I've managed to get a modem/router which is considerably nice than the one currently in use.

But...

I've messed around with my internet connection in the past, and usually end up without a conection at all, and a box asking me for various multi-digit numbers, codes, addresses or passwords that I don't have, or don't know.

So. I've set it up, run the install, and already its asking me for a username and password for my internet connection. I didn't even know I had one, since I set it up ages ago. How the hell do I find out that sort of thing?
Is that info my provider has or something, or just another thing I should have written down years ago and not lost?

Also, if I put in all the details of my current connection and for some reason it doesn't work, will my old one still work, or will I have to reinstall that?

Sound incredibly dumb I know, but I'm just asking before I end up connectionless and without anyone sensible to ask, having lost said connection (I know there are some sensible people out there, or at least knowledgeable and usually helpful.. hey, I'm being optimistic).

Wow, I sound like a total technophobe.
So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Modem upgrades can be trouble, it's true.

The password and stuff you've already encountered is probably for your ISP. For example, it probably wants something like traveller@yourisp.net as the username, and an associated password which you should have received when you first signed up with your ISP. Contact them if you've lost it.

Other than that, you shouldn't have any trouble - if you're setting up a wireless network, you'll want to set a password for that, but you shouldn't need one to get connected if you're starting a new modem/router setup.

Unfortunately, modems and routers are heavily brand-specific. There are some parallels, like what I've mentioned above so far, but a lot of it can be dependent on the make and model. For example, my old router was incompatible with Windows Vista, for some reason. Wrangled a free new modem out of my ISP, then purchased my own wireless router to give me WIFI. Hassle-free setup for both, though.

It should really be straightforward plug-and-play, basically. Just your ISP details, really. But sometimes things go funky, I know.

ETA: Oh, and you shouldn't have any trouble getting back online using your old modem after you've set your new one up. It's just drivers and such that they're installing, so they shouldn't conflict. If they do, call your ISP for help (crappy as such service often is, heh).

What Silencer said, except I have a question.

Did you get a modem, or a router?

If it is a modem, you need the connection info from your ISP.

If it is a router, there shouldn't be any connection info. There might be a base admin account and password that you need to enter the device to make any kind of changes. If it is a router, you should be able to skip the username/password screen if you have it plugged into a seperate modem.

Exactly what Obdi said.

However, I will say that between router brands there is a VERY DISPARATE array of setup methods. The good ones are: plug in all the cables, done. The bad ones will get you to jump through 30 pointless dialogs and refuse to let you leave the settings to the factory default.

If you've got a new modem (I'm not really sure why you would, as most ISPs have them for you), you're in for a pain in the ass setup regardless.

On your router, there should be a little "pin hole" that you can stick a toothpick in (or the end of paper clip) to reset the log in credentials. After doing that you can try Admin/Admin (or admin/admin) or admin and leave the password blank. If that doesn't work, do a google search for your brand/model. If that doesn't work, call tech support. Sirpitharan Nagadatalagoran should have the answer.

If you use old modem/router - you should be able to go back to it and look at it's setup screens for userids etc for connecting to the ISP

What I've got is a modem router. The new one installs up to a point where is says it wants a login name and password. I have the login and password to my server account, and the username/password for the router, but neither of these work.

Also, because I didn't get the router from my provider, they won't help.

So to save a lot of buggering about (for today anyway) I'll contact my provider again and get an upgrade through them instead - at tleast they have to give me support then, as well as all the details that I need to set it up.

This is why I left it so long to bother with an upgrade in the first place...

Thanks for the advice!

Location and ISP might help. Some ISPs in the UK for example won't let you use a device other than the one they supplied. Also most ISPs in the UK don't use a username and password, there should be a check box in your router to indicate this if that's the case for your ISP.

Beyond the username and password to actually get into the device the only information I need when setting up a new modem/router is:
Multplexing method
VPI
VCI
Static IP address details (most people have dynamic IP addresses so would only need to tick a box saying "get IP from ISP" or similar)
DNS details

I think your problem is totally that you own a PC

You should totally buy a mac, they never ever crash and are made by a super innovative company and they're really, like, good for graphics programs and stuff and theyre SO EASY.

Isn't that a bit like going out and buying a new car because the radio in yours has stopped working?? :D
