Midweek roundup:

PP: Chise episodes are always good, although I have a worry about what will happen next given the context of the end of the episode. We'll have to wait and see, I guess. The duel was very well done.

HNG: Don't you just hate it when a character does something really fucking dumb for no reason? Although the next episode is the last; it looks like Junichi is going to have a big damn heroes moment. I'm hoping it ends strongly because the general runtime for the series has been strong all around.

Smartphone: Random oppai grabbing kinda made this week a bit tawdry. The overall story for the episode was good, but the invisible loli grapples giant oppai and blames also invisible MC was stupid.

Aho-Girl: Back on form. This week's episode was utterly stupid and I loved every second.

TDC: Best couple? No longer best? Finally, we get some drama.

Decided to get caught up on MHA. OMG IT WAS GLORIOUS!!!!!! Getting to binge that entire arc <3

MHA continues to deliver quality content, solid pacing and good character development. Like i really like how we are seeing the various characters grow and mature. (though i do hope something is done with that insufferable bakugou. We've been shown hints of depth with him but has yet to materialise). Maybe his upcoming final test will do something.


Though unforunately i need to wait a few more weeks before binging again, sucks as i saw the latest episode which just starts a new arc.

Also finally decided to be an ethical person and get a crunchyroll sub

Added a bunch of things to the queue so i been watching some random shit
Basilisk: Came reccomended to me when i was a teenager. Its ok thus far, fights are interesting and all but the characters are all kinda meh/bland. It hasn't aged well.
World god only knows: Amusing thus far, seen 3 eps undecided how far ill continue.
Sakamoto: saw first half of ep1, not bad, kinda funny but i get the feeling id get bored.

Ehhhh... I'm having the opposite reaction. I don't feel like the characters have developed at all, they're just acting the same way as before but in new situations (and I guess they can use their powers a wee bit better... but the difference isn't interesting). And the way MHA makes "jokes" is really starting to grate on me. That otter captain guy being "kawai" for two seconds wasn't all that funny the first time, let alone the four other times they repeated it.

I wasn't that big of a fan of MHA from the start, but this feels especially stagnant.

I enjoyed Sakamoto when it aired, but have zero desire to rewatch it nor even think of it fondly anymore. Might be one of those shows that is fun watching as it airs with the internet memes but not nearly as good just taken on its own merits?


TWGOK - I saw the first few episodes of this a long time ago and really couldn't get into it at all, but some people online seem to absolutely adore it, especially after the second season, so who knows!


YLiA - it's one of those shows that gets talked about A LOT so it could be worth watching just to be "in the know". IMO, it has problems with trying to do too many things and therefore not really nailing any of them... it's about high school love-square, but then it's about the MC being inspired to play piano again, but then it's about the competition and drama between all these piano prodigies, but then it's about the MC's relationship with his mother...

Plot-wise, I think it has a lot of problems. I also think it has some weird writing/pacing where some episodes have these weird long, long monologues (usually while someone is performing) that stick out.

BUT, all that being said, I think it's a series that has a lot of great moments. The plot's build-ups might have structural problems, but there's still many individual scenes where the events, the directing, the voice acting, animation, soundtrack, all come together for a big triumphant climax or a shock or an emotional reaction.

And a lot of people disagree with me about the plot thing. Heck, a lot of people say it's in their top five ever.

I foudn the humour in the seal captain to be more related to froppy's reactions XD
Overall i disagree what with Lida character having to grow through the fight. Hes starting to realise the weight of the legacy he will have to take and ultimately this furthers his growth as a character. On the surface hes the same but underneath hes learned a fair bit.

Midoriya is growing into his power, and while i don't think this is character growth per say im hoping the fight with bakugou will lead to further improvements in his character.

I see D'reks point about expecting character growth but then I highlight how the last episode is one huge set up for character growth particularly regarding Bakugo and Midoriya.

I am not sure which way Bakugo will develop at this point. He'd make an equally good villain or hero and might fit the Dragon TV trope if hand guy didn't already fill that position.

I like the ideas behind the big bad and hate the fact All Might doesn't think he'll be around for long which all but hammers in the nail on the coffin but I look forward to it aswell. Not often you get a death of superman situation and the promise of it gives MHA some decent emotional range.

We've had setups for character growth for Deku and Bakugo (individually and together) before, though, and I don't feel like much has come from it. Did Bakugo's personality or aggression towards Deku change at all after Deku and Uraraka beat him in the bomb challenge? Or from seeing Deku and All Might engage villains up-close? Or when Deku beat him and Todoroki in the obstacle race? Or when he apprenticed with Best Jeanist specifically because Best Jeanist wanted to rein in his personality? Why should this be any different?

Now Deku and Bakugo have already been teamed up, and Bakugo has already angrily walked off not wanting to discuss/strategize/etc with Deku. After all the opportunities so far, if Bakugo suddenly mid-fight flips his personality and accepts Deku that's going to feel pretty contrived.

