The Empire, long united, must divide. For decades wars have been waged across what was once the territory of the great Han empire. From a horde of ambitious men rose three heroes with the will and virtue to shape the land and men. Three men. Three kingdoms. And for a while, those kingdoms held an unofficial ceasefire, each afraid to engage a second kingdom leaving the third open to attack.

In 219, Yuan Shao died in Luoyang at the age of 77, having failed to unify China under his rule. His will instructed that he be buried near Ximen Bao's tomb in Ye with gold and jade treasures, and that his high-ranking subjects on duty at the frontier were to return to Ye to attend the funeral as, in his own words, "the country is stable". As soon as word reached the courts of Zhang Xiu and Huang Zhong, immediate preparations began for all-out war. Shao's eldest surviving son Yuan Tan was enfeoffed as quickly as possible and began his own preparations. Years were spent crafting siege weapons, raising horses and conscripting able men from across the kingdoms. By 225 AD, the three kingdoms were on the brink of all-out war. And while the middle kingdoms looked inwards at each other, the lords beyond the border saw their own opportunity.

The Empire, long divided, must unite. To unite, there must be one, and only one Emperor.

About the Series / Game Context

For those who have not played all (or any) of the Rot3K games, this post will help you get up to speed.

What is the Rot3K series?

Romance of the Three Kingdoms is a mostly-fictional novel detailing the history of China from the fall of the Han Dynasty (beginning about 184 AD) to the rise of the Jin Dynasty (265 AD). In between the Han and Jin, numerous warlords battle across the land for control of China, and eventually three particular warlords - Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Quan - each take over a third of China and found their own dynasties (Wei, Shu and Wu, respectively). It is a long period of near-continuous war, strife and a changing society. Eventually Cao Cao's descendant is usurped by Sima Yan, who founds the Jin Dynasty which conquers Shu and Wu, unifying the land once again.

The Rot3K Mafia series is a set of mafia games themed with characters and events from Romance of the Three Kingdoms as well as the factual history of that period. However, the events of the mafia series' plot is based upon the outcome of the games in the series, and so the "history" of the Rot3K mafia games does not follow actual history: instead of Cao Cao, Liu Bei and Sun Ce/Quan dominating the realm, Yuan shao, Zhang Ji/Xiu and Huang Zhong have become the eminent warlords of the age since they were the three surviving factions of the "The Rise of Heroes" game. Where events are not dictated by games, I have tried to allow the history of the series to diverge where characters would disagree with the characters who were in their shoes historically. Yuan Shao was a bitter rival of the Gongsuns of the north, so he never made peace with them and must now contend with them at his rear, whereas Cao Cao gave Gongsun Du an official post and treated him well.

Perhaps the most significant difference between the two is that I have condensed events into a shorter timeline in order to maintain many of the same characters. Fans of the Dynasty Warriors games may find it perfectly natural for Cao Cao and Liu Bei to take the field against each other in a great showdown, but in true history all the original heroes died and the wars were carried on by their descendants for decades. But that's not nearly as fun to play, so in these mafia games you'll have Sima Yi usurping the throne himself, and Huang Zhong taking the field instead of their grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Do I need to go back and re-read 8 mafia games to understand this one? How much do the previous games impact the later ones?

The previous games impact the decisions I made in creating the games that follow them. Characters who survive games often appear in later ones with similar abilities to before. Depending on which side won the previous games has heavily influenced the plot of the games - if Liu Bei's forces had won "Liu Bei's Conspiracy" Yuan Shao would have died and a renewed Han would have replaced Yuan Shao as the leading faction. This also has affected the balance. If Yuan Shao had won the Battle of Shang Yong, his faction would be much larger than Zhang Xiu's or Huang Zhong's at this final battle. Since Yan forces won the Nanman Rebellion game, they will not have to face Nanman forces to their rear in this final game, but Ma Teng and Gongsun Zan won their minis so they are present again.

So there is a lot of inter-game impact. Do you need to go back and read? No. The decisions have all happened and the game is built, all you need to know to play this game will be in these OPs and your role PM.

But, some players may discuss previous games, events and characters and it may be relevant to conversation. So, below is a brief list of the previous games in the series with quick overviews. Furthermore, there are threads with a copy of scenes from all the games and a list of all the characters made from my on-going series notes that you can use for quick reference.

