In regards to DBZ, Its very fondly remebered by everyone in the anime community, but not critically well received. If you started blasting rock the dragon at a con people who go crazy and all start air guitaring.

I remember that song, but I somehow managed to watch (and rewatch) all of DB, Z, Kai, the movies, and even GT (which I had never been able to finish before) without hearing Rock the Dragon once. Even Funimation uses the Japanese music for their dubs now.

It's not all that well known outside of Japan, but it's basically a giant magic-girl mega-franchise that's been going for 12 years now. Has had a dozen different anime series, a ton of movies, manga, video games and of course a crap-ton of toys. I think there's even some live theatre shows of it, too?

It's mostly aimed at kids (especially girls), i.e. it airs in the mornings on weekends rather than the 2am timeslots most of what we watch airs in. Basically, you can sort of think of it as a sort of modern Disneyfied Sailor Moon.

From what I've heard, the quality of the series has mostly between average and good, but the last few years they've really gone all out on getting talented animators on board, and the people producing it really love the series, so you end up with some scenes (especially the battles) that are surprisingly good for a kids magic princess show, like this:

Could be. I know the hardcore fans complained about the Funimation music for years, though, and they were happy when Funimation ditched it. Of course, the people who grew up watching the Funimation dub were mostly attached to the Faulconer music, so that was a mixed bag. I miss it in certain scenes (like Gohan vs Cell, which IMO was much better with the Faulconer music), but I had already taken a liking to the Japanese music when I started watching Japanese bootlegs before Toonami finished airing the series.

Canadian TV had the Ocean dub, right? I had the whole series on VHS at one point (Hurricane Katrina killed it), and this was before the Funimation re-dub of the Saiyan saga, so I had the Ocean dub for that. I think the voices changed somewhere during the Namek saga.

So durarara ended

i think this is a show i shoulda binged rather than watch weekly, felt it killed the crazyness that in a condensed period of time woulda overwhelmed me. Not to say I didn't enjoy it. Also i re watched episode 1 of durarara with my bro. He wasnt into it, but it made for quite the contrast in terms of how mikado and masaomi interacted.

That being said there's quite a few things i just couldn't wrap my head around.

Who is that red headed martial arts girl? She kinda shows up outta nowhere. She teaches martial arts at the school ryo and the other 2 go to but that's about all i can recall

Izaya's motivations: they make no coherent sense, he loves humanity so he loves fucking around with them and causing harm? I think this may have been lost in translation at some point.

Gundam IBO ended but its been rewed for a season 2 hooray!

Rather pleased with grimgar's run. It wouldnt be to difficult to have a second season but it has to a degree run its course. The mc has grown into the role of leader and not really sure where else you could take his character. The other characters could be developed as they're kinda one/two dimensional.

Anyways i stoped watching shwarzmarken 4 mins into the last episode. Sigh, another bad muv luv adaptation. At some point the story of muv luv alternative needs to be told, though given that the visual novel took 40-50 hours to tell, you'd need at least 30 episodes to do anything good with the material. IDK if that project would get greenlit. Then again muv luv total eclipse got greenlit...

Anyways onwards to the new season of anime! Gona be plenty in store for the spring season.

Red-headed martial arts girl is an accomplice of Izaya's. She was introduced about 20 episodes back and shortly thereafter joined Izaya's team of random people. As for Izaya's motivations, yeah they only kind of work in the vague sense. The idea is that he likes seeing all the ways people act and react in different situations so he pressures them in different ways and observes the reactions. Does seem like he leans a lot more towards causing negative influences on them than positive, though. I think a lot of it might just be a flimsy reasoning to have him hate Shizuo though.

Izaya's final actions are weird, too. He jumps from

But the novels were like that, too. Other than the ending of the whole colourgangs/high-schoolers plotlines, the rest doesn't seem very well thought-out and the "big bad" comes outta nowhere.

Since I already knew what was going to happen, it was fun to just sit back and enjoy the ride, and the ending was pretty good for the parts that did get a conclusion. But I could definitely understand some people being disappointed (or confused by a lot of it since so many characters/sideplots only appear once every few episodes at best).