And while we're on the topic, the whole "Deku's jumping from pipe to pipe is copying Bakugo's moves" thing is sooooo stupid. It's not even like Deku or Bakugo have super-agility powers. There must be hundreds of superheroes who already move around with that same human agility, none of the students should remotely think that any of that could "belong" to Bakugo and it just makes Bakugo himself look even more irrational/stupid.

I'm gonna try respond here on your thoughts but as its on my phone it may be a bit jumbled so please bear with me.

Bakugo and Deku are on two sides of a multi-sided conversation. The theme is not strength, the theme is what makes a good hero? Deku believes it's acting without hesitation to help others Bakugo believes it's gaining ultimate strength and recognition to rival all opponents. They're both looking at it wrong. Acting without hesitation without capability is pointless, being capable while hesitating in the face of danger is pointless.

We were promised one major thing, Deku will become earths greatest hero. To do this he inherited power from earths current greatest hero. He qualifies for it by having the instinct to help and the mind to help effectively. He however has a huge hurdle in that he has to learn to reign in his ability.

Bakugo though was born with a power that anyone would classify as ideal for a quick rise to the height of the heroic world. He is effective at using it and has a natural instinct that comes from growing with an ability to use it effectively. His key hurdle is not his hatred of Deku. It's hatred for his fear. He knows more than anyone Deku has him beat in this key area and everyone of Dekus victories reminds him that he has this fear inside him that he struggles with.

Bakugo has to grow in two ways- either he learns to accept his fear and work around it or he learns to face his fear and overcome it. He picks the second option and embodies Deku as the manifestation of that fear. That's why he doesn't seem to be growing. How can u learn or humble yourself towards someone that stands to represent the one time you faced real fear and gave into it.

it seems to me, In order for them to become the best hero, either of these two characters are the best examples for the other to learn from.

Enter Almight.

Bakugo needs to be shown fear again. He needs to accept it. Almight is one of the few characters Bakugo can truly TRULY fear. If he experiences it with Deku and Deku helps him through it the character would reach a growth point. He could double down, hate Deku and turn away from all Deku represents but something tells me he will get a chance to reflect properly. This is, in my mind, the best place for all this to happen and, in my opinion, it's being setup to do so.

Not sure why this would seem contrived. I think it's good writing really. It's very clear this is Bakugos chance to face his inner demons and issues with Deku within a controlled environment. Almight was there when it last happened, he might have the best insight to what Bakugos going through.

I have more to say buuuut I need to go give the kid a bath. Will follow up later.

Ill be quite honest i don't think we've had setups for character growth between the two. Rather midoriyas consistent victories (through a combination of luck and skill) has hammered bakugou down more and more. None of those fights had the necessary ability to bring out anything in bakugou aside from more rage. All the other conflicts were there for midoriya's sake. Best jeanist reining ths guy personality in a week? Lets be real you can't change someone fundamentally in a week. Takes time, that was more for the lols and the fact jeanist likely thought he could have some impact.

None of the setups had any potential to change because all the previous setups were focused around other character (specifically midoriya). This part is specifically setup around deku and bakugou because they have to work together.

Also with how MHAs has been going i strongly doubt it would be anything as contribed as what you are saying. If the writing was going to be contrived MHA wouldn't have been able to have such strong characters and characterisation to begin with. The writer knows their craft well.

In regards to your last point, they were likely reffering to the fluidity of motion. THe way bakugou moves when fighting has been mentioned a few times and its specifically how natural or fluid the motion is. That's what they were going on about. Therese ton of hero that move like that but thats besides the point, the point of that was to show how midoriyas made other progress in the use of his ability.

Heh LP beat me to it. I echo that point about the movements. I feel that was done purely to highlight to Bakugo that Midoriya got better, also maybe it had to happen for obvious story reasons. How can they fight and possibly collaborate if as they're doing right now they arent talking to each other. Should they end up tag teaming against Almight, Dekus understanding of Bakugos skills would have precedent and vice versa. One through study the other through instinctual understanding of himself.

I'm dubious if that's how the author even really thinks of it, though, since they haven't had some monologue-ish expository explanation of it, like they seem to do for everything. Take the latest episode, for example - Froggy and Shadowboy do a neat little bit of teamwork evading the clones, with a quick little line of "good thing we planned that ahead of time", which takes about 5 seconds. Then we cut to Deku and the nurse watching who give us 30 seconds of explaining through dialogue that Froggy and Shadowboy have skills that they can use to help each other evade, and that it's a good thing they planned their teamwork... well no shit, we just saw that, you don't have to explain it for us all over again!

I feel like that sort of ham-handed explanation happens all the time in this show, to the point that I'm skeptical of believing any themes/ideas that aren't explained to me like I'm stupid are unintentionally present...


And sure, call it "moving fluidly" or whatever, it's still IMO dumb for any one character to "claim" that for himself and get irrationally angry when anyone else "moves fluidly".

