Well, the queue is short and if people liked this experiment, I'll start on refining 0.66 straight away.

I'd start refining asap if I were you. That is just my two cents.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

and that is the end of JLV's Alisa ibn Ben Khar. Pity, I really liked that character's write up and I think JLV abused the economic system like none other.

Merchants aren't looking too good at the moment. On the plus side D'rek has called out Lyca and is dead on for the off thread talk. Too bad the raiders can talk as well or they might really jump on that.

True. Mind, they'll just concentrate powers on one player. Three of them still in the game, and if either Galain or HP dies, the High Trader and/or Tax Collector titles are moved on- first between them, then to Emur, who hasn't had heat all game.

D'rek finally asks the trillion dollar question that makes her character so boss:

Illusionary Treasury.

Whenever you spend Dinari on a contract or purchase, you may use this ability instead. The payment is considered complete for your side, but the other party does not receive anything.

Can I use Illusionary Treasury on bazaar purchases of items not offered by other players? If I can I am an idiot for not realizing this sooner (I could've bought the Governorship day 1!)

They all seem a bit lost in thread - and the way it's looking, if Nepeth win, they might have your head Tapper with screams of 'overpowered! Off-thread comms AND all can kill!' ;)

So D'riss (5 CS, but 1 being used for comms, so 4) and Korv (1 CS) attack Galain, who dies, as he faces 3 Retainers.
SA attacks Ano, and both have a 1 CS Retainer, so stand-off.
OE has not yet submitted but that is because he has 0 dinari.

Liosan does a Tepmashi's Kiss on D'riss. He will raid 1 Water from the Kiss, raid 1 Water from the Tar-Khan Guard, destroys 1 Water, and lower tomorrow's Water production to 0. As a result, D'riss will lose 2 Retainers (1 Slave Battallion, 1 Golden Infantry) and will be reset to 2 CS, making Liosan the strongest player in the field. He will also die the dawn of day 4 unless he has somehow obtained at the least 1 Water from somewhere to feed himself with.

Omtose raids Emurlahn, who is still protected against raids, so no gains there.

Anomandaris wishes to raid dead Galain. He also hasn't ever used Shemakh's Battle Cry, which is a gamble, but still, better than nothing.

Overall conclusions:
It seems the Nepeth war-engine will slow down now (although Korv will get at the least 1 kill tomorrow, too, as she knows her entire team and her 2 vs 1 ability will take care of most), and if town plays their cards right, they should be able to take out the Nepeth.

Well, it was unfortunate that OE wasn't around yesterday to submit an attack, and really, SA should have attacked then as well. But there have been a few... odd plays too. One trick with the limited resource/dinari production the Nepeth have, is that you have to sell (if need be to the bazaar) to fuel your basic actions.

They haven't done so, none of them (apart from Tats, who was loaded anyway). For D'riss to spend resources on the additional Retainer, for example, cost him 1000 a day on a guaranteed Water sale, plus he could have offloaded weapons (3k) and slaves (1k).

They also had massive luck with Korv identifying SA.
Also, they haven't been raided once so far, so they can't complain of bad luck.

I think so far, a lot of players haven't realized the true potential of their roles that I saw when I designed this particular game. Sure, I have complete knowledge, but even so... not that sure.

Some also forget to play the minimum amount of mafia to keep the game going ;)

Lyca is playing a good game, and her and ansible are setting up a very informative chat:

D, on 04 January 2012 - 11:19 PM, said:

Hey Lyca it's Ansible. I do know who is on our team. Besides us, it's -

Olar Ethil is General Keshket the Stalwart
Sukul is General-Necromancer Toliptot

I have a.decent army.right now, 2 GI and I'm using a Slave Battalion to talk to you. I'm not.sure if it's wise for me.to attack again tonight. Or attack anyway and we can coordinate using Link Forces to communicate. Do you have Link Forces as an ability? I'll be back in a couple.hours but my PM implies I'm the center.general so more.info you can give me the more I can work.with. I don't know if we four are the only Nepeth but we are all generals.

D, on 05 January 2012 - 05:53 AM, said:

Ok, no longer on my phone finally.