Game Mechanics

All players will have the following qualities:

Player Name: the regular forum name of the player (ex: D'rek)
Alt: the alternate login used by the player for the game
Role: the character name of the role assigned to them (ex: Dong Zhuo)
Role Type: roles are divided into different types depending on their importance and abilities
Faction: the kingdom to which the player belongs
Title: the character's honorary title or office, dependent on the game history and progress. Has no significance.

Coroner Find:

A full CF for all players in effect, including all the above data.

Victory Conditions:

This is a fight to the bitter end. A faction and its players win when there are no other players left in the game. The game may be called early by the mods, but only if there is no feasible way for any but one faction to win. It is possible (but unlikely) that the game will become a stalemate situation where no surviving faction can destroy the other, in which case the game will end in a tie between those factions.

Phases:

The game follows a standard Day-Night cycle, but some events are considered to occur at Dawn (after Night ends, before Day begins) or Dusk (after a Lynch/timer expiration, before Night begins).

Day will last up to 36 hours. Night will last up to 6 hours. Dawn and Dusk are theoretically instantaneous, but will be subject to how fast a mod can resolve what needs resolving (if anything).

Since night is not instantaneous, players can change NAs during the night. However, due to the complexity of the game, once a mod begins resolving night no new actions will be accepted. The mod will usually state on-thread when they begin resolving.

The mod-kill timer will be 36 hours.

Map and Tiles:

The game takes place across ancient China. This will be depicted via an arrangement of "tiles" or "locations". Every player will always be at one (and only one) Location. A location can have any number of players. The location of two players significantly impacts the success of night actions performed by one, targeting the other.

Locations are inherently neutral and do not favour any faction over another, but specific player abilities may be tied to certain locations. The starting locations of the players are limited by what area their faction controls within the game history.

Spoiler

The names of the locations are based on the largest cities or important landmarks within their general area. When other cities are named, it is often a hint that events are occuring in the closest location.

Moving and Notices:

Moving between Locations is accomplished during the day using the Move ability. All players have access to this ability.

Move - If there are no enemy players in your location, you may move to any adjacent location. If there is one or more enemy players in your location, you may move to any adjacent location at which there is another player from your faction. You will be told if it fails or succeeds. If the move fails, you may not try again on the same day.

Emperors may only move at Dawn and must submit a provisional for the Move in advance or they will not Move. All other players may not submit provisionals for Move - it resolves via Ironman rules (no provisionals, actions are globally resolved in the order they are submitted).

Players with the role type Civil Official, Military Officer or Usurper are able to use this ability:

Notice - All players in your location, regardless of faction, are given a message of your choosing. The message can consist of anything non-meta (ie: you may not say "Fener is Silencer!") but must be 6 words or less.

Notices are anonymous.

Notice also resolves via Ironman rules.

All players may only use Move or Notice once per day (total - they cannot both be used on the same day).

Night Actions:

Players have access to a wide variety of Night Actions depending on their role and role type. All Night Actions can largely be divided into either Standard (Std) or Special (Spc) NAs.

Standard Night Actions:

There are four standard NAs: Guard, Find, Heal and Kill.

Guard - Prevents the targeted player from using their own abilities. Works on most non-standard night abilities, too.
Find - Discloses to the caster the role name and faction of the targeted player.
Heal - Prevents the targeted player from dying during the night. A single heal can prevent unlimited attempts on their life. Succeeds even if the player casting Heal is themself killed (see resolution order). You cannot cast Heal on yourself.
Kill - Eliminates the targeted player.

Standard NAs can only be used on players that are in the same location or an adjacent location, or else they will automatically fail (and will not have any other impact on the remaining night actions, such as Blocking). Standard mafia rules governing these abilities applies, such as "Guards guard Guards".

The resolution order is: Guard >> Heal >> Find >> Kill

Blocking:

When a player targets another player in an adjacent location, the NA will fail if a player in the target's location and faction uses the same NA. This can be the target themself or one of their allies. Each standard NA can be blocked, but only by the same NA. Blocking takes effect prior to all standard actions (such as guards) being resolved). A single player can block any number of actions at a time.

Players of the same faction never block heals or finds originating from their own faction, but will block a guard or kill if it is targeting a third player in their faction. Players will always try to block enemy finds, kills or guards. Players will never try to block heals because they can only block actions against their own team and any heal towards their own team is beneficial for them.

Night actions targeting players outside their location and adjacent locations ("out-of-range" actions) do not block.

