The 3 detectives in the well really brought things together well. The numberphilia of HoleFace fits really well for his motivations and inability to do the wells previously.

Have to wonder what the Director/Walker's motives are, though... how much of this is according to his plan and how much is it going wrong? Seems like so far he'd never have been caught if he didn't send up the trap on Momoki in the first place... but maybe he had to do something because HoleFace didn't die and would have lead to him being caught eventually.

Recall what Kiki said in the well inside Sakaido's well - that she projects her thoughts to those around her. So the tub and suit have to have something to do with amplification, surely?

How much of that is a thing she can do in real life versus just a thing she can do in a well / in her dreams (within dreams) / in another way through the mizuhanomeme...?

But yeah, I would guess that what she can do "normally" in real life is the same as what we saw her doing to Narihisago in the well-within-a-well -> he was getting brief flashes of her thoughts/memories occasionally, but they were short and not very distinct. The whole suit/tub/mizuhanonoyes/etc probably amplifies that ability in general and specifically they used it to make wells... probably among other things.

Pretty good ending all around, but not great.

Why did Momoki point a gun at Kiki if it wasn't loaded and he never wanted her to even think he was going to kill her?

I get Kiki didn't know if they'd made the world safe for her or not so she was walking around to find out, but once she realized the situation why was she still just hanging around? I guess maybe she saw someone was coming and was hoping he would kill her? Otherwise go back to the pool on your own already.

The chase through wells and the way they got revenge on the director was awesome, and a nice bit of call back to the start. The whole "the director's escaping justice by living forever in an id well" doesn't sit all that well with me because aren't the wells stored electronically or something? Couldn't they just have the software delete all the wells he's in/connected to and load backups or some such? But I am definetely overthinking this one.

Flash forward to status quo ending... I'm surprised Narihisago didn't die, honestly. I guess his character arc could go either way satisfactorily. Turns out there's a sequel manga being written, so I guess this is a big multimedia project now, so makes sense they'd do a status quo ending, though a bit disappointing.


Seeing how it all ends and whatnot now, here's what I personally would've done differently to make it better:

1. Don't have Momoki be the cop-turned chief outer detective role - instead, make him the assistant to the dead mizuhanome inventor guy. Establish early on who Kiki was, that she was haunted by dreams of being murdered and could project her emotions/subconscious a bit, that Momoki and the professor were researching her, that the mizuhanome was invented based off their research of her, and that one of the serial killers abducted and killed her (instead of the convoluted back-and-forth kidnapping timeline she has). As far as anyone knows the mizuhanome is just a machine based on what they learned of her abilities, but at the same time in the story that the Director let her loose in the show,
reveal that she wasn't actually killed and as has been powering the mizuhanome the whole time. As it stands in the show, Momoki's drive to save Kiki came very late and wasn't particularly fleshed out - this would make his finding her at the end and what they say a lot more meaningful.

2. When Kiki goes back into the tank and Momoki tells her to keep hoping, they show a hopeful, hypothetical scene of Sakaido going into a well and meeting an alive Kaeru. Don't do that then. Insetad, change the final flash-forward to the status quo ending into a "X years later, pseudo-status quo" scene where they're diving into a well just like we saw. But Momoki or whoever tells them they've never tried this type of well, be ready for anything, and everyone's all 'I hope this works'. And THEN do that hopeful alive Kaeru scene, because it's their successful breakthrough in succeeding at helping Kiki.

3. Add some short reasoning for why they can't reactivate the machine even if Kiki goes back into the tank until Sakaido and HoleyLoli defeat the chief - you know, the mizuhanome's security codes are locked to his active subconscious but if his Id isn't detected anymore it'll auto-reboot or some such.


All that being said, it was a hell of a ride, a ton of fun, had me completely hooked every week, and an original story, too! I'm extremely satisfied even if I think it could've been a little better.

I decided tonight to check out just the first episode of BNA, Trigger's new furry thriller (Beastars, Seton Academy, Retsuko... what's with all the anthromorphic animal shows all of a sudden?!). The first six episodes dropped on Netflix this week, and apparently the next six will drop all at once on same day in April. Weird release schedule, but ok.

Anyways, yeah I watched the first episode... and then immediately watched the next five. It's pretty great. Looks gorgeous, really fun cartoony Trigger visual style, the plot is wonderfully wacky and bizarre as any Trigger show should be, and blue-haired tanuki girl in an adidas jacket is a great character design (she has to have blue hair, she's an arrogant and kinda dumb Trigger protagonist, it's tradition).

I decided to go ahead and torrent all of Sharpe... so i guess im going to be in Sean Bean mode for the foreseeable future.

I also binged all of Beastars. I really liked it. Basically Zootopia for adults (despite zootopia ft. adults and Beastars is ft. teenagers)
