Earthsea not being on there is a travesty. Less surprised but still disappointed to not see LE Modesitt's Recluce series, Orson Scott Card's Alvin Maker series, and the Dark is Rising series by Cooper.

Also, what's with the Steven King's The Stand? Nothing against him, but calling some of his books Scifi/Fantasy seems a stretch when they're clearly horror or "other". Same with Watership Down, Flowers for Algernon, Wicked, and so on; you can give some very flimsy evidence for the genre in them, but their focus is far more tilted toward other things.

Flowers For Algernon totally deserves its place. The book wouldn't exist without it's extremely SF premise, and it is one of the genuine masterpieces of SF, fully deserving it's very own slot on the SF Masterworks series as well as this list.
It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about nowadays saying things against one, behind one's back, that are absolutely and entirely true.

Ehhhhhh....

It's a great classic and all, but Sci-fi? It's got very tenuous threads there; only the procedure for making him smart (temporarily as it turns out) is actually science fiction. The plot though revolves around drama, philosophy, human nature and so on; it's almost like calling Moby Dick Science Fiction/Fantasy because they're hunting a supernatural or at least very abby-normal whale, not to mention the dead-on fortune telling and destiny and such. But really it's an anti-transcendentalist piece that would probably fall under philosophy, action-adventure, or just "fiction".

So it's a lot of things, including science fiction. Same could be said for 1984 and F*451. Being more than one thing shouldn't disqualify stuff from the list, regardless of which library shelf it usually sits on.

My high school teachers BEGGED me to do chemistry but I couldn't do both history and chemistry and went with the one that would be of more use in real life - hence my ancient and modern history achievements :p

Of the Top 100 I've only read 19 of the books mentioned, most of which were in the top 30.

I'm still trying to understand why Watership Down was on the list.......

I'd say Lord of the Rings, while a good read, is probably more something you'd need to read as one of the first series of books you get into. Once you've read a few series such as Malazan Book of The Fallen and such its probably not going to hold you as much as it would of otherwise, thats the way I see it anyway.

Edit: Also, could someone post at least the top 10? the site is blocked from work :p
