I made a thread cause we all know that like FRINGE and LOST we will be discussing this show.

Most especially because as far as shows debuting out of the gate....holy shit! This two-part pilot was EXCELLENT.

Seriously, writing, editing, music, plotting, mysteries...I'm already totally hooked.

Just as my interest in a show that I enjoyed is waning (ONCE UPON A TIME), along comes a show like ALCATRAZ to show me just what prime time TV can really do.

This was amazing and has a LOT of potential.

Loving it so far.

Watched the first 2 episodes. Seems ok. Will really need to do something special to be avoid being a bigger budget version of THE 4400.

The Jack Sylvane character could be interesting if he gets to be a regular. Hurley is pretty much a portable computer for the detective, so his character needs more to do.
The female lead is cute and feisty, so i can watch her easily enough. And I've always had a thing for Parminder Nagra since her time in E.R. so hopefully she'll be in it more.
Sam Neill is going through the motions as far as I'm concerned, but that might be poor writing thus far.

So it's a bit of a mixed bag for me 'til now.

I'll give it a few more episodes, but I'm not confident that it will be worth following long term from what I've seen to this point. My biggest fear for the show, is that they are going to try and drag it on for ages with little or no progression of the overall story. Part of this stems from the whole LOST too-ing and fro-ing from season to season (and this is also a JJ Abrams baby), and the other is that all the episodes i've seen listed (9 so far) have the name of one of the disappeared and there are over 100 of them!!!!

Fingers crossed it'll be good, but so far it's .... meh.

I'm with QT on this one, I thought it was awesome. The only thing I didn't like was the female lead, but that's my own personal problem most likely. For as long as I can remember I've despised her type of female lead on TV. I wonder what show ruined it..

I called that
Spoiler

I can't decide if Neill is a bad guy or not, and I have no idea what's going on.

Monday's episode (the 3rd) was really good. Even though it concerned a kind of monster of the week thing, it was really good since Jorge Garcia got to act his ass off. He's so good as Doc Soto.

Also, apparently Sam Neill is a crack shot. Loved that.

Liking this show a lot so far.

They've been deluging us with ads for this for the last few weeks. It may be decent, but purely judging from the ads, it looks like shit.

Saying it's from the creators of "Lost" doesn't help either. :D

I will keep an eye on this thread to see if the General Love Indicator increases or dissipates.

I saw the first episode yesterday, I liked it, I liked it alot. It's a little 4400esque, but that's okay.
Screw you all, and have a nice day!

Dude, you have to watch the show to have an opinion. That is all. :D

Watched the 3rd ep. I liked Dr.Soto character's story in this one, though he is still basically mr. information. My original gripes remain, and I thought Sam Neill was terrible in this last episode. His character so far is just a mess (in my opinion) and it seems to me like they are trying too hard to be vague about what his motivations are, to keep an air of mystery. Unfortunately I'm caring less and less about what that mystery is.

For such a high profile show, this has been a massively underwhelming experience thus far.

I've only seen the first half of the 2hr pilot, but I thought it was quite the promising start. The acting isn't wowing me, which is surprising given the cast, but that just seems to always be an issue in the first few episodes.
OK, I think I got it, but just in case, can you say the whole thing over again? I wasn't really listening.

Ah, I think I may have figured something out...

Spoiler

Which raises the obvious question...

Spoiler

Is it...Hauser??? I'm going to say no, but they'll string us along about it for a season or so.

oh good, there's a thread!

SPOILERS SPOILERS UP TO LATEST EPISODE WITH BOMB GUY
SPOILERS SPOILERS
ALCATRAZ SPOILERS FROM BACK IN TIME SPOILERS.

What gives you the 'it's Lucie's daughter' idea? Because the idea that it's Lucie makes way more sense given Dr Beauregard still hanging around unaged.

I'm enjoying the show quite a bit. The lead cast isn't quite fascinating but keeps things moving, the actors they've gotten for the inmate-of-the-week have done great jobs (sniper guy was fantasticly creepy), enough to overcome what would otherwise be yet another boring crime-of-the-week procedural, and the overarcing story has me totally hooked, enough to overlook little things like the blatant NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN ripoff in the bank heist episode and the overtly going to die bomb disposal guy or Hauser stepping on a mine while sneaking up on bomb guy.

There seem to be three possibilities for the 63s right now...

TIME TRAVEL - seems like the obvious example, but Lucie and Dr Beauregard, and Hauser dropping dead bodies off for the Dr to 'fix' suggests this is unlikely.

SUSPENDED ANIMATION - totally possible. We don't know what Lucie or Beauregard were up to before we saw them in the pilot and they could have just been thawed, while whoever is behind the 63s is defrosting the inmates and guards as they need them.

CLONES - the only thing to support this theory would be Hauser expecting Beauregard to 'fix' people, but clones decanted at need would explain the lack of aging and the memory gaps.

The other big mystery is Granpa Madsen and his blood. At a complete guess, something in his blood facilitated whatever was done to the 63s, but at some point he escapes leading to when we see him running from his granddaughter and her soon to be splattered partner in the pilot.

Huh, I simply assumed it was time travel...but you're right...it could very well be suspended animation or clones. Huh. Good thoughts.

I also like the show and the overarcing story definitely keeps me interested if the villain-of-the-week idea gets old on any given episode. They always seem to (like LOST, FRINGE and ALIAS) give you little nuggets from the overarcing story to intrigue and push you to the next ep.

For me, THE RIVER is currently beating this show in the MUST watch immediately category, but it's still solidly #2.

Yeah time travel seemed like the go to explanation at the outset but other bits since then have suggested other possibilities, and JJ, in his TV work, routinely seems to be going down one path and then veers (with varying degrees of success), so we can't take anything for granted.

...relatedly, THEORY #4 - GENETICS - Lucie and/or Beauregard found an immortality gene in Granpa Madsen's blood and used it on the '63s along with her brainwashing techniques. Tho' since Ray Archer, Madsen's brother, has aged, this seems unlikely, unless they had to refine it first or something.

As an aside: I have RIVER dvr'd, will catch up eventually.

True, but

1) past-Lucy doesn't seem to know anything about what's really happening on the island.

2) present-Lucy's last name isn't Sengupta. It's Banerjee.

3) also, past-Lucy's first name has never been spoken, IIRC. We only assume it's Lucy.

Standard trope for immortals to change their name to hide the fact they are the same person. Not determinative but likely.

I'm up to speed with all these eps now.

While I enjoy the premise of the show, I really am struggling with the procedural 'time-criminal of the week' set-up. I hate procedurals and wish this part of the show would go die, in favour of a more serialised narrative.

That being said the mystery will keep me coming back for the remainder of this season.
I'm developing an unhealthy crush on the lead detective  ( despite the fact her character is made of cardboard). I am also really enjoying the flashbacks to '63 more than I thought I would.

Hurley and Sam Neil need more to do, although the latter is steadily becoming more complex.

Bring back the first criminal guy! He was awesome and should be included more .

Are they all working for the Warden? Cause...that would be way too easy?

Wow. I don't know if anyone has watched the last 3 episodes (2nd to last and 2 hour finale, actually) but they were both quite good. Questions answered and plot moving forward. I want more B)