Example NAs:

Factions are denoted by colour (ie: all green people are in the same faction)

Example 1: Liu Bei blocks Fan Chou
Spoiler

Example 2: Li Ru and Zhang Liao block for each other
Spoiler

Example 3: One action can block multiple other actions and applies to all faction-members in the location
Spoiler

Example 4: Friendly and unfriendly (non-)blocking of heals
Spoiler

Blocking only works between adjacent locations. A night action targetting a player in the same location as the actioner cannot be Blocked.

Example:
Spoiler

Duels/Debates:

If two players of different factions, in the same location or adjacent locations, use the same standard action on each other it will create a Duel (if the NA is heal or kill) or Debate (if the NA is guard or find). This can occur between any two players of different factions who are capable of performing standard actions, or between players of the same faction if they try to kill each other.

Any player with standard NAs will, at the beginning of the game, create a pre-determined duel and/or debate sequence, consisting of a subset of the five possible duel/debate actions in a particular order. When a duel/debate occurs each player's sequence is pitted against the other's, one action from each player at a time. Each action beats two other actions but loses to another two and ties with itself. Each time a player's action loses they lose a health point. If a player reaches 0 they die. All players start with 5 health points and they carry over between duels/debates. At the end of every duel/debate, the any surviving players gain 5 health points.

Example:
Spoiler

Special Night Actions:

Special night actions are unique abilities available only to few or only one player depending on their role and role type. They cannot be Blocked and do not result in Duels/Debates. Most of them are still affected by Guard or Heal actions.

Action Submission:

Due to the sheer volume of actions and PMs, there will be very strict regulations on how and where to submit actions to Path-Shaper. Submissions which are out of place or do not match the submission rules may not be counted.

Reveals, Quoting, Meta, etc.

Players are permitted to reveal whatever they like. Players are also permitted to claim whatever secret information and sources they like. However, players may not use the forum quote function to copy text from private messages into the game thread or other private messages, due to the legitimacy of the message encoding displayed. Players should instead copy+paste the text from the messages and use that text directly or in new blank quote tags. Offenders will be modkilled. When in doubt, ask the mods first.

Since this is the culmination of a series of games and has many aspects based on the outcome of previous games, meta-discussion concerning previous games in the Rot3K series is permitted. Players may also discuss information from the Scenes and Character summary threads. Players may not meta-discuss player behaviour/habits (ie: "Gem always low-posts on day 5", "Bwgan overuses the cheerleader smiley"). Anything outside the scope of the Rot3K series is also forbidden as per the usual regulations. When in doubt, ask the mods first.

Factions & Roles

There are six factions in the game:

The Xia Dynasty
Founded by Yuan Shao when the last Han Emperor abdicated the throne to him. Controls the land north of Jing and east of Chang An.

The Lu Dynasty
Founded by Zhang Xiu in protest to Yuan Shao's usurpation of the Han throne. Controls the western lands from Chang An to Cheng Du.

The Yan Dynasty
Founded by Huang Zhong after the founding of Xia and Lu. Stretches along the Chang Jiang river and extends far to the south.

Gongsun Zan's northern fighters (The White Riders)
An army of foreign invaders from north of the Great Wall. Lead by Gongsun Zan, calling for vengeance against Yuan Shao's clan for destroying Zan's distant relative, Gongsun Du.

Ma Chao's Xiliang forces
Rebellious Xiliang (aka Guanxi) forces from the far west. Lead by Ma Chao, son of Ma Teng, a warlord with a long-lasting hatred for the Zhang Ji clan.

Sima Yi
A manipulative high official within one of the kingdoms with imperial ambitions of his own.

Role Types:

There are 10 role types in the game. Here's an overview of 7 of them.

Emperor
Each middle kingdom is commanded by an Emperor. Emperors know most of the role names and Locations of the players in their kingdom, but not the alts. They do know the alts of their Prime Ministers. Emperors have special abilities that can affect numerous players, but may involve some risk in using.

Prime Minister
Each middle kingdom also has a Prime Minister. Prime Ministers can use the standard heal, guard and find night actions, as well as special abilities that can assist other players in their dynasty and provide their Emperor with extra information.

Civil Official
Civil Officials can use the standard guard and find night actions. They know the alt and Location of their Emperor. During the day, if they are in the same Location as their Emperor, they can change into Military Officers.

Military Officer
Military Officers can use the standard heal and kill night actions. They know the alt and Location of their Emperor. During the day, if they are in the same Location as their Emperor, they can change into Civil Officials.

