Of Sword Art Online? It will probably take a few months before a dubbed version is released - I think that's about how long it took the first season?

dubbing process wont start until its done airing. Given how popular its beens i give it one or two seasons at the most b4 a dub comes out. Unless it's being simulcasted by funimation, at which point they're likely dubbing it as we speak.

Latest Zankyou no Terror was pretty good. Not as good as the first few episodes, but still pretty good. I'm still not sold on Five. Liked what they did with Shibazaki though. Hopefully that works out for the overall plot soon.
Also, the average level of English spoken in this show, while lower than the first few lines the other episode, is still rather high. That's always nice.

Tomorrow is Phantom Bullet (SAO) day, however, and that's going to be awesome. :)
Everyone ready for the BoB? :)

So far so good. I really have to wonder what the reactions to what is happening in-battle is from the thousands of spectators watching all the camera close-ups, though. The audience just saw not-a-girl-Kirito strip naked to go swim in the river, and then tackle and pin Sinon to talk, then the two of them simply sitting and watching the others fight instead of attacking each other or the other players in the deathmatch... that'd be a whole bunch of head-scratchers for the audience!

Oh for sure! Heck, the reaction of people watching their match in the prelims were basically going "WTF is happening...wait, what?! Why are you...OMGWTFZOMGAREYOUBOTHINSANE?!" because that would have been hands-down the weirdest BoB match to date. In the actual competition, it just gets worse. XD

Oooooooooooooooh yeah! That episode was about as good as I expected it to be. :)

I've got a friend watching this who is going to go absolutely nuts over

Also, can I just say...

Kirito, best girl!

XD That scene was priceless. Especially Sinon's reaction. I'm so glad they nailed it. :)

Welp.

You know how ufotable is doing another Fate series, and I'm really excited for that? But we weren't sure which route specifically it would be?

Well, obviously it's been announced that it's going to be Unlimited Blade Works. (This made me wilt a little inside, as it's not the best route and there's already a movie for it...)

Immediately after reading the above, I also read that...

UFOTABLE IS DOING HEAVEN'S FEEL ROUTE AS A MOVIE

What does that mean? What are these so-called routes and how do they relate to Fate/ ? Why is a "heaven's feel" route better than "unlimited blade works" route?

I believe the origins of the anime si from a choice based video game story. So there are multiple routes and story possibilities,

So they're still doing Fate/Stay Night, but there are multiple possible ways the plot could go, and they hadn't decided yet, but now they have decided? And someone erroneously reported they were doing the "unlimited blade works" plotline, but actually they are doing the "heaven's feel" plotline?

Ok what fate is , is a visual novel. A visual novel is an animated book with dialogue. Think of it as a rendered comic if you will. In these visual novesl you can choose certain dialogue options or make choices for the protogonist of the sotry. Think of it as one of those chooses your won adventure story things (like if you do x go to page 15 if y, page 20. etc). Now within the fate visual novel there are three "paths' you can take. The first is called Fate/stay night, the second is Unlimited bladeworks and third is heaven feels. As for which is better and why, idk... im not big into VNs. Only played one. Muv luv alternative, and it was awesome. Also certain routes only open up after completing a previous route.

@D'rek - ok, so mostly what BalrogLord said, but I'll lay it out in the context of my squee post:

There is a series called Fate/stay night which is set in the universe of a certain director at Type-MOON studios. Collectively works in that universe are part of the 'Nasuverse' (named for the creator, Kinoko Nasu) and they all share lot of the same basic principles of how things work (magic, for one), though some have subtle deviations as there are multiple "universes" in the collective Nasuverse.

This series was originally a visual novel which, as BalrogLord explains above, is a story told on PC which has various levels of interactivity for the player to make choices for the protagonist, affecting the outcome of the story. Basically, there is a lot of text, set to various background pictures. Sometimes it is voice-acted, other times not, depending on the budget of the studio making it. You read, click through, and (usually, but no always) come to a point where you have to make a decision - whether that is what to say, do, or what have you, varies from game to game and decision point to decision point. (It should be noted; a LOT of VNs (visual novels) are what are known as "eroge". In fact, it is probably fair to say that it is rare to find a non-eroge VN. However, a lot of these fall into the category of "plot with porn" more than "porn with plot" or just plain old porn - Fate/stay night is a pretty good example of this, and you can tell because most of the adaptations remove the sex scenes and stuff entirely and don't suffer for it. A lot of harem anime are based on these, just btw)

Now, within the game there are several 'routes' which make up cohesive stories of their own, essentially the outcomes of different actions taken by the protagonist. Often in a VN, there are even more options within those routes, which can lead to different outcomes (such as losing the game, or different endings). But 'route' tends to refer to a specific series of overarching events, and once you're on a certain 'route', you usually can't get off it and onto another - i.e. it's locked you out of other routes based on certain decisions, even though you can still make choices within that route for different outcomes.

