Thinking of watching Shirobako again, that was a great show. I really wish they were going to do more of it but I haven't heard anything about any new seasons.

Heard good things about that show

It's the best show since FLCL.

OK, lets calm down and not start an Otaku war.

I missed this one. really that good though?

Is it like A Place Further than the Universe or Bakuman?

To answer your question yes. Great show as well as being very unique, nothing quite like it, even to this day. Also growing up as a teenager there was a lot to empathize with in terms of the show.

@ginto LOL, im surprised you even went to my profile XD. That being said, Id prioritise watching the classics over the seasonal stuff

also this video is a time capsule holy crap

You missed FLCL? Or you missed Shirobako? Or both?

I'd say FLCL is like neither, and from what I've seen of Bakuman it is only superficially similar to Shirobako (both are "drama of people working in the anime/manga industry", but aside from that they're very different).

FLCL is a metaphoric acid trip about adolescent cynicism. Shirobako is workplace comedy-drama that somehow perfectly balances being outrageously silly and whimsical with the crushing hardships of joining the workforce (or failing to) in early adulthood.

What makes both of these two shows masterpieces is layers.

On the surface level Shirobako is just a workplace drama that happens to be set in an anime production studio... but then on top of that it's an educational series that teaches a lot about how an anime series is actually made, what a production assistant or episode director actually do... and then on top of that, too, it is filled with references or outright depictions of real-life anime creators, often-times with those creators themselves having been brought in for an episode so they can animate or otherwise produce their own character parody... and on top of that it uses all of these as a vehicle for many different commentaries on the anime industry and the challenges its creators face today, especially with comparisons to how anime is produced today versus a few decades ago.

FLCL can be looked upon as just a crazy sci-fi adventure story, and this is not only layered over by the (not uncommon) theme of adolescent transition to adulthood, but that in turn gets layered over by numerous themes of cynicism, illogic, and characters not living up to the perspective they believe of themselves. It's a show full of contradictions, where a lot of it will simply come down to your own interpretation. Then you rewatch it four times and get an entirely different interpretation each time.

Also, both shows have fantastic writing and production quality.

Speaking of Shirobako, i just saw this today. Looks like there's going to be a sequel movie. As excited as I am there's going to be more I'd rather have another season of the show but I'll take what I can get.

Yes, Shirobako is one of the best anime ever made.

Oooo that's exciting! Same director and presumably most of the same rest of the staff/cast, too. Should be good!

Ok, so with the hype around shirabako being on full display here i decided id give ep1 a go.

So, at first im like wtf, why are they having a race scene where both drivers gun the gas too much and let the clutch out to late, loosing precious seconds of acceleration. Then i see our main character start to drift and im like SOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

And she has her eyes closed half the time while she sings along to the radio. Anime production assistant street racing is serious business!

I really like the wiggle the car does while its airborne in the opening.

Just did the Evangelion episode with Asuka's mind-rape. I'm reminded of why Evangelion is such a huge influence on some of my writing at times - that entire sequence is absolutely exquisite. I love how psychological horror it gets towards the end.

What really sold it for me was the realisation that they're doing all that...with their speed pegged firmly at 50kph! XD

Well just because you're street racing doesn't mean you can't obey the speed limit, safety first right.

Ok two things here

a)Street Racing is already illegal, speed limit or not so that's not a thing, but yeah im assuming this is a censorship thing (cause IRL you can't fix the speed there without either autopilot or a std car in high gear.
:D Going excessively fast while in an urban environment and you want to drift is likely going to result in you having too much lateral motion when you initiate your drift, causing you to miss tight turns that are omnipresent in urban environments and windup where you don't want to be. Theres more to drifting than just kicking the clutch or pulling the e-brake.

also I just froze frame on the op:
a) There's no RPM gauge
;) SHES DRIVING AN AUTOMATIC!!! WHY?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Anyways, im solidly hooked on this show, idkwhy after 3 episodes. What i think sold it was the 5 minute daily standup meetings, reminds me of my old workplace

It's not a censorship thing. It's just whimsy. And also they needed to give the CG department some scenes to showcase.

All this Shirobako talk, I ended up re-watching the entire first half. Caught a bunch of references I'd missed the first time or forgotten, like the mecha animator the AD briefly meets with being Itano from Macross. Just got to the whole Anno/Sugie sequence and it's such a good succession of scenes, making me feel all warm and fuzzy inside :D

Picked up Comic Girls. First two episodes were fun and as someone who writes creatively it resonated somewhat.

Interestingly: The main character and the ecchi mangaka look eerily like Natsuki and Yuri from DDLC respectively.

Ha it's easy just to get back into it and watch a bunch, I've seen it a couple times now and am starting it again.
It's a fun show but I can feel their stress sometimes.

Yup, I've thrown it on "for an episode or two" once or twice and ended up rewatching the whole season again. It's super easy to get into and it definitely has the ol' Rewatch Bonus thing going on with all the details packed into it.

...probably gonna end up putting it on again this weekend now. XD
