able to get care. All sorts of acute illnesses will become more deadly.

Many people will not return to their normal lives in a country that is being ravaged by an unchecked disease just because the president has announced a "reopening." Many aren't going to return to restaurants and bars or go on family vacations to Disney. Many companies aren't going to tell their employees to come back to the office. Many cities and states will keep businesses shut down in order to try to contain the illness as much as possible within their own borders. But some won't. And many Americans will try to resume life as usual, the same way many are ignoring the warnings to stay in now, which means the virus will continue spreading. We will have a half-functioning economy and nonfunctioning health care system, with untold numbers of Americans dying from an illness that causes victims to suffocate as fluid floods into their lungs, on the way to total organ failure.

[...] The coronavirus crisis is going to create a severe economic hardship. There's no escaping that. The question is whether it will be a short-lived disaster that we can begin pulling ourselves out of with the help of a serious public health mobilization, or if it will be a long, lingering horror we muddle through as people die. The fact that Trump is already having doubts about the half-measures he took last week unfortunately suggests he doesn't have the stomach or foresight to pick the right course, because he's too worried about the daily fluctuations of the stock market. Instead, he's steering us toward a long pandemic and a depression all at once.'

A couple of things - the GOP, since the southern strategy, has been absolutely the party of profits over humans. They are the example of corporate greed, and donald trump is a logical conclusion to their values.

The 'party of lincoln' they are not, and haven't been since they embraced racism and anti-abortion as single voter issues to try and stay relevant while only actually representing the rich.

They still like to call themselves that when they make their desultory and futile attempts to get African American voters on board. I guess this is a case of "What you do in the shadows"; there aren't any shadows to hide in any more, and it seems they're now in the process of visibly shrugging off their human skin suits.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. The biggest issue most Republicans have with Trump is that they say he says 'the quiet things' out loud. No dog whistles or hinting at things, he just comes out and says it.

I mean plenty of them are starting to join him with a certain amount of glee. The virus "only" kills 1%, right? And people with personal medical teams don't have to worry about universal 'do not resuscitate' rules.

Meanwhile the politicians are going on vacation (possibly to avoid using their senate majority due to quarantines, thanks Rand) and Lindsay Graham is worrying that those lazy nurses (who are dying as a result of Covid-19 infection) might decide to stop working if they get a decent unemployment benefit.

I think it's important to remember that this is also their strategy for dealing with global warming. And that is not limited to the US government.

'Joe Biden Accused of Sexual Assault by Former Staffer

[...] According to Reade, then-Senator Biden got her up against a wall, then proceeded to put his hand up her skirt. “He went down my skirt but then up inside it and he penetrated me with his fingers,” she said. When she reacted, Biden gruffly started telling her “you’re fine, it’s fine” before walking off. (Interview with Katie Halper)

Reade reportedly told friends about the incident at the time and attempted to file a report. In 2019, she approached Time’s Up with corroboration, but the organization was unable to help her because Biden is a political candidate and they feared losing their tax-exempt status.'

I can't believe a man known for inappropriately fondling and sniffing women would do such a thing.

And now we have Covid-19 making an eloquent case for Bernie's proposals re: universal health care.

Let's see how this pans out.

'Poll: Biden, Trump in Statistical Dead Heat for the White House

Trump’s approval ratings have been on the rise and that appears to be reflected in polls that ask about a potential matchup against former Vice President Joe Biden. Among registered voters, Biden has 49 percent support compared to Trump’s 47 percent, according to the latest Washington Post/ABC News poll. That difference is well within the poll’s margin of error of 3.5 percentage points and marks an increase for the president who was seven points behind Biden last month.

[...] The Washington Post/ABC poll has Trump receiving his first positive approval rating among the general population, with 48 percent saying they approve of the job he is doing as president while 46 disapprove. That is the highest approval rating in the poll that goes back to April 2017. Approval ratings are even higher when Americans were asked whether they approve of the job the president is doing on the coronavirus outbreak, with 51 percent expressing approval and 45 percent disapproval.'

I'm waiting for the articles where people interview poll respondents. I'm curious to know how anyone thinks Trump is handling this well. Is this a consequence of every network showing his live "briefings" where he paints a rosy picture? Is it because he was saying that things were going well last week? or is it simply that people are "rallying around the flag" in a crisis? Because nothing he has done has been particularly helpful (especially when compared to governors, etc).

'Tribe Believed To Have Been First Native Americans To Encounter Pilgrims 400 Years Ago Stripped Of Reservation Status By Trump

Despite being in the throes of a pandemic that's upended daily life in the United States, President Donald Trump's Department of Interior announced that it would be revoking the reservation status of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe—the Native American Tribe located in what is now Massachusetts.

[...] Tribal Chairman Cedric Cromwell said in a statement:

"Today's action was cruel and it was unnecessary. The Secretary [of the Interior Department] is under no court order to take our land out of trust. He is fully aware that litigation to uphold our status as a tribe eligible for the benefits of the Indian Reorganization Act is ongoing."
"It begs the question, what is driving our federal trustee's crusade against our reservation?"

After pointing out that this was the first time since the mid-twentieth century that an Interior secretary had taken such action, Cromwell continued:

"Regardless of the answer, we the People of the First Light have lived here since before there was a Secretary of the Interior, since before there was a State of Massachusetts, since before the Pilgrims arrived 400 years ago. We have survived, we will continue to survive. "

"These are our lands, these are the lands of our ancestors, and these will be the lands of our grandchildren. This Administration has come and it will go. But we will be here, always. And we will not rest until we are treated equally with other federally recognized tribes and the status of our reservation is confirmed."

Trump had feuded with the tribe over a planned gaming operation as recently as last year.'

Kinda strange seeing the media today running with a thought I’ve had for over a week now.

Cuomo 2020

This is a profoundly terrible idea. Cuomo has a certain presence on TV with the briefings, but as an actual governor, he's created feuds, a stagnant state legislature (which was only recently fixed by the destruction of the Independent Democrats by people trying to get more progressive things done), and a broken budget without anything major to show for it. He's also responsible for the slow failure of the subway system and the resignation of Byford (one of the few people in the world who can run a system that big and that fucked up).

He's almost as bad a presidential candidate as Tulsi Gabbard. Biden is preferable to Cuomo and I dislike Biden immensely.

Anderew Cuomo is someone who cannot truly get along with other people and his medium-ish levels of corruption and self-aggrandizement have made a NY government that is basically "don't piss off the self-anointed king or you won't get what you need to help people/fix broken systems".

There's a burgeoning obsession as to whether he has pierced nipples.

Does Andrew Cuomo have nipple piercings? The Internet seems to think so
