Hello, fellow Malazanites,
I noted our distinct lack of a word/saying of the week on this site, and decided to change that.

Word/Saying/Quote of the week now will be on this thread!

The basic idea of this is that I post an "official" word(and definition), outdated saying, and quote every week, and they will hopefully inspire others to post their own throughout the week, sparking discussion and/ or a learning experience.

The rules:

1. The "official"weekly word will be bolded and underlined, in order to mark the beginning of a new week, starting TODAY, wednesday, January 18.

2. Word entries by everyone else must be underlined, and must include a definition. Definition may include an illustration.

3. Quotes and outdated sayings have no requirements, except they should have a source.

4. Nobody will attempt to censor or dispute your entry.

5. Don't be shy! Post any word that you find unique, interesting, archaic, or just plain weird. Discussion is welcome, although make sure you remember that everything this thread embodies is irrelevant, unnecessary, and completely inconsequential!

................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I'll start with the Weekly Word: Jan 18, 2012

Perambulator: (n), a small carriage in which a baby is pushed about.

Mary placed her child in the perambulator, but accidentally let go of it while walking on a steep hill.

Outdated saying: "That's the bee's knee's!" : describing something good, exciting

There's a fantastic Irish folk song, recorded by the Black Family, called "Wheel The Permabulator", which is where I first encountered the word.

This is a version by the Dublin City Ramblers, not quite as good but still good enough.

Word fans should also check out www.worldwidewords.org, which does a weekly newsletter containing a 'weird word of the week', normally something old or obsolete. This week's was Paraprosdokian, which betokens an expectation of something that is turned on its head. Frequently used to describe witticisms, and the newsletter offers several as examples of the form, including one from Dorothy Parker about a Yale prom, "If all the girls attending it were laid end to end, I wouldn't be at all surprised."

the bee's knee's is not outdated. I've heard it said in the last six months.

and perambulator is just the formal and full length version of pram.

Like the quote though :)
meh. Link was dead :(

If you've heard the bee's knees in the past 6 months (in a non joking manner) you are at least 90 years old, living in a retirement home, being pushed around in a perambulator.

I've always used the Phrontistery's International House of Logorrhea whenever I've wanted a fix of weird vocab. Some of the ones in there are the bee's knees!

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

"The bee's knees", along with "the dog's bollocks," "the cat's pyjamas" all come from the 1920s. http://www.worldwide.../qa/qa-bee1.htm. I do hear all three fairly regularly, but mainly, as the article says, in a knowingly old-fashioned sense.

HiddenOne. You son of a bitch. You slimy, skulking, low-posting scumbag. You knew it would come to this. Roundabout, maybe. Tortuous, certainly. But here we are, you and me again. I started the train on you so many many hours ago, and now I'm going to finish it. Die HO. Die. This is for last time, and this is for this game too. This is for all the people who died to your backstabbing, treacherous, "I sure don't know what's going on around here" filthy lying, deceitful ways. You son of a bitch. Whatever happens, this is justice. For me, this is justice. Vote HiddenOne Finally, I am at peace.

Who on this Earth with even an average education would consider 'acquiesce' even slightly unusual? You're posting in a forum of readers whose professed favourite author writes enormous, complex interconnected works and spares no effort for the lazy-minded! At least offer a challenge!

How about this one: 'tintamarre' (n.) -- a confusion of loud noises, especially brass

One of my favourites is 'sesquipedalian' (adj.) -- possessing many syllables. (I believe the the literal derivation is 'of many feet')

Careful, UoW, somebody could mistake you for a maledicent, with that kind of verbal abuse...or even a philosophunculist...:p

But I understand what you're saying.

And I am glad to say that Word of the Week is nudiustertian, adj, as it was started the day before yesterday.

I'm adding the word Extemporaneous ( adj, off the top of your head, without earlier thought) extemporaneously.
