And, rather than trying some desperate gambit (like, e.g. Rxf7, I duly retreat. Qa3

My initial thought is that Qb6 looks good, trying to put some pressure on the e3 pawn. I prefer it to Qc7, after which Nb5 looks annoying with the threat on a7 (I think we'd end up playing Qb6 anyway in that line...).

Qb6 seems the best option right now. although I think after Na4, we'll end up on c6, anyhow.

I think we pretty much have to move the queen then hey?

C6 is probably the best option to keep her in play although A6 gives the opportunity to strike at his king side.

Qa6 is VERY BAD.
it'll get us forked and lose the queen.

i'm considering Qb5, though.
if Ne-c3, we can play Qd3... wait, that's also a deadly fork, nvm.
yeah, my initial assessment, of that our queen will end up on c6 seems to have been the most correct one.

I don't mind d6, myself. Yes, it is a standing invitation for a queen-exchange. But with the way our king is exposed, an exchange may actually be a good thing... our King has a lot of maneuverability against his knight, after all, and if UoW wants to bring his rooks into an offensive position, we get some breathing space while he moves them.

As for b5.... White's Ne2-c3 would bring up his strength for an offensive against our king, and may be the more dangerous move compared to Na4-c3, which is harrassment of the queen and protects against Qe2, but we'd have a dignified retreat to d7 from there, which gives a lot of pushing power with the queen central and a rook on the same column.

I like Tapper's assessment of D6. It does look like a decent move actually and it seems the queen exchange wouldn't be entirely in his favour, considering all his other pieces except that one knight are a couple moves away from an effective strike of any kind.

hrrm

white has significantly more material.
if we exchange queens, I'd imagine white would then play Rd1, prompting a rook exchange as well.

the only real drawback to white's position is the fact that its bishop is a glorified pawn.

that being said, I can't see an effective plan for us once more pieces are gone. looking at our pawn strcture, I shudder to think of endgame.

I don't think trading off Qd6 is a good idea. What about if White plays 21.Rd1 instead of taking? Suddenly the Queen is under threat, and if we play Qxa3 then we open the b-file. I think it's better to play Qb5 and keep the queen away from the the open files where it can be targetted by the White rooks.

EDIT: Qa5 could be better actually. White can't then play Nec3 with tempo.

Q a5 seems somewhat counterproductive. We just came from there.
I'd suggest Qc6, with ideas like Qc2 and Rd3 in the future.

In the interest of making the endgame more interesting, and my life more difficult, I will point out that Qa5 would also lead to a Queen exchange if followed by Nc5+, and would leave your king stranded in the middle of the a file, while also forcing a bishop/knight trade. Is that what you want? (Clearly, you would have to protect your Queen, and as the king would be in check, you would have to play Kb6 as any other option would lose the Queen for nothing.)

Jeesh, I'm really not thinking well at the moment.

@Ment: If Qc6, then Rac1 is a pretty strong response. It's a natural move for White to play anyway, but this way we're forced to move away. Qb5 has a similar problem, but it's the Knight that is being moved across, not the Rook, and of the two I find the Knight less threatening in this position. Once the knight has moved to c3, then c4 and c6 become good squares for the Queen to escape attack. But without the knight there, she'll just be chased away.