Warlord
Ma Chao and Gongsun Zan are Warlords. They each command their own faction and are initially limited to the extreme edges of the map.

Champion
Champions are the underlings of warlords. They can use the standard kill night action.

Usurper
There is one Usurper: Sima Yi. He is an underling in one of the middle kingdoms. At some point in the game, he will begin recruiting followers to his cause. When his Emperor dies, Sima Yi becomes an Emperor (at which point he can no longer recruit) and his followers become the Jin faction.

Standard ME Mafia Rules (these apply unless contradicted by the OP posts above):

1 - General Structure
Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. Many games also have time limits on the days, and if no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, tThe mods will then report on the outcome of the day, sometimes with an accompanying 'scene' for flavour. Then night begins. Players may continue posting in the thread (unless they've been voted out) but no voting is allowed. Night ends either when the set time has passed, or when all actions are in, to the mod's discretion. The mods will subsequently report on the outcome of the night actions, again sometimes with an accompanying scene for flavour. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase
During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics
(On a separate line)
To vote for a player: bold that player's name (preferably with the word 'vote' before it).
To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night (preferably with the word 'vote' before it).
To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.
To change your vote: remove vote and place a different vote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions
You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions
The use of bold should be limited to voting. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined
A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day
The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the game has a day time limit and the players fail to achieve a majority, once the time limit has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - End of Day Scene
The mods will often post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player's alt or alignment. This is the mods' choice, and they'll explain what, if any, information will be revealed in the game rules. There are usually no hidden clues in the end of day scenes.

3 - Night Phase
During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. Once again, the mods decide which roles will be included for their game, so be sure to fully read the game rules and any role descriptions which may be included.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action
If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear to the roled players, and, usually, to all other players as well. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. Most games have a time limit on nights (12 hours is the time limit for the present game). All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this time frame. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible. You may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase, this is very strongly encouraged.

3.2 - Contingent PM
If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods (example: if Meanas is lynched I kill Kaschan, otherwise I kill Hood's Path).

3.3 - Provisional PM
You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM
In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM
If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action
PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit
If the mods have included a night time limit, it begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions
Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene
The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player's alt or alignment. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame
The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions
The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods have stated

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene
The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early
The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers
When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

RULES

All players must:

A1) Have an account on malazanempire.com/forums

A2) Log in and view the thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons

A3) Post at least once every 36 hours. Any player who has not posted within the last 36 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread. Warnings will be issued after 24 hours and subsequently closer to the deadline.

The mods may grant extensions to this limit in some cases (if so, they will give details in a later post). However, if they have not posted on the thread to announce an extension before the 24 hour limit is reached, no extension will be granted, whatever may have been said elsewhere. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension.

A4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit

A5) Treat everybody else playing with courtesy and respect, or failing that as you would want to be treated.

A6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

A7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if they feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so.

A8) You must not edit previous posts unless to change code tags, spelling or grammar.

Players must not:

B1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of a faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

B2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

B3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) Give anybody access to any of their accounts (including game alts, if the game is using them), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

B5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

B6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread. Refrain from using meta arguments in thread, or from referring to your reasons as being based on meta.

B7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.
B8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts accidentally made after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) Make any bets about the game.

B10) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW

C1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", lashing, spanking, paddling, the rack, thumbscrews, waterboarding, time-out, death and/or ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

C2) Feel free to PM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

C3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread and anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players who no longer wish to play) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Only dead players will have access to the Beyond. Please note that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so. Any posts found to contravene these rules will be deleted and the responsible players will be added to a blacklist for any future games run my this mod.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not:

D1) Share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) Make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself

D4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

D5) PM living or dead players with comments on the game.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

Hey serc I don't know about you but I am having dirty thoughts about silanah, Korlat and Tiamatha. I can see a little group action going on in the future.

Nihao all! This game looks like it's going to be a blast! Love the new avatars, although I hope they're sufficiently distinguishable at a glance. Probably will be, as I can see there's quite a variation in background colour and clothing colour to make them all unique.

Vote Serc

For not knowing Chinese.

Just because you get it on with every Ascendent in town is no reason to think you're prettier than me

Dear, you seem to be confused between the meanings of <sexiest> and <sluttiest> ....
You DO know there is a difference, right?

I reckon you skipped your <Tea Ceremony> and <Flower Arrangement> classes in favor of questionable night activities...

While you two cat-fight i'll get on with being the prettiest girl in town and will fight whoever challenges this truth.
