is boob size something teenage girls angst about much like how some guys would angst over penis size?

anyways up to episode 11 of hibiki. It's grown on me. I also kinda like how i started at ep 5, things are already in motion. Might give other music anime a go, i got your lie in april (or may i get em confused) and kids on the slope.

Haha, how would I know?!

For those that do get really angsty about it, yeah I guess it's probably about the same? But for the average situation keep in mind that (a) high school/teenage girls tend to be... let's say a bit more concerned about their image than the average teenage boy (insert rant here about western media building social structure expectations blahblahblahblahblah), (:p teenage girls can be veeeeery cliquey/social-position focused and with that comes judging, and © boob size is a lot more obvious than penis size!!!

Wow, I sooooo don't miss high school right now :p and we are sooooo off-topic so let's get back to talking about some anime alright!!!

Episode 11? Only two more to go! (How the heck did you even stop at that point?!) I'm really curious to hear your thoughts after the finale - IMO the pay-off was really good, the whole last episode just has amazing atmosphere and build-up. And honestly, I'm not sure I really "got" Kumiko's personality shift until she kinda summarized her new feelings near the end and locked it into place. But having it finalized at the end really made me appreciate how much Kumiko had changed since the start of the show and appreciate that it's not a personality I think I've seen before in any other high school drama show's main character.

Other music anime:

Nodame Cantabile, NaNa, and White Album are all music-related dramas like Hibike!E, Your Lie in April and Kids on the Slope.

K-On is a moe slice-of-life about a high school light-rock music club, but I think the amount of actual music and playing is very low.

Detroit Metal City Actors is a rock-music themed wacky comedy. I haven't seen it, not sure how much actual music there is in it.

For Idol-style music shows, the big two are Idolmaster and Love-Live.

just throwing it out there, I am never touchin K-ON. That show is firmly ingrained in my mind as part of that MOE phase that was really popular a few years ago. I heard they barely even play music.

Detroit Metal city i have seen and i really enjoyed it. There was also a live action movie done with Gene Simmons.

Nana i wacthed a few episodes before getting sidetracked... A friend of mine was really big on that show and was dissapointed i didnt watch more of it (said "friend" is emotionally unstable though so not like that means mutch)

I can't remember character names for the life of me d'rek ill have to look up the cast list and get back to you after watching the finale.

also, girl with the hair thing that looks like ears. She has the biggest lesbian crush i have ever seen holy shit.

edit:kumiko is the lead, sorry im used to her beign reffered to by her other name...

Just finished episode 11, liked how in the audition they went through the effort of doing two recordings and actually differentiating them. Kaoris was much more muted and that really comes across

Yeah, I don't think I'm ever going to watch K-On either... *maybe* just a couple episodes to get a better vision of what it is, but I think I'd go crazy trying to sit through two whole seasons of nothing but high school girls drinking tea and stealing each others' strawberries.

IIRC Silencer has watched it, though. Maybe he'll burst in here and have some profound opinion-changing statements about it.

I do want to check out Detroit Metal City, it looks fun, so I'll try and keep that in mind for a new show to watch sometime soon.

Yeah, Kumiko's the lead. I guess a lot of the characters call her Oumae-san.

These are the main 4:

Kumiko Oumae (Euphonium)
Sapphire/Midori Kawashima (String Bass)
Reina Kousaka (Trumpet)
Hazuki Katou (Tuba)

Yeah, I really appreciated that they didn't just make one solo play a bunch of wrong notes when both these players are supposed to be quite good. Both fo them get all their notes and rhythms more or less perfectly, Reina just has a clearer tone and stronger projection, something that even if the viewer doesn't have any band experience can still very clearly hear the subtle difference when the two solos are played side-by-side.

Yuuko (or, as reddit calls her, Ribbon-chan). Yeah, she, uh, really really REALLY looks up to her senpai, huh?

As someone who was in high school band, doesn't surprise me at all. The trumpet and flute sections are always full of drama and politics.

Just go ahead and watch episode 7 of DMC and get back to me how awesome that episode is.

