Their leader is the current Archon so they have risen to prominence. They also recruit from captured or dissatisfied (or driven crazy) Imperials to keep their numbers up.

That's totally fair. It's a long series after all.

Finished Eisenhorn Xenos and just started Malleus. It was far more "epic" in its scope than I had anticipated when I started reading it. The massive jump in time between the two books is also an interesting way to highlight the wastness of the 40k universe. I found that the 40k games such as Inquisitor: Martyr really helped with the imagery. Happy I found it but I think I'm even happier I read it after experiencing a bit more of the universe than just the Dawn of war games.

Yes the Eisenhorn trilogy is really awesome. It also does a nice job of showing normal life in the Imperium, stuff away from the apocalyptic battlefields.

Just avoid GG stuff and you're good. The Horus Heresy was backstory fluff that caused modern day 40k. It was around 2000 something that GW decided to flesh it out.

The Horus Heresy stuff takes place 10,000 years before the Gaunt's Ghosts books. You could spend all the time you want in the Horus stuff without affecting "present day" WH40K reads, but the opposite may not be true.

The broad strokes of the Horus Heresy has been known for a very long time. There's a seduction by chaos, a revolt amongst the empire, the half death of the emperor, and the rendering of the universe into eternal war setting where people bash mini figurines into each other for fun. The devil as always is in the details - not quite literally here.

Finished Eisenhorn: Heretic the other day and boy did I enjoy the ride. Going to hunt down a copy of ravenor (tablet turned out to not be my thing) and then give the first GG a try. Enjoying the human aspect of 40k way more than the space marine or primarch aspect.

Speaking of Gaunt, does anyone know when the non-special edition of Abnett's latest, THE VINCULA INSURGENCY: A GHOSTS DOSSIER is coming out? I realize it's a prequel-interquel that takes place early on, but still it's exciting.

Earliest is probably six months after the special edition came out. But BL are a bit chaotic since covid started.