So what's the deal? I decided to be pretty up front with you about my role and knowledge because I'm getting the feeling that we are the only Nepeth in the game. If we play well we can end this in two days. Galain and Omtose are totally lynchable, and maybe even Ano too. Have you used your abilities at all or crafted anything? Any Bazaar action going down from your end? I know we don't have a lot of time so I feel it's best to exchange info so maybe we can reconnect with the others tomorrow and get a plan set to win this game.

D, on 05 January 2012 - 05:53 AM, said:

Oh, and by "we", I mean us four Nepeth General. Did you make an attack last night?

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 06:25 AM, said:

I attacked last night.
I have an ability where I can target two players at the same night. If they are against me they join their forces, of one of them is on our side he joins his forces with mine. Yesterday I picked Telas and Sukul (SA because I thought he might be on our side)

I can also find out who many retainers a player has during day. And during dawn I can attack take 2000 dinari from one player and all at the cost of 1000 denari.

I only have a slave battalion and 2000 dinari left.

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 06:30 AM, said:

I don't have any Bazaar actions going. I neither have the money nor any goods I could sell.

I think the sooner we end this the better, as it prevents people from upgrading.

Very much correct.

HP would be a good target for battle today, me thinks.

D, on 05 January 2012 - 07:41 AM, said:

I've got no money for the bazaar either. My two Golden Infantries are apparently godlike. In my PM I got the impression I have the strongest army in the game, or at least I used to. I'll still only be able to use those two and not the Slave Battalion I'm using to talk to you.

I wonder if P-S can clarify this for us. Whether or not Suku actually submitted an attack shouldn't make a difference, but say you choose me and another player with your attack ability, we would demolish probably anyone. However, does that still allow me to attack a target during that phase? Or is my action canceled, or vice versa? Or do they all just happen in the order they were submitted? So assuming I survived the combined attack with Korv, I could still attack another player?

I just wonder because I killed Eloth last night and now with your action that accounts for all kills so far. So, what did Suku do? Did he not attack because his title is like "necromancer", making me think he has some magical or healing or necromantic abilities?

I'm betting Olar Ethil let time run out and didn't do anything cause he's been mostly absent.

So do you have enough Denarii for your attack ability? If so, tonight may be the time to use it again...we need some P-S clarification before doing anything. But you could use your stealing ability to make 1k Denari, then find out how many retainers someone has, and hopefully still have enough Denari left over to use your attack ability and include me.

If all goes to plan, I could make a link with Suku tomorrow and give her these details as well, find out what she can do, I think my Infantry are probably ok and using the Slave Battalion as a communicator seems quite useful. We could then rely on the outcome of your find - if the dude has a lot of retainers, we can either team up to try to take him down, or choose another randomly. If you find one with no retainers, maybe you can signal to me who that is somehow because I will be able to demolish them as long as my attack goes through.

Oh also, if we suspect someone has lots of cash and we need some, one of my abilities attacks unless the target has 5K Denari or more. If he does I steal it, no attack. If not, normal battle.

Let me know what you think. Hopefully no one speed lynches for the next six or seven hours because I'm out to bed.

yup, and they are on the same wavelength (see KorvaLyca's reply):

Crosspost. Yeah I kind of wanted to do this yesterday. At first I thought Galain but he's too lynchable. I'll put in a provisional for HP but let me know what you think about all that stuff ( that we would obviously have to do tomorrow, i.e., after the next night cycle)....

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 07:50 AM, said:

I'm out to work, so I'm not around as well.

You fight your own battles as well as getting dragged into mine. They all happen in the order they where submitted. Here is PS's example

Path-Shaper, on 03 January 2012 - 10:23 AM, said:

They fight two different battles - one with you against your other target, one with his own target.

The battle to be resolved first is the one submitted first to me.

So, for example:

Nepeth player A attacks B, who is also a Nepeth
you select Nepeth player A into your battle against player Z.
B attacks player Y.

Then first A attacks B, if A wins/survives that battle (there may be a tie, or he may lose only one or more Retainers if he loses), he joins you with his remaining retainers against player Z.

