I like UoW's move with the queen, also finally doing something with our knights

Depending on what J2 does, how bout moving the pawn so we can get our white bishop in on the action? Do you think it's even necessary? He's just kinda in the way atm.

Yeah, I'd like to have a semi-fianchetto position on the kingside so we can castle away from that Queen-bishop diagonal. If j2 doesn't castle next, a useful move might be Bh6, which would be very threatening given that the pawn on f6 has no protection. Or we have the option of Qc4+ (if he castles on the next move -- or even if he doesn't , preventing him)

I think we should be aiming to post up the knight on the d6 square. It'll be very strong there, especially with the pawn still on d7. It is currently threatening to check the Black king, keeping it in the centre of the board in the process. Plus, it opens up ideas like a subsequent Nc4 to boot the queen out of there (which could bag us the bishop on b4 in the process), or an invasion on f7 (Qc4-f7, anyone?)

That plan works well with getting e4-e5 in, which incidentally I like even by itself because it forces black to move the f6 pawn, opening the long diagonal. An f5-g6-h7 pawn chain doesn't synergize well with the rest of Black's development - he hasn't put a bishop on g7 (leaving a hole on h6), and it blocks the knight on e7 from accessing the kingside. If he exchanges instead, then we'll have the Queen bearing down on h8, simultaneously threatening the rook and making castling kingside a nightmare to properly defend (we can play Bh6 at our leisure).

The queen is strong on c4 - as UoW an immediate Qc4 has to be a candidate move here. Among other things, it opens up the possibility of an alternative development strategy for the white squared bishop - putting it on d3 or e2. Depending on what ends up happening with Black's kingside pawn structure, this might be a better bet than the fianchetto. j2 would have to be extremely brave to try to castle queenside here, and if he goes kingside then a bishop on g2 is much less useful. Having said that, a Bishop on d3 isn't going to be much use against an f5-g6-h7 pawn chain.

There's also the possibility of playing the h-pawn hack with h4-h5, but that's probably best saved until after the black king has been castled to that side.

Of course, all this is dependent on j2's next move, which could change things a bit, but in summary were it our move here I'd say we should consider Nd6 and Qc4 as the main possibilities, with e5 as a 3rd choice.

Don't look now, but I think there's something weird attached to the bottom of my posts.

Um, why? You lose our knight to his queen for nothing in return?

Now think hard... what do we do after that Queen moves away?

Hint - it involves a pawn.

Yes, we take the bishop, leaving us with doubled pawns and a wide-open Queenside, losing our very threatening knight dual-attack and allowing his Queen to escape from that cramped position where she was doing no harm at all. Really poor move, IMO.

How bout knight to b5 instead...but I guess we should take advantage of the opening on the bishop and clean up the mess later right?

Yes forcing his queen back, opening up our rook for movement, threating his knight, and clearing up the only threat he was close to having on us is a poor move. Stop being afraid to use your pieces, and trade pieces with the other player for both tactical and material advantages.

Beautiful.

And now we are not countering Q, B, K with K, K, B, B, Q, P, P, R.

Edit - His next move is probably K C5 -> B3, if he does it is time for R A3. If he doesn't, now is when we want to get D2 in play over in the H row.

So should we trade our rook for a bishop and a knight, or should we move P B4 -> B5?

I'm willing to trade since that would elimnate all his bishops and judging from the last game, no one except me on our team like to use rooks. If we trade pieces that leaves our queen on A6 and able to move over to F6 depending on his next move.

Rook to A5 now?

If he moves with that bishop we got him again and our rook is in the fight all of a sudden.

Or maybe better to start working on our right side? Right side is certainly more conservative.

Actually, I don't know which is better now. If we just threaten with the rook he might lock on that side and leave us free to work our resources on the right

Hes threatening a Bishop -> Queen trade. Which is why I didn't want the queen there, but anyway.

but we still come out on top of that one right?

neither of us have queenly queens anymore, but we still have 2 bishops, 2 roks and a knight.
