tell me....what use is a "record" company when no one is buying records anymore?
if an artist makes a good noise, there is nothing stoping them from selling their 'wares' to the public.

The guy is exuberant and while there is matter for calling part of this near conspiracy theory, he's come up with excellent points that need to be addressed.

Go daddy has reversed its decision to support SOPA after reddit and a whole host of others boycotted it. From what I gather it helped draft the act in the 1st place. For a hosting company this is ludicrous. Never liked go daddy, it's always been a bit of a bully boy.

So Wikipedia is going to shut down for 24 hours to protest against SOPA and PIPA.
Other sites are going to follow suit, like Mozilla, Reddit and - for some of us more importantly - Icanhascheezburger.com.
As support is already waning, with SOPA apparently dead altogether, actions like these will hopefully, hopefully garner enough attention to put an end to this lunacy.
So... thoughts? Predictions?

I read today that the White House is going to oppose it. Good news.

in a bit of brighter news: Canada is looking into revising its ownCopyright Act , supposedly offering MORE protections for users.
I haven't had a chance to look at the draft yet, but one thing i've heard mentioned was that it will make an exception for copyright material being used on sites like youtube (so that you would be able to include a copyrighted song in your wedding album, and it would be considered "fair use").
moves like these fill me with hope when I look at the madness of SOPA.

That would be brilliant! I love it when a government thinks of ways to improve legislation that don't involve *increasing* restrictions on the population.
Now if only NZ can learn from this example, and from the response to SOPA/PIPA.

It sounds like the Canadians actually have a bit of common sense.

well, our Supreme Court did (as I mentioned a while back) make a ruling that content host should not be responsible for filtering uploaded content--which is pretty much the opposite of what SOPA's all about. So we already have a SCC decison that says "we don't believe that everyone-is-a-pirate-untill-we-scanned-them-to-make-sure-they-are-not"