Then B (if still alive) attacks Y with his remaining Retainers.

No idea about Sukul. I guess Olar got replaced and wasn't on until after the battle. I have 2k left, so I have enough many to take two actions. But I would prefer them to be all Battle, because if I fail in stealing I would have wasted 1k and had only 1k left.

I think you should go for HP then, as either he or galain are the most likely to have purchased that title.

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 07:53 AM, said:

I'm out, I think we should have enough time to discuss things further once you get up again and I'm back.

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 05:56 PM, said:

I have put provisionals on you and Galain, meaning that you'll join me in a battle against him.

I hope to be back before the lynch, but I'm out with friends.

D, on 05 January 2012 - 06:46 PM, said:

Ok, I think that should go well. I am guessing that I should be pretty dominant in combat so as long as other actions don't interfere we'll be good. Tomorrow I'm going to switch talking to Suku so that she knows what's up. Olar will have to figure it out I suppose. But yeah, winning tonight would be pretty great.

If you do a find tomorrow on a person who has 0-1 retainers, maybe you can signal me and make a comment like "<this player> is totally worthless" or something similarly innocuous. Don't make it too obvious but if we fuck it up I think we'll be ok anyway. That way we can take down an easy target.

Korvalain, on 05 January 2012 - 08:13 PM, said:

My find cost as much as my battles, so I think I should rather go with a battle action than spend the last of my money on find.

Did you lost money because of that tax minister title or is someone of the others richer?

I'm curisous to see who they ultimately vote to lynch. Most of the candiates that they are talking about look to be town so unless we have another wild switch like last game onto Shin I think the game will be over. 8 players 4 Nepath and 4 everyone else. With town losing one to lynch and then one to a batle and with JA still regenerating and not able to vote yet I think you have to call it.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

D'rek deducting:

Hood, on 03 January 2012 - 08:23 PM, said:

So I was originally going to use the sheep I bought with my existing sheep and a slave to make another caravan so I'd at least have an extra retainer to die for me in battle while the other caravan goes and trades every turn. But I reconsidered because given that battles can be lost by the aggressor, I think the warrior/general players will only do battle with 2 or more retainers and in that case I'll die anyways. I'm better off going for what I can use economically, and since I can't do the same action twice in a day, the extra caravan doesn't help me at all.

So instead, I will turn a water into a slave and try to get me an Upgrade. Now I presume the cost of an upgrade has some impact on what it does, so looking at my upgrades:

Upgrade 1. Home upgrade. 4 Sandstone, 2 Metal, 4 livestock, 3 Magic.
Upgrade 2. Home upgrade. 2 Sandstone, 2 Magic
Upgrade A. New ability. 3 Slaves, 2 Livestock, 1 Sandstone, 1 Jewelry
Upgrade B. New ability. 3 Magic, 2 Livestock, 2 Slaves
Upgrade C. upgrade of ability. 2 Weapons, 2 Magic

Upgrade 1 takes A LOT of resources, many of which I don't have: 4 sandstone and 4 livestock. This is probably something really good but I don't want to risk taking so long to get it when I can get something sooner. Sandstone, metal, livestock and magic makes me think it could be a new workshop formula, maybe even for a new type of retainer.

Upgrade 2 seems pretty basic, just some sandstone (which is probably standard for home upgrade) and a bit of magic. This is probably just an add-on to my routine resource production, like +1 more Magic or or something like that.

Upgrade A isn't quite as expensive of Upgrade 1 but is entirely resources I don't produce. Again it is probably something great but I don't want to wait the time it would take me to get it. The combination of slaves, livestock and jewelry makes me think this is could be an ability that boosts my caravans.

Upgrade B looks pretty promising, 2 livestock and 2 slaves is hard to get since I don't produce them but easy enough to get with my starting pile, a bit of money and Trade and the 3 Magic is easy enough to accumulate myself, though I'll try and get it faster with my contract plan instead. 3 magic makes it sound like a magical ability and that seems promising.

Upgrade C has weapons and magic, I'm guessing it upgrades my Illusionary Guards to be more potent, like perhaps making their increased CS count for the battle, not just for checking whether it happens or not. This sounds nice but I don't think it will make much difference since the generals will attack me with a lot more.

