seemed to be the closest thing to a consensus there was...just trying to move things along based on the conversation and prevailing attitudes.

Lol, I misread and thought you'd said Queen to C5, which prompted by disbelieving reaction above. Queen to B5 is far more sensible :harhar:

Knight to C5: check

Yeah, that's got to be the best place for it.

And my response: that bishop is toast!

Your response clearly has to be to take the knight in return, as if you don't, its next move will fork your king and queen. I've actually already played it on the board, but I'll wait for official confirmation before posting my response :harhar:

Although I suppose you could take the other knight with your Queen. But then you'd lose a rook and bishop for two knights, which is scarcely an even trade

true, but if ...Q:e2, N:d8 R:d8 we threaten ...Rd2!, which can cause you no end of trouble.

I don't think we've got time though :harhar:. In the line you're suggesting, White can get Rf7 in and all that pressure is wasted. I think we have to take the knight and see what happens after 23.Rf7 Rd7 (or perhaps 23...Qb6 is better. Hmm...)

Rf7 is not a thret, however, since the knight defends f8. so

... Q:e2 N:d8 R:d8 R:f7 Rd2 Rf8 N:f8 Q:f8+ Kb7

and I don't think White has enough here to win.

edit: wait a min, you mean Q:a7. crap, missed that.

If we play a6 to counteract Rf7, White can also just play Qc5, which gives us the same problem.

And, as threatened, I play Rf7. So what are your options? You've clearly got to protect the a7 pawn, and you've thrown around a few different options. a6 was the most passive of those, IMO, as it is pretty entirely defensive. Qb6 is quite nice, giving your kings lots of protection, negating the potential attack of Nd4 or Nc3, and attacking my weak e3 pawn, protected only by the Queen. Rd7 was mentioned as an option. I think that's pretty strong, actually. My response would likely be Rf6, and you could then play Qxe2. Lots of danger for me in that line. I might choose instead to exchange rooks.

Anyway, the current board state is:

after a cursory glance (won't be anything more today--I'm tired and I just got home form work), Qb6 seems the best option. I firmly believe that the key to unraveling white's defence is pressure on e3 with multiple pieces, and playing qb6 gives us the most options to do that in the future.

although exchangin rooks can easily have its merits, since its just about the only active piece White has.

Isn't there another Mafia game happening at the moment?

Besides, it's the collective's move. I don't mind waiting.

I think it's purdy obvious we're toast.

we don't have the firepower to win really, unless UoW fucks up really badly, and he's too good for that.

I'd be in for submitting and starting anew.

besides, ST is dead in mafia. has been for a week now.
I can't move, since I played last.
that being said, our position is not hopeless... yet.

Actually, that raises a good point: what should the rule about the collective resigning be? I can't imagine those who'd prefer to carry on would be happy if the rule were that the single player accepted the very first statement of resigning. But at the same time, there should be some way to resign if the majority wish it, or at least those with the most interest in the game.

I propose: the collective may resign if three successive posters playing on their behalf post an instruction to resign following the standard move protocol, without being interrupted by a poster saying that resigning should not be the next move.

Whaddya reckon?
