Ok, I have waited far to long to create this thread, but here it is. Science. Yes we are a literary/fantasy strong site, but I know for a fact that many of you are scientists or closely related to one. So science pride people!!! I have two ideas to run with on this thread:

1) Pretty pictures. Seriously who doesn't like a good bug pic from the Scanning Electron Microscope.

2) Nerd talk. (e.g. again, I must post this awesome geek site (though it is good for computer geeks as well, mind you) www.thinkgeek.com)

And I love protein structures. For those with little science background, these pictures represent a chain of molecules that crumples up to form these shapes, and acts as a miniature machine.

One of my favourite proteins GroEL/ES which is a chaperone molecule.

I also have to admit having a child-like appreciation of Fluorescence proteins (like GFP) and strongly approve of them being used in transgenics to allow mice to glow in the dark. I plan on making a business empire based off of glow in the dark pets.

EDIT: Also, GroEL/ES annoys me because 99% of people just say 'folded proteins come out' because there's no good way to image it inside.

Really? I've never heard anyone say that, seems very inaccurate. Usually proteins have to undergo the process more than once and mis-folding can occur as well, it's a set time that the conformational changes inside the chamber of the protein occur so if the folding is not complete the molecule comes out without being fully or properly folded.

This is a Pyruvate Dehydrogenase (PDH) complex which clusters together into groups of 3-12 (I think this is 6).

PDH is a remarkable piece of molecular machinery - and starts the Kreb's Cycle, which is how we make energy. Pyruvate starts on the outside, and gets shunted inwards, stripped apart and energy extracted. It's SO BIG, that you can see it with a light microscope.