So with that in mind I am going for getting Upgrade B as fast as possible. I'll have the livestock and slaves by this Dusk and then I hope I can snag more magic from someone tomorrow and upgrade then. If not I'll consider buying 1 Magic or waiting until day 3 to get it.

And doing my best to play the mafia part in such a way that I don't die along the way, of course!

Hood, on 03 January 2012 - 08:42 PM, said:

I've got a paper-note-system for what resources I have/will have and what I plan to do with them now that seems to be legible and workable and will probably be good for another few days, so now I can get into some real speculation!

Quote

The Bazaar has the following goods for sale:

Sandstone: 4000 dinari.
Water: 4000 dinari.
Metal: 4000 dinari.
Livestock: 4000 dinari.
Slaves: 4000 dinari.
Weapons: 9000 dinari
Livestock (1): 2000 dinari
Artefact (1): 10000 dinari
Weapons (2): 8000 dinari
Weapons (1): 5000 dinari
Magic (2): 8000 dinari

People have weapons for sale and are eager to undercut the default bazaar price and each other. If I combine my metal into weapons I'll just be joining their attempts to under-bid each other, which will soon reach the point of you might as well just sell to the bazaar. At the same time, no one is offering Metal. Furthermore, there's a contract out for armor. Well Metal seems like a good component for making armor. So instead of making Weapons and selling them, I think tomorrow I will offer Metal at 3k din. Whether the person who wants armor can make it themself or not, whoever can make armor will hopefully think there's a hefty profit in it for them and buy my Metal.

Very nice that the resource I make and can't use for much might just be quite in demand!

ooookay cool so no character improvements for me, huh. I must be so dainty, I have very little leadership potential, only a an inkling of magic, no combat ability and now it seems I am too lazy to ever bother improving those things, even in a war-torn desert city. I must be some sort of tactical genius and economic mastermind to be heir to the House, then!

Or you have people to do all that stuff for you while you're doing your genius stuff ;)

Yeah... working on that...

We'll see how much money I can get tomorrow, perhaps I will buy a mercenary just to have that 1 combat strength. But that won't help me with assassinations and I won't win any battles with 1 CS, so maybe I'd just be better off getting more Caravans or peasant levies just to have the number of retainers up.

Hood, on 04 January 2012 - 04:26 PM, said:

So....

I'm broke.

My resources got raided meaning I have no chance of upgrading my place today or even tomorrow.

All my character abilities require magic (but no, I'm not a mage that would be silly) and I don't have enough for the useful one of buying things for cheap. No point in getting Illusionary Guards that will not save me from anything.

My Trader ability might be worth using at Dusk if there is any resource worth getting. There probably isn't. I could swap a slave or livestock to Magic to have 2 MP but I wouldn't have the money to use either magic ability anyways.

I guess there's nothing for it but to send out a caravan and get 2k dinari, not that there's much to do with it. Then it's just sit and wait until tomorrow, still hoping I don't die (or get raided again).

matters where it comes from :)

Ah I see, I am the only one smart enough to use camels in the desert. Idiots in the free market make their caravans out of zebras.

Zebras have a consumption of 4, ostrich's have a consumption of 2. But yes you are correct in your reasoning.

Since this is becoming part of the discussion (and since I have adressed this in a few PMs already, thus perhaps creating a situation where a few knew more than the remainder despite it being a general issue):

There is little guarantee that you'll get the same character in the next game that character appears in.

A lucky few might, especially if they did well and expressed they liked the character. But since this is going to be a series of games, I don't want meta entering it anymore than necessary.

If you automatically got the same character again, meta suddenly not just has a use to identify players and playstyles but it will also gain the additional benefit of identifying potential power players because their characters have returned (and by scrolling through previous SHs, you can easily read up on who had a few upgrades/ titles to their name).

Not to mention that players with new characters might automatically be relegated to playing newer, less advanced/powerful characters.

So yes, you might get your character back. If you like the one you gained, then by all means, play with the care that they might be yours again. I think that's truly awesome.