With Fate/stay night, there are three major routes possible: Fate, Unlimited Blade Works, and Heaven's Feel. Now, each of these routes actually focuses on different characters and events, and are in most cases mutually exclusive - they are alternative tales. In some VNs, and certainly in some anime adaptations, they try to go for less rigid routes, but it often doesn't work or leads to early game loss (in the case of a eroge, it tends to be failure to not, er, "commit" to which girl you like, for example).

Now, the first route, Fate, has already been adapted by Stuido DEEN way back as "Fate/stay night". They also did a movie about Unlimited Blade Works called, you guessed it, Fate/stay night the Movie: Unlimited Blade Works.

Frankly, both adaptations are horrible. They are actually mediocre at best. Poor style, little to no redeeming moments of awesome (though UBW did have a couple of cool scenes, and the finale of Fate was pretty decent). I kid you not, though, I dropped Fate/stay night about six episodes in. The main character is utterly infuriatingly annoying, has no redeeming qualities, and should by rights be dead many times over by the time the series finishes. I had to *force* myself to watch the whole thing, just for the storyline, after watching Fate/Zero.
UBW was better...ish. In that it wasn't horrendously bad. However it did feel distinctly like it was suffering from too much time-pressure to make it fit the movie format. One of the best things about this route was that it didn't focus as much on the annoying-as-all-hell main character of the Fate route. (The best part of Heaven's Feel is that he has even less role...>.>)

Now, ufotable went and adapted the prequel light novel (i.e. not a visual novel - actual short novel with some pictures, no alternative routes) which is called Fate/Zero. They did a smashing job and it is basically one of the best anime out there. Not even joking. It's brilliant. No prior knowledge required to watch, either. Super-awesome.

So time went on, and then it was announced late last year that ufotable was adapting a Fate/stay night route. No mention of which. This lead to the tantalizing idea on the internet that 1) it would be Heaven's Feel, as this is the only route to date with no adaptation, and 2) even more delicious, that they would be doing an amalgamation of the routes into one "super canon" which allowed the main events of each to coexist. A pipe dream, perhaps, but you know the internet and rumours...anyway, internet went "boom" with anticipation.

It was then more recently announced that the route being adapted would be Unlimited Blade Works. Now, this makes sense, as there is only a UBW movie, and it was really rushed and poorly done, and so there was room for an anime series also. However, this is also disappointing as I, and most of the internet apparently, REALLY wanted to see Heaven's Feel - widely regarded as the "best" route in terms of drama and action and characters, and we do already have a UBW movie, bad as it is.

Then, which is what I just found out, there has been an announcement that ufotable will not ONLY be doing an Unlimited Blade Works series, but they will ALSO be doing....a Heaven's Feel MOVIE. Thus my enthusiasm.

The point of it all is this: the current Fate/stay night adaptations are crap. ufotable made the PHENOMENALLY AWESOME GO WATCH IT NOW prequel adaptation Fate/Zero. They are now also going to fix part of the mistake that was using Studio DEEN to do any of the other work, and make a much better Unlimited Blade Works.
They are also going to asplode my thinkymeatz and do the best movie ever made, aka a Heaven's Feel adaptation.

And I know what you're thinking. Why doesn't Silencer just go play the Visual Novel if he wants to see Heaven's Feel so badly? Well, VNs tend to be hard to come by in the West, for a start. Secondly, ufotable will make it BETTER. Also, I don't have time. XD (You have to complete the other two routes before you can play Heaven's Feel.)
Also, also, I have played several VNs and while they are often really interesting, it's rare to find one which doesn't have some drawbacks (bad voice acting, or bad character design, or horrible dialogue either by translation or design...usually an anime will be vastly superior, unless it's just a translation issue and you happen to read Japanese, which I do not....also, too much porn. XD).

SO yeah. Hope that explains things, D'rek!

This is what you NZers get up to when the rest of us are all asleep, huh? :)

So the three shows that I'm still following this season are:

Terror in Resonance/Zankyou no Terror
Sword Art Online S2
Space Dandy S2

and in-between the week-long waits, I have found enough time to watch two older shows that have often been recommended to me, including by many of you in this thread.

