OK, we know what Icarium is. Calm spells it out in TCG:

Quote

The two would seek each other out – they could do naught else. The dragon is negation. But Icarium is an open wound into Chaos itself. When his self shatters, when his so-called rage is unleashed, he is but a conduit, a portalway. This is why he cannot be stopped – he is not even there. Shall you do battle against chaos itself? Impossible.

We see this process begin when he's fighting everybody at the T'lan Imass Throne in BH.

But we have this, from Phyrlis in HoC:

Quote

'Foolish, unmindful T'lan Imass, to drive a spear into the grounds of an Azath House.'

'What did they know of houses, Cynnigig? Creatures of caves and hide tents. Besides, it was already dying and had been for years. Fatally wounded. Oh, Icarium was on his knees by the time he finally delivered the mortal blow, raving with madness.'

And Cotillion says this in BH:

Quote

"It is less a curse," he finally said, "than a … residue. The death of an Azath House releases all manner of forces, energies -- not just those belonging to the denizens in their earthen tombs. There is, burned into Icarium's soul, something like an infection, or, perhaps, a parasite. Its nature is chaos, and the effect is one of discontinuity. It defies progression, of thought, of spirit, of life itself. Mappo, that infection must be expunged, if you would save Icarium."

Icarium does not seem to be a portal to Chaos when he's on his knees, raving after having dealt the Azath its death blow. But he was infected with chaos at that moment! He was hugely powerful when he went to free his father (he thought he was freeing Gothos), and became the portal to Chaos as a result.

Yeah?

He is the son of an ascendant Jaghut and some female who is probably also powerful. He was probably born with the strength of a Jaghut Tyrant. On top of that he was obviously a scholar like his father and quite interested in technology. He likely had more than enough power and the means to do some serious damage to an Azath.

I suspect, if such a thing is possible, he is a Mortal Sword/Champion/Knight of Chaos. Like the maw of Anomander Rake was a portal into Darkness, so is Icarium probably also when that infection induced madness rears its head.

Btw, do we know what became of Icarum's new warped warrens? I feel like we kept hearing about them but never really saw them in action. Were they destroyed again or something? And did Grub and Sinn get access to them? Hopefully this is on topic enough with the OP...

Grub and Sinn were accessing them from DoD onward, so we did see them in action whenever those two used magic.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Really? I thought Sinn was going back to Thyrllan roots. I could believe Grub was using the new warren though, but it seemed so D'riss...

I think the deal was that they were similar, but fundamentally different in that they sprang from Icarium's actions/machinery/portaldom. They still exist after TCG and more will join the few who can use them right now.

Also, Badalle uses them too. Agree with amphibian that they aren't entirely different from previous iterations of sorcery, at least as far as we know yet (there are certainly plenty more named by Feather Witch than are used), but they are extremely powerful. That's why Sinn and Grubb are able to take down sky keeps, and Badalle outclasses several Forkrul Assail.

During her fight with Stormy, Stormy at first resists Telas then Sinn switches to something new and Stormy burns. I presume that was her using one of icarium's new warrens.

sinn's always been unhinged, and everyone feared her power. i still liked her, but i think you have to read tCG to really understand how truly traumatized she'd been during her life before kalam mekhar met her. and then she was traumatized all over again.

Yes, everything that she'd gone through simply broke her and she lost her humanity. Very sad.
Laseen did nothing wrong.