I feel like that sort of ham-handed explanation happens all the time in this show, to the point that I'm skeptical of believing any themes/ideas that aren't explained to me like I'm stupid are unintentionally present...


And sure, call it "moving fluidly" or whatever, it's still IMO dumb for any one character to "claim" that for himself and get irrationally angry when anyone else "moves fluidly".

thats a strange pet peeve to have as a Shounen anime Fan.

Shounen anime throw exposition around like its going out of fashion. I'm sure youve heard that sort of thing in all the big recent anime. Ie when Goku levels up to a new power level in DBZ super suddenly theres understanding from an onlooker ie Whis who now breaks down every aspect of his new form ie wasteful energy, efficient but low in power, quicker etc, giving a breakdown why its better than the last. this is pretty staple stuff in most manga based Anime which stems from a need to explain things in one shot away from the fight panels where as few wording as possible is a must. This happens everytime any shounen anime character 'transforms'.

We often say how pacing feels off in some anime, that normally comes from too much time trying to show everything. Im sure they could have done a flashback like Naruto and Onepiece NEVER miss a chance to do but I personally would rather hear them say 'hey good thing we set that up' and switch to another set of characters reviewing what must have happened and then throw in an analysis. Im partial to this than the alternative because its keeping us in the moment and giving us multiple perspectives.

Yes this could be done better but I think most children watching this would struggle to figure out why teachers pair certain characters unless its spelt out. MHA is targeting that high school demographic after all so theres the need for these breakdowns. In MHA once a power is explained we dont hear these analytics again. We get no wasteful flash back either. I think youd find in the later seasons this happens less and less.

I think your opinion of the author is alot lower than they deserve. he has some nice subtleties hidden here and there that make me think he is also aware he writes for an older audience aswell. But on this we can just agree to disagree.

I like the art contest for characters. I like it for obvious bias but I'm disappointed by the game art the director responded to favorably? that said the interviews were funny enough. Still early days and I'm watching dubs so I can watch and work so might be missing some of the charm here and there but I do feel a bit of a shift in tone. Maybe they really do need a few new hires after all.

Still a fun anime to watch, I'm just noting some early impressions.

The overall tone of S2 is a little darker than S1; however this is more because Aoba is now under a lot more pressure, has more responsibility and isn't able to let herself be the new kid now. There's a theme that to achieve your dreams, you gotta put in the graft, blood, sweat and tears to get there.

Heh, yeah that scene was from so far out of left field when it hit I had to pause and think about what just happened. Hilarious and playing nicely into what I suspected about her cosplay skills.

I like it a lil more now, it is dealing with some hard subject matter regarding success or pursuing success I guess? Everyones going about it in an interesting way whilst somehow maintaining a team spirit through the tenser moments of the show.

I'm glad theres gonna be new hires and pleased to hear Aoba will be dealing with the weird place in a career I can loosely label being 'the new talent'.

I think New Game! Is similar to Bakumon. If you havent watched it, it's an anime about two guys that draw and write manga to achieve the artists marrital goals. I highly reccomend it in between your episode wait. Similar tone to New Game! and kind of the guys perspective of breaking into creative industry.

The new hire actually picks up that the artwork getting out there isn't Yagami's, and when she learns that it's actually Aoba who is doing it / the character designer for PECO, there's a rivalry formed. The end credits also changes to encompass the newbie; where there was always four, now there are five.

Genuinely looking forward to seeing where it goes.

Sakura Quest I believe ends this week (Ep24). And as I'm from the countryside, the subject broached at the end of the last episode was one I know about. I like that the show has been consistently strong through its runtime.

Had to carry on with Tokyo Ghoul - I wanted to make my mind up on it.

Season 2 has definitely dropped quality in animation terms. Sudden loss of detail, and some pretty epic fights have seemed too slow, like they're pc games being run on something that cant handle it.

But the story hasn't been awful so far, I'm going to stick with it until the end.

D'rek fucking called it when she said Princess was going to become an assassination target. What Ange had strived to prevent her friend from having to do, she's now being ordered to do herself. So presumably the prediction that they'll break ranks and flee is correct. It'll tie into the new commanding officer, doubtless.

Aho-Girl11: Absolute brilliance. The banana fropuccino deluxe scene was one of the funniest things I've watched in years, especially when Yoshiko's voice goes from Platinum the Trinity to Tanya Deguracheff in an instant. If you don't watch the show, at least watch the fight scene.

New Game!! - This week's episode felt kind of slow, although the characters note they're in a development lull. There wasn't really a great deal that happened. Like last season I assume it'll ramp up as we come towards the end.

I stumbled onto a new anime last night called bride of the ancient magus.

Has anyone seen this? It's good, artwork and animation is brilliant but the story caught my attention the most. Nothing is told. You fill it all in and it's subtle in a very dark heavy way...

I'm liking it a lot. Sort of a princess mononoke meets howls moving castle vibe.
