best ending... ...you ever played.

so i played right through my 'last' real vacation. On the list of games i played i managed to clock crysis, assasins creed 2, god of war 2 (again), heavenly sword (again and again) then splinter cell conviction and CoD. Now, playing through each game was entertaining enough but i have to say the good endings sold my playthrough while the crap endings left me with a sour taste in my mouth. You know, that mom-was-right-i-just-wasted-15-hours-of- my-life taste? Yeah thats the one.
I hate that feeling, and with my wife around i don't think i can afford it anymore (i've never hated handbags more than i do now. They literally cost me an arm and a leg), so heres me thinking, lets solve that problem here and now.
This thread is hereby dedicated to the games that left you in a sweat with a cig in your mouth and a crazed grin on your face... What games left you feeling as cool as some guy wearing shades, dressed in black walking away while deacon frost explodes? What were your best 3 game endings EVA??!!!

Planescape: Torment. Can't say why without spoiling the story, but anyone who's finished it simply has to agree. Beautiful, tears-in-the-eyes, symbolic ending to a brilliant journey. Please, don't let Bethesda pick it up and make the God of War clone sequel "Planescape: 2rment - Vhailor's Vengeance"...
Fallout. The bittersweet leaving the vault to "Maybe" hit me in the gut, hard. Followed by a slideshow of all the consequences of your decisions, many less than pleasant or cringe-inducing as you reflect on every life you've affected and the ripples your actions caused. Wonderful.
Third is a difficult, difficult pick. Tempted to say Mafia 1: cynical and bitter as hell, but brilliant and understated. Second Sight was a great one, as you realise the true nature of the "flashbacks" you've been having throughout the game, and gives you a final surge of pure hope. Armed with the knowledge the last twist gave me, I threw caution to the wind and stormed the big bad's lair. Never saw it coming.
I'm sure I can think of a few others, they'll come to me at some point. Good endings are pretty important to me, and it's sad seeing the predictable pattern of really shit endgames in video games (not a new trend, either). Guess that's the point where the budget runs dry and the deadline looms close, but it's always disenheartening to go out of a great story on a whimper

Even though I dont play many games, I will have to say that Metal Gear Solid definitely has the best story and a satisfying ending.
No Touchy.

FF9, not really in the same vein. Strictly personal bias.
World In Conflict, again, not in the same vein. Soviets invade the US via Seattle.

Definitely going to second Planescape Torment as a worthy story to play through and conclude.

i've never even heard of planescape before. The reviews rave about it though. Im all over the place trying to find it. Personally i liked FF9 ending 2. Cant really explain why.
You may all disagree but i always enjoy the epicness of heavenly swords final battle. The story of the hero of legend made flesh was obvious but very much fun to play.

Torment's available from here: Linky - I've never used the site before so can't comment anything else about them. Alternatively pick up the disks from Amazon. Definitely one to play.
I'd say Portal ending but not Portal 2.
A third one? Hmm, that's going to be tricky, give me a few weeks to think of one.

GOG.com is brilliant. Advocating a strict non-DRM policy, you can download the game, burn it out on a cd/dvd and share it with all your friends. That, in addition to giving you a library of all your games at their site, from which you can download all your games as many times as you want (same as steam). I LOVE gog.com.

The ending of FFIX is a masterpiece among masterpieces. There's no two ways about that.
But if I had to choose two more, it'd probably be Morrowind and (preemptively, since I don't own it and can't finish it yet myself but it's *ungh* so good) Lost Odyssey.

Lost Odyssey i have yet to finish also.
Mafia ending was very good, and the link in mafia 2 just topped it for me lol
Metal Gears where always good endings.
i must admit i loved FFX myself and a game called Legend of Dragoons

Lol I remember legend of Dragoons. I played an early release Demo and I must admit I wondered where
that story led to.
I felt Metal gear solid: sons of liberty a bit sore to listen to at the end but even for one of their
weaker endings the franchise keeps pulling out some marvelous plot lines. I still cant get my mind around
which snake is the real snake.
Playing Mafia 2 as we speak, I am actually loving it thoroughly. Sadly never got hold of
Mafia 1...surprised no one ranks Mass effect up in the great end sequences. I dislike
the end to most bioware games because its pretty clear their not done telling you the story yet

I didn't count ME myself more to the fact it's the whole game for me that makes it great rather than the ending really. as like you say it ain't finished yet. Ask me once ME3 has been completed lol
Legends of Dragoon was awesome, and the very 1st time i bought it was only because it had dragons in it, imagine how amazed i was to find out it was a truly amazing game.

What are your (or anyone else's) thoughts on Baldur's Gate? I started to play it once, but I'm not sure what happened to it. If I wanted to play both, do I need to do so in a certain order?
To add to the post:
FFVIII - I chose 8 over 7 or 9 because 8 was my first FF game. I think those 3 stories are all great, though. I am still holding my breath for SE to remake at least one of them. Hopefully they'll do so now to recoup some losses they had due to that piece of crap FFXIV they released.
Uh... come to think of it... I don't think I've ever finished any other games besides those. I've played ES: Oblivion and a few other classic games (Zelda, Mario, etc.) but I usually get burnt out about halfway into the game. I'm more of an MMO gamer, I guess.

Baldur's Gate 1 is pretty dull, Baldur's Gate 2 is decent. I'm not a huge fan, personally, but I'm just not really a fan of the real time with pause combat system it uses... and it has a lot of combat. As a complete package, it's hard not to find something to enjoy and I'd recommend anyone to give it a go.
If you mean Baldur's Gate and Planescape, they're on the same engine, but made by different companies and there's no relation story-wise.

These two were close to the top for me, particularly Bloodlines. Classic, hilarious subversion, and the utterly chilling background revelation about the cabbie made it brilliantly creepy.

This..basically every ending from the LOK series, Superbly written and voiced games.
OK to add to the topic these aren't my best 3 because really I can't think of any favorite ones, but these are some of the more recent ones that I found great:
- Red dead redemption
- Assassin's Creed 2
- and of course Half Life 2 Ep:2
some honourable mentions :
-warcraft 3 (Before all the WOW crap) had a pretty damn good campaign on all three factions.
-Shadow of the Colossus's ending is a dark and sad ending which really.
-and a bit old but Lufia 2 and FF3

These are the pale deaths which
Men miscall their lives
All this I cannot bear
To witness any longer
Cannot the kingdom of salvation
Take me home

The original Ninja Gaiden on the NES. My eyes bled, my ears bled, my asshole bled. And a temporary window into the future opened (and closed quickly) when I experienced that ending.