Seems i'm going into another anime phase (it happens once every few years)

Started watching "Legend of Galactic Heroes" yesterday. Watched 3 episodes, seems ok. Certainly different from the kind of stuff I usually watch.

Just a little update on DBS: ratings have ticked back up a bit in the last few weeks, and there was more anticipation for yesterday's episode than I've seen in a while. Consensus is that it paid off big time, and ep 36 was probably the best so far in terms of action, creativity, sentimental throwbacks, and animation. The plot hasn't even gotten serious yet, but they've already planted some seeds for it getting serious around the time this tournament wraps up. There's a lot of hype for next week's episode too. The hype is partly due to the fact that Vegeta is in the spotlight at the moment.

I rewatched the series with the Dragon Team translations and IMO the art and animation didn't really start to get bad (with a few early exceptions, some of which were fixed for the BD release) until the ROF saga, and they were only truly terrible during the fight against Frieza. Apparently the ROF saga was just deprioritized in the animation department so that they could get in gear for the new material.

There's a sizeable group of people who believe LoGH is the best anime ever made, even though it's rather old. It's been on my mental "I'll have to watch this someday just to see if everyone is right" lists for a while. Make sure you tell us how it goes!

Just the other day I was reading that Toriyama had publicly complained about the poor quality in the first months of DBS. And according to one of the animators on its twitter feed a big part of it was a production bottleneck, where they simply couldn't get the frames moved from step to step fast enough because the production schedule was really messed up.

But you're not the only one I've seen writing about things being better recently, so I guess Toriyama's grievances were the kick in the butt Toei needed to get their self together.

@ D'rek: LOGH is a very "mellow" anime. I've been watchin 2-3 episodes per evening (12 out of the 110 in so far). It's a very slow burn type thing, another refrain on "war. War never changes."

You've got a century-old war between two entities- the proto-Germanic Empire (led by an absentminded emperor. A minor noble is the rising military genius, but he secretly plots to take over and depose the aristos- all to free his older sister who's been picked as the Emperor' favourite concubine) vs a supposedly democratic republic that's pretty much a one party-state b/c of the war (led by a tactical genius who's a declared pacifist, but has to keep leading, because he can't let some other idiot get all his soldiers killed).

Very melancholy, but not bad so far. I can see the possible starts of several potential subplots.

The action is pretty low-key so far, and there's not a whole lot of focus on combat- I suspect this may change if the plot goes in the "both sides start developing planet-destroying WMDS and the wars get far less civilized", but right now, it's like 19th century warfare, but in space.

20 episodes into LoGH. Both sides spiraled into civil wars, and there's hints of a mysterious 3rd side.

Given I'm also re-reading FoD right now, some cool parallels going on.

So got around to checking out some of the new stuff this season

Mayoiga being 2 episodes in is the most interesting show by far this season. So far it looks like to be a character driven story with a varied cast. Im slightly reminded of an Agatha Christie novel.

Kiznaiver, too early to tell where its going. Not a fan of ham handed philosophy bullshit but ill overlook it if i can do something with its premise.

Attack on trains. Maybe yes maybe no. Depends on boredom really.

3 episodes into Grimgar. It is 80% talking about boobs/boys peeping in the shower/etc... this is definitely not my cup of tea. Why did you want me to watch this again?

40/110 into LoGH.
I like it, but i'm unable to watch it for long stretches. May be the fact that I put this on before bed, but I can't stay awake for more than 3 episodes in a row.

Will hopefully have some more free time this weekend to test if it's the general tiredness on my part, or the show.

As it stands, like I said, I like it, but it's far from greatest thing in the world. Emphasis is on politics and personalities, rather than the big-scale battles-which are there, but VERY broadly sketched out.

I'm not super-impressed how we mostly went from "2 equally wrong sides" to "one side is led by well-intention extemist v. A corrupt oligarchy on the other, with the "good" stuck in the middle (kind of)". Having hints of puppet masters I what's keeping my interest, since I wanna see how things explode when they are revealed to everyone.