But no, you can't predict you will get that role again.

Wait, so all our role and activities and PM information is being posted in SH for everyone?

I thought it would all be kept secret so that we would be able to continue with our chars next game (and maybe only who activated what actions/markets would be revealed but nothing of the actual abilities' restrictions/mechanics), hence the bit in the sign-up thread about how you can keep track of workshop recipes (from your previous characters) to get a couple extra ones but Tapper wouldn't make a global listing of them after the game.

That was my intention, but it has proven to be near impossible to keep track of things for me as a mod utilizing just P-S's inbox as a notebook and reference guide.

It might have been doable if I had either taken the time off required to run this game, or had prepared a very extensive excel that I'd mail from home and work when leaving the one for the other. As it stands, with the prep I put into it (which was already quite extensive), it proved impossible - I started out with an empty SH and only filled it yesterday with the last roles.

the one thing I will do per character is removing the unbought upgrades and replace them with new ones (as well as perhaps adressing home/ dinari production per role), so each character has 5 new tricks up their sleeves plus the ones they bought this game. Alternatively, I may delete the character roles from SH, but anyone copy/pasting them would have saved them. Other than having locked down SH for everyone who played, little else is possible... in game related off-thread comms, people can also share role PMs, after all.

It is really a compromise between utility, and i'm willing to look into new options to maintain some secrecy, but the first bit of the dynasty system proved a real impracticality.

correction italics. - T.

Stick with whatever you are doing for this game, but for future games I think you should consider going secretive. If you need a forum for notes, use the Game Development forum, that`s what it is there for! I had up to a dozen threads of notes and tracking going on in there while I was doing Rot3K. Just ask Hetan or someone other than Silencer to change the password of it for you. Shin doesn`t need it and no one else is running any complex series so you should be able to leave all your threads in there between ToD games.

Ah, I was under the impression one of the two of you might be using it, also for future projects... don't know when/if you're going to run another series of games or a few complex ones or just going to sit back and relax play mafia for a while.

With that secret base to work from, I`m sure you`ll be able to figure out some information you feel like giving away in SH each game that doesn't compromise roles or make the game too meta-infused. And regardless of how much precautions you take in that department, players will probably take steps on the bigger games to hide themselves just in case (and if they aren't they should! It's fun and a bit of a return to the olden days!).

Agree on that :)

Lastly, I really don't want to see ToD become "characters are affected by events but players are interchangeable" because Shin is already doing that with his Sengoku series! You have to be different!

It is the easiest solution - and allows me the most freedom :D
As I said, not the intention ( I like difficult!) but after this game (and 0.66) I know what I require to run the market/ smooth the system out as well as the amount of mod-work (haven't been this stressed since Spycraft 2, really, and this game has 10 players less).

And also maybe, just maybe, because I wasn't able to play a continuous character in Rot3K....

I'll see what I can do :p

I don't have any plans for a new series at the moment and only a couple vague ideas of new games. As you say, mostly just going to enjoy playing for a little while, especially with both you and Shin running series - I don't usually have the time to play every game but by not modding I should have time to play at least all of you two's games.

Whoever said the easiest solution was the best one? :p And yes it gives you the most freedom, but since you are making up your stories you can find excuses for the surviving characters to be involved in whatever the plot of the next game is. There will probably never be more than a handful of survivors from each game and most of them have ample reason to move around to whatever new location you want the next game to be in (if it changes at all) - traders go on trading expeditions, beggars, orphans and mercenaries go looking for better fortune, the khans and armies seek to expand or are training, priests spread their holy messages, mages and scholars seek out arcane secrets from exotic places......

It could work.

As for stress, not much help I can be there. I think what you said of having a giant excel sheet with time going down row by row, each row being a market transanction or event or whatnot, and with several columns for each character for their stats, money, resources, etc and you just work your way down as the game goes on, updating cells where they are changed, could work pretty good for preserving your sanity. Also treat yourself to a spa day afterwards!

That spa day is in the planning.

Illusionary Treasury.
Phase: any. Cost: 1000 dinari, 2 Magic.

Yes ;)

See? Me -> idiot. This changes everything!