Slightly related but notice how it's always omae san rather than kumiko? A guy a bumped into on set spent time in japan and he told me the reason why host or hostess bars are so popular. (he even told me how he and his buddies went to a maid cafe and found the clientele was predominantly women). Turns out the reason theres a demand for that is that not only are you talking to someone, but you talking to them at either a familiar or subservient level. I guess you pick up on it slightly watching tons of anime but they've a very hierarchical structure in terms of how you relate to others. So makes sense people willing to spend money to get out of that.

also trumpet and flute section having drama makes sense. Now tell me is the bass section more chill as well?

Maybe I'm mis-remembering, but I thought Kumiko was on a first-name basis with Hazuki, Midor and Reina though?

Anyhoo, yeah absolutely the japanese are very hierarchical and extremely formal. You have to do a lot of interactions "by the rules" (like when the teacher shows up at the start of class in any anime, all the students stand, bow, etc - that is really a thing). Not only is there a big level of respect towards your seniors/bosses but also towards your colleagues/equals too, and by default you use last names with honorifics when addressing someone who is your boss/senior/equal, not their given name.

So Kumiko's mom and close friends will call her Kumiko, but everyone else will call her Oumae-san/Oumae-kun/Oumae-senpai/etc. And that's just the naming conventions! I've got a friend who works at a company that has a division somewhere in China and apparently there are a TON more levels/ranks of job seniority/roles that fit in-between the ones that are used in both NA and China, because the folks in China need to have more positions so they can have a more clearly defined hierarchy of roles to know who's senior and who's not.

So yeah, it's no wonder host/hostess bars are so popular. I can't imagine how awkward dating can get in Japan with all the rigid social conventions one needs to navigate. Being able to spend a night at a bar with a stranger that you can pretend is your boyfriend/girlfriend, skip all the difficult setup and after-implications of any mistakes on your part, and just chat casually/somewhat-intimately with for a night must be a huge stress-reliever.

Basses are always chill. Unless two of them have to compete for the one position in jazz band :p

that last comment? were you a bassist?:p

But dear god, i can't imagine what dating rules are like. I personally like the fact these days dating is more ambiguous, less stress imo, just go with it.

But if all those vice documentaries are to be trusted (which i think they are to a degree) japan has huge issues with the fact people aren't having sex because of all this cultural BS they have to put up with. Women wnat to have careers and it seems japan hasn't figured the whole work life balance thing as women who want a career need to be 100% dedicate to it.

Anyways just finished watching hibike. Immediate after thoughts

Awwww, omae and reina held hands. Was cute.

Liked how we got to see the whole production and actually hear a band play.

Also like how the ending theme is basically the opening theme but done with a band. Significant improvement as that singer can't sing (i hate how in all these anime ops they have the vocalist screaming as opposed to signing and everyone thinks it sounds great when it's actually shit. A good vocalist knows how to project without screaming and doesn't need screaming to do a simple crescendo, it's also not a hard song...).

side rant aside.

Enjoyed the series, MC's dvp felt natural. She did become more serious but i totally get the developement. She still has her goofy side but shes matured. Which seems natural and par the course for a show about kids(teenagers are still kids as far as im concerned). You grow through your struggles and often times its slight things that can spur personal dvp.

Also not sure what you meant earlier about use of tropes. I don't watch this kind of show ever or often, more an action guy myself, so that could simply be my ignorance of that genre.

Welcome back Whisperzzzzz, haven't seen you around here in a while.

OPM second season is an interesting question. Right now, there hasn't been any official announcement about it one way or another.

--The original creator said he loved the adaptation and would want to see more of it.
--It is super popular and will probably sell really, really well.
--They included lots of things in the first season that seemed like leads into the second - some characters that were referenced/introduced but never showed up, like Blizzard, and some new plot bits added in the last episode

So all of that would lead one to think it would definitely get a second season.

But, the staff that made OPM were a really select group brought together by the director and producers. From what I can tell, Madhouse is still the studio that produced this but the key animators, effects artists, episode directors, etc, were almost entirely freelancers or people who work for other studios that were bought in just for this project. If they don't already have plans for a second season, getting that group back together might be very difficult, or at the very least might mean waiting until they're finished all the commitments they have currently already scheduled.

Additionally, it sounds like a lot of the funding for this project came specifically from the Madhouse producers, not so much the manga publisher. So they may need to wait a while longer for the sales to recoup their investment before they are ready to invest in a second season.

