I agree that Ghost in the Shell was a great set of movies/show. I enjoyed the heck out of them. But I also believe that One Piece surpasses it - as in it handles the complex stories better, it gives more development to the side characters and so on.

No, the One Piece discussion isn't stale and it's already made at least one convert here - QuickTidal, who had many of the same objections as Silencer did. QuickTidal may have a different view on One Piece's place in the canon of animation, but he is watching it and enjoying it despite the length, the art, the hype and so on.

In return for that respect and willingness to listen to me, I've read books, watched tv/movies on his recommendation and usually had a pretty good hit rate. We're probably the two most ardent Evangelion ReBuild fans on this forum and me even engaging with Evangelion after having a mostly negative response to the first series is entirely due to his polite engagement with me.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Since I essentially haven't watch any OP, I'll stay out of the direct OP-talk. I was just jumping into the discussion to add my two cents to topics being brought up in the general sense.

Indeed. It's tough to give something the benefit of the doubt when you think it's not going to improve...but I'm fairly glad I did to be honest as it goves me something to watch/read that I have come to not only enjoy, but embrace.

thats fine, but what im sort of trying to get at is, is a framework for evaluating anime, that doesn't pressupose that X is the greatest. That is an enterprise doomed to failure.

Easily one of Japan's best directors (Ryuhei Kitamura, VERSUS) has done a live-action LUPIN III flick...and damned if it doesn't look really great! Capturing this particular anime would be tough, but it seems he's gone for just enough to ride the line and make what looks like an entertaining movie!

So, new season rolling around.

Obviously we have the new SAO season, featuring Gun Gale Online (which is awesome in LN form) and quite possibly Mother Rosario, which is more or less where I'm at in the novels.

Hanamonogatari - more Monogatari Second Season is always good. ;)

Aldnoah Zero - new Gen Urobuchi mecha series. I still haven't finished Suisei no Gargantia (despite only having about two episodes to go), so I guess unless this gets awesome feedback, I'll wait until it is finished airing before putting it on my "to watch" pile or not.

Persona 4 Golden - I probably don't need to watch this, considering I've seen Persona 4, played the Persona 4 Golden game, and know the Tropes page pretty well. However...I will in all probability end up watching it just because it's 1) more Persona and 2) I like Golden in game form for what it adds, so maybe the anime will be totally worth a rewatch? :p (If you haven't seen P4 original, you might as well watch this - it's pretty good, in the "nothing special" category...)

Zankyou No Terror - literally just read the synopsis for this one on TV Tropes, and aside from the insta-win that is a soundtrack by Yoko Kanno (second only to Kajiura Yuki-sama herself!), it sounds interesting at least at a high level. Whether the execution lives up to that will wait to be seen, but at least the soundtrack should be stellar. :p (I should point out; this is a noitaminA offering, so...Psycho-Pass, anyone? :p)

And that's it for things-on-my-radar at the moment. Further series to be added as and when I learn their names and Tropes/Google them to see if they might interest me.

....considering how freaking long my to-watch pile is (seriously, I'm not even finished Kyoukai no Kanata yet...two/three epis to go, which I'll likely watch today...but fuck...that was a few seasons ago, wasn't it?!?!?) a short list this season is probably a good thing. :S

well so far i've seen

SAO s2
tokyo ghoul
shirogane no ishi

zankyon no terror is on my to watch list. also while browsing anilinkz i noticed theres now a dub available of from the new world. Not that there's someone on htis forum who would be interested by this.

anyhow SAO s2 and tokyo ghoul might be good, but it's too early to tell. SHorigane had the most stereotypical opening for a mecha show. Either it steps up its game soon or im dropping it.

Finally finished Kyoukai just now. It was pretty meh in every respect save quality animation. I'd much rather KyoAni were to do more Chuunibyou and Haruhi and such than this stuff...as much as they probably really enjoy doing original works.

Still, I need to finish Hyouka which was overall a much better show with more room to manoeuvre given it's less...haphazard approach to what kind of themes it wanted and the number of episodes.

Re: Shin Sekai Yori in dub...Depending on the quality, I might be ok with that. I doubt it. But I still like to have a dub option for showing to friends who don't like subtitles/Japanese. If the dub doesn't totally doin ruin the show, ofc... Plus it means I will probably be able to buy the show on DVD soon. (I have a rule about buying shows I like that I've seen online, and the ones with priority are the ones I really enjoy, so SSY has been high on that list for a while, pending release...)

Anyone seen Knights of Sidonia? It just popped up on netflix after setting up this new tv.

I did, I enjoyed the first few episodes a lot as it slowly intergrated you into this very alien setting. If you like sci fi i reccomend it.

I watched a few mins of it and got a Gundam vibe. I ll be watching when I get spare time.

just cause its mecha doesn't make it gundam. I honestly didn't get any gundam vibes as at all. Bear in mind All Gundams center around human v human conflict, and exploration some theme within that context. In gundam wing it was the de-humanisation/robotisation of warfare, in seed it was about cloning, in 00 it was about the contradiction of fighting for peace. None of that in Sidonia no Kishi

Well...the first episode of P4G really announced its intention to be bigger and better than the original in every way. O.o

I wasn't expecting the step up in animation quality, or the extent of deviation from the original. They're really taking the game and expanding it.

Well...shit. End of an era. UTW is basically over. These guys are like the Platinum Standard in fansubbing. I kinda feel surprisingly sad to see Raze going - as much as he's right that Crunchyroll does pretty much everything, and to an 'acceptable' level...it's just not the same.

I know that as a general (forum) rule we don't discuss piracy or similar openly, but frankly I think this needed to be noted. UTW were awesome. They will be missed. :( (And Crunchyroll should be ashamed for being less good at their paid-for, script-provided job than a group of fansubbers...)

What is P4G?

Sometimes you guys just throw these acronyms or names all in japanese out and I have no idea what you're talking about :(

FMA brotherhood is certainly worth the time. The original was weak at points.

For the first few episodes both series share the same story. If I remember correctly, the original series veers from the source material. FMA Brotherhood follows that source material (a manga I think?) more closely, and for the better in my opinion.

Sorry, it's just a lot easier to type the abbreviation (which is more or less how I think of it from the game) on a mobile. XD
