DF, the normal abbreviation for Knights is 'N', not 'K' -- 'K' is the king.

Anyhoo, I'll follow up your 1. ... Nc6 with 2. Nc3.

I like the English as it allows swift development of knights but also prevents the pawn on c2 being trapped by a knight on c3.

Incidentally, apparently if you now play Nf6 we reach an opening position called the "Black Knights' Tango" :ice:

Last move for me for tonight. My current thinking is that as you've focused on the flanks, I'm going to try and establish a strong centre presence. The English opening 1. c4 is flexible enough to let me do this, especially as you didn't respond with 1. ... e5 which would have given you an immediate centre presence. So my next move is e3, which is clearly preparatory to d4. I'm also partway through a fianchetto with the f bishop to g2 -- unlikely to advance it to h3, as your pawn could advance and threaten. My e3 also frees my queen's diagonals (oo-er).

I am surprised we didn't play 2...e5

in our current position we can't really defend against d4, so I think b6 is a sound move for us. if UoW responds with d4, we'll effectively cede the centre and confine ourselves to a flank game (with the idea of 0-0-0 and a pawn push on kingside.

alternatively, we can play e5 now,a nd if he pushes d4, we exchange pawns leading to a sharp open game with a bare e file and 2 centered kings.

so, which way do wanna take this game?

was NG8 F6 a bad move?

should early dominance of the centre always be the priority, or just usually ?

is the bare file and 2 centered kings, wose for us than UoW ?

i am keen to pick up on any tactical basics as my 6 year old grandson is starting to learn

the knight wasn't a bad move. it's a standard development move. I do question the wisdom of g5, though

dominating the centre is usually the priority. depends on the player. my latest coach has told me that it's the focus of Western chess theory. Soviet school (to which I originally belonged) doesn't place as much value on the centre, if there's an opportunity of a strong flanking attack. so it's all relative, really. in this particular case, though, yielding the centre would severely constrain our efforts at development.
as for the bare file.... it depends on who'll have the opportunity to exploit it. if we play e5, UoW responds by d4, and then we initiate the exchange, we will have the tempo to play Qe7+ However, since UoW has a number of interposing options, this could prove a danger to us with little actual gain, esp if he follows by 0-0 and Re1, giving him a chance to pin our queen.

Yep, I definitely posted an updated board, and my move in response was my prophesied pawn move d4.

Ng6 seems like the best way to get out of this...opening's not going very well for us here. We need to at least move one of the d or e pawns (d6 is probably better than e6 at this point, since we might as well put the bishop on g7), or white can just rampage through the centre and crush us.

So Ng6.

The white bishop looks around slyly, and slips up behind the pawn on g3, who looks nervously behind him.

Well, if I were part of the collective (resistance is futile), I'd be thinking about a Caro-Kann type pawn push on the Queenside to start addressing your centre deficiencies. Say, c6 followed at some point by d5 -- you'd have both knight and Queen support for the pawn on d5, and it would become a pivotal square for control of the centre, while simultaneously closing up the game and making your knights potentially more effective.

c6 is usually a good call in the lines of the English where White fianchettos like this - the bishop can be very annoying for Black unless he takes precautions, and this is the safest. However, usually Black already has some development towards the centre...here, not so much. If I were White d5 would look awfully tempting right now. Would have preferred ...d6 myself, because then playing d5 would actually be a hindrance for white (blocks the long diagonal for the bishop. I also think we'd have more luck attacking the centre with ...e5 than we would with ...d5 - white isn't as well positioned for that pawn thrust. Ah well, too late now.