I still think a second season is very likely, but at the least I suspect it'll be a bit of a wait before it comes.

What I meant is that most MCs that start a show unambitious and finish with a goal they want to achieve tend to be more drastically (and, IMO, usually unrealistically) written. They'll start out totally depressed, dour and isolated, then meet one over-dramatic person who whisks them off their feet and suddenly become super passionate in [insert high school club they'd never heard of].

Kumiko, IMO, is written a lot more naturally. As she starts high school, she's melancholic, uninspired and doesn't know what she wants to do (at school or in life), but that doesn't make her this massively depressed person. She still has friends (and still makes new friends), the idea of joining the band doesn't come out of nowhere because she was in it before in middle school, etc. We see some of where this personality comes from (such as her sister now disliking her), we see how it manifests (she makes cynical/mean comments to friends, she won't confide to anyone but her cactus, etc), but she also has other parts of her personality that are totally unrelated (she's such a spaz, and I would put a lot of her just general teenage insecurity in this bucket, too).

When Kumiko finally starts to figure herself out and realize the difference between just saying you want to achieve something versus really meaning it and working towards it with all your might, it's not because some new character came out of nowhere, swept her off her feet and showed her an opportunity she'd never heard of. It's an opportunity she always had, and it's characters she already knew... and through interacting with them she gradually changes her opinions and personalities about her existing opportunities.

The whole thing, IMO, just comes off so much more naturally and Kumiko feels so much more like a real person than so many other shows that try to do the same thing.

Here's an even better band version of the song, too:

IIRC, I remember hearing that KyoAni actually made a deal with a high school band and had them come in to the studio and play most of the band music from the show! (but all the OST was done the usual way)

As for screamy J-pop singers... well, I don't know much about it but I imagine that comes from the whole enormous "idol" music culture they have in Japan. A crapton of these artists get their "start" when they're in high school or just past it, haven't necessarily have a ton of actual singing training, and are scouted/recruited just as much for their looks/personality than their singing. It'd be like if 90% of our top-40 pop singers were late-teen American/Canadian/Strayan Idol winners. Alas, the Japanese seem to really like that... screamy singing and all (if they didn't, the sound editor/music producers could easily have toned the screamyness down).

---

Also, totally unrelated to the above, here's an awesome fight scene from Concrete Revolutio that's just as beautiful as everything in OPM. Damn this show is bananas.

you mean our top 40s aren't like that? Most of them can't sing either,

also that animation is gorgeous.

I think you did a good job surmising kumiko's dvp. Those tropes do sound familiar, clannad for one employs it heavily with the dvp of nagisa as shes quite bland and doesn't become interesting until later.

It is only dubbed up to about episode 7 so far, though! I'm going to start it sometime this week and (try to) pace myself to catch up to the dub right at episode 13.

Ohhhhhhhhhh, I thought when you'd brought up KotS earlier it was because you had already watched it! Yeah, you should definitely watch it then. There's a scene in episode 7 that is absolutely amazeballs, you'll love it!

Finally watched the OPM finale with saitama vs Boros. It was well and truly worth the wait.

Not sure what to watch next. Should one dive into noragami s2 or should one watch the OVA first?
also i saw some OPM specials available on Kissanime? Maybe worth a watch.

There's a full-length OPM OVA episode that is a flashback to while Saitama was training/starting to become a hero and covers a bit of origin-story stuff. It was pretty fun. There's also a bunch of small shorts to go in-between the various episodes - haven't seen any of those yet, I think they are still to-be-released.

There's two Noragami OVAs (both released with the season 1 DVDs, I think), and AFAIK they are both side-stories taking place after season 1 but with no particular bearing on season 2.

If you're thinking of starting Noragami S2 as your next thing to watch then do it and we can rant/rave about it here together! :p

Finally watched the OPM finale with saitama vs Boros. It was well and truly worth the wait.

Not sure what to watch next. Should one dive into noragami s2 or should one watch the OVA first?
also i saw some OPM specials available on Kissanime? Maybe worth a watch.

didnt actualy see the OVA so idk. I enjoyed s2 a lot however.