Death Note - have about 5 more episodes to go on this one. Not super emotionally invested in it, but it's very entertaining. Massive props to the writers for some of the twists and bluffs in this show, they really did make the main characters total geniuses.

The structure of this show is a bit weird, though - 37 episodes, and they clearly could have stopped with a strong finale around 26 like many animes do. I wonder why they kept going to 37? (Not that I know yet whether the ending will be any better or worse than if they had stopped around 26.)

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann - finished this one about a week ago. This show was awesome. I can definitely see how some people were disappointed after the first quarter, but I don't think it would have been possible to do a 26-episode show that kept the momentum and style of the first few episodes all season. But I think they made it work very well.

Yep, TTGL is amazing and I'm honestly surprised they didn't sell out to the cheese midway.

It takes courage and smarts to do the time skip and subsequent stories.

Thanks for the infodump! I do know what a VN is, I just didn't know Fate/SN was one and it didn't immediately click when you were talking about "routes" that it might be one. Makes a lot of sense, now!

How reliable is this info about UFOTable doing UBW and a HF movie? Could it be mis-represented tidbits of info that are really just based on rumours from UFOTable, and it later turns out they aren't doing a movie but are including UBW and parts of HF into one series?

~D'rek, can't decide if an anime adaptation of Hatoful Boyfriend would be the best thing ever or bring about ragnarok...

(yes, that is a VN where you date pigeons)

It's confirmed - there are preview trailers and everything!

(And Damn are they awesome. The third preview for UBW, which is the only one after the announcement, actually was so good, and got me so excited at how much better than the series it would be, it somehow made me want to watch the stupid movie again. O.o I am *that* excited for this!!

And the Heaven's Feel trailer just left me hanging so bad...I kept expecting something to happen to preview some of the action that I was practically falling out of my seat. It looks so good!!! I haven't felt like that watching a trailer since...well...since SAO first got announced as having a series. XD

Just loving how much better ufotable's art is. The whole style is just...better. XD)

And I did figure you would know what a VN is, but seeing as I seem to have a few complaints about using too many abbreviations/referring to things that people don't know about, I figured I'd go for the full description.

Also, I have an assignment due, and this was excellent procrastination. >.>

And honestly, I would die if they combined UBW and Heaven's Feel into one, and were just trolling the shit out of the internet by making us think otherwise. But I seriously doubt it given my previous post. XD

So, I just reminded myself why the Unlimited Blade Works movie is so terrible. I'd like to say that they failed miserably at giving it a plot for people who don't know the story. The thing is, I do know the story, and it STILL MAKES NO SENSE.

Granted a couple of my complaints with it are more to do with ass-pull endings (which kind of happen no matter what...one of the reasons Fate/Zero is so much better) that kind of fly in the face of everything we know. I get the inclination to do a "woo idealism!" ending, but aside from the fact that such is completely unreasonable in the first place, it's only made worse by the fact that the main character's particular brand of idealism is horribly grating.

Case in point:

More to the point, and this is also a massive flaw with the Fate route as well;

Spoiler

It's very rare that I advocate for changing the source material, but after Fate/Zero, with its fixed storyline, I can't really do anything else. I hope ufotable goes for adapting a Bad End of some kind. Preferably one where a certain Babylonian King curb stomps everyone. Or at least fights someone who could actually possibly beat him.

*sigh*

But those are personal gripes with the story, not just UBW. The adaptation is so horrible, you even get bits of dialogue which are specifically meant to be heard as the second half/closing part of a relationship...which have no meaning because there was no establishing line/first half. Or dramatic echoes...which are the first you've heard of it in this movie. Or callbacks...to things not yet explained in the adaptation.
I mean...who did this? Why? The movie is almost two hours long! It feels like it was adapted for people who already knew the story but...it just feels so disjointed and terrible that it's like playing half a game, or watching half a movie...except the "half" is actually just bits picked out from about a quarter of the way through to the end. :S
Ugh. One of the few things I have actually deleted off my HDD (along with Fate/Stay Night the series, funnily enough) for reasons not of space-saving...just because it was so bad that I figured I'd never watch it again. XD Oh well, now the ufotable version should look all the better. XD

Also, no Zankyou no Terror this week; delayed until the 4th of September. Reddit/the internet has naturally noticed that this means there will be an episode on "9/11". Conspiracy theories abound. XD But now what will I do without my weekly double-dose of awesome?
Ah, wait, this SAO episode should make up for it. XD

Just started watching Death Note. Never really been able to get into anime aside from Studio Ghibli movies, but I'm really enjoying this so far. L is awesome.
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.