Honestly very little would have changed from what I have done so far in the game had I realized this right away because so far I have never had the 2 Magic needed to cast Illusionary Treasury and I probably would have not bought any Magic day 1, knowing it would take until Dusk to get it and therefore figuring I'll just produce my own instead. Maybe I wouldn't have bought that Livestock. Not sure if I would've still bought the Water Clock or not.

Anyways, Mercenary Sahir I will BUY YOU WITH MAGIC (tomorrow) :glee:

I'm curisous to see who they ultimately vote to lynch. Most of the candiates that they are talking about look to be town so unless we have another wild switch like last game onto Shin I think the game will be over. 8 players 4 Nepath and 4 everyone else. With town losing one to lynch and then one to a batle and with JA still regenerating and not able to vote yet I think you have to call it.

If they don't lynch, they're in trouble, though. Just 1 kill tonight, and if there is no lynch, they are pretty much handicapped. The key to town fortunes is Shin surviving, essentially.

But I thought the game was over when the Nepath reach vote parity? If there is a lynch of a town player it's game over. If there is no lynch then town still has a shot. A small one but a shot nonetheless.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

Come on people listen to D'rek. She's right. Town will definately have a chance now if they can lynch Lyca. That will stop the night kill right? Oh no. Battles happen before a lynch resolution doesn't it? Well that still is good news for town as a Nepath player goes down.
I don't know what I'm doing but it sounds good.

Yeah. I miscalculated ;)
It would be an end I'd be happy with, personally. The Nepeth would have pulled it off just in time, a few key personalities of each faction survive, and I get a decent sniff of what to tweak.

This is funny, funny stuff.

 Hood, on 05 January 2012 - 09:21 PM, said:

There"s been giant quote blocks aplenty already so I won"t feel the need to add to that but here"s my thoughts after reading up:

galain worries me in making a case on Omtose coasting and directly pointing out my calling him out in it - gets my hackles up thinking it could be a ploy to keep him on my good side since I"m the next most active player and bound to be getting more and more suspicious of him if we don"t find Nepeth

sukul gets really whingy and defensive when suspicion is cast on him. That is not the kind of behaviour that goes with an attitude of helping town because it mostly doesn"t help town. It is distracting as hell and tends to wind up with the whingy person being lynched and if said person is town that is bad for town. This is why in Albania whingy mafia players are ritually flogged with a rope made of venomous spiders if they turn out to be town after being lynched. So if you are town Sukul then you are doing one of the worst things you can by whinging yourself into getting lynched AND THERE WILL BE SPIDER FLOGGING TO PAY FOR IT

omtose is still completely devoid of original content or even content at all for that matter. I DON"T FUCKING CARE IF YOU ATTEND A UNIVERSITY I AM PERFECTLY PROUD OF MY DEVRY INSTITUTE DEGREE NOW POST SOMETHING USEFUL OR SHUT THE FUCK UP SO I CAN HAMMER YOU FOR LOW POSTING. I think I actually prefer D'riss deliberately low posting to Gwynn-like levels of three posts a day, spread so far apart they"re like floating rocks in an ocean. At least I can plain ol" call D"riss a major low-poster and lynching him for it is pretty explicable. Omtose on the other hand will be damned sure to show up 5 minutes after you propose to lynch his low-content ass and do a miniature-whinge before "I GOTTA GO TO CLASS NOW FOR MY DEGREE THAT I AM LEARNING BY GOING TO THIS CLASS THERE BACK AFTER CLASS". What"s that? They make miniature spiders for miniature whingers? MINIATURE SPIDER FLOGGING AWAITS YOU OMTOSE!

So basically I hate everyone and want to lynch nigh everyone except Ano because he is just way too good at being both useful and completely outside my posting time. But I am going to leave my vote on Korvalain for now because as soon as I put it there and made a little case on him he disappeared for life hoping to sit out the day and that is rather scummy. Quite.

Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

That deserves much rep, aye.

Also funny how no-one considered this might be d-day.
On the other hand, they have 2 Nepeth right there with 2 votes on them.... which probably means they will lynch Omtose.
