It looks like it belongs in one of the Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark books, if anyone is familiar with those (middle school staples, for folks my age). That's a compliment, the art in those books was scarier than the stories, often enough.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

wow, totally didn't notice the similarity, but you're right, it's got the freaky kind of pale and uncertain look about it. very unnerving
