I've been told the series is really supposed to be a history of events in the Malazan World

Whoever told you that was silly.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

A bunch of people have. It doesn't really matter regardless. DG was the best book imo by far.

well, i always viewed it as a period of history experienced by us through unreliable POV's, not an actual history of events.

Again, it doesn't really matter that much. Point is that for me, Deadhouse Gates was the best written book in the series. In Duiker and Heboric he wrote his most human and believable characters. The viewpoints were almost all relevant and coherent, and the story was by FAR the most tangible of the series. This book made me feel like I was actually reading a story, rather than the loosely related collection of often boring, but sometimes brilliant, writings that the series becomes in later volumes.

I disagree. I love DG, don't get me wrong, but it's not my favorite out of the series. I also don't think any one book in the series really stands that far above the rest. There are books I like better, but it's never by much, because there are different things that I love about all of them.

No offense intended, but in a 10 volume series, some books are going to be better than others.

Certainly. We all have our favorites. I just don't really think any of them are "by far" better.

According to this poll (which we can assume is very scientific :)) Memories of Ice is by far the best novel of the series :D

and you've become quite reliable at commenting thus, over and over and over, in almost every thread I join. Irony.

I'm sorry if I liked the earlier volumes a lot better.

As simply as I could put it, Gardens of the Moon, once finished, convinced me to buy Deadhouse Gates; Deadhouse Gates, once finished, convinced me to buy all of the books that had been published up until that point.

Speaking as someone who was sold on the series from ~ chapter 2 of GotM, I'm still finding DG to be the weakest plot, so far. 1) The lack of characterization for Coltaine (SE breaks the "show, don't tell" rule often with this character); 2) the weak character arc for Felisin (angry brat for 80% of the novel); and 3) the long, dull stretches of not enough happening during the chain of dogs and Kalam storylines...all these add up to the most boring Malazan read for me so far. Of course it's all a matter of personal taste, and I suspect this book will still rate higher than 90% of fantasy books I'll read in my lifetime.

I just finished Midnight Tides, and that comes in at a close second for "least good" Malazan book. But probably only because I found it so hard to follow, what with all the new characters and so much going on.

I may have to do another of these polls after I finish Bonehunters. I'm nearly 300 pages in and I have yet to find a POV that I am less than thrilled with. This may turn out to be my favorite.

In other DG news, cyclopsean characters like Apt and Panek can now bat their single eyelids proudly, with the rash of good? publicity from the London olympics.
